Gary, is it necessary to make it that complicated?

I am not sure that having some sort of minimum number of functioning nodes in a complex network of these monster tanks is needed to make it playable.

Might be a fiction thing, but that isnt what most of us are talking about.

Just my opinion, YMMV.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 - 02:38 am: Edit

I think they belong in SFM not SFB.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 - 03:06 pm: Edit

Clearly, that has to be true.

But, (you just HAD to know that was coming!) there is as much over lap into SFB as there is for the existing published PDU/PDB ground bases.

As it was posted above, in the introduction, these monster tanks (or whatever we eventually decide to call these things, if we do, that is....), are patterned after the various ground based defensive phaser modules. Granted, they can be armed with Phaser I, II, III or IV, type weapons, on a mobile system (tracks? Anti grav? Tractor beam?) that, as it was suggested above, grant them the same mobility that the published vehicles (Tanks, APC, trucks etc.) have.

That means they could fire on (and hit) drones, shuttles non ship units or ships just as PDB’s could.

What hasn’t been determined, is how effective these things are when fighting against maneuvering elements of ground forces (infantry, tanks,APC, trucks etc.)

(This is why I suggested no offensive attacks against defended planets, by these Monster Tanks, just too effective if they have the COMPOT of a PDB. Just thought it easier to deal only in defense of a planet.)

I guess the reciprocal is true as well.

If these monster tanks (using whatever phasers they have mounted in the modules) could shoot out of the planets atmosphere, ships could shoot at them just as they could target PDU units.

In one sense, they are superior to existing PDBs... these monster tanks could (given enough time) move from one planet hex side to an adjacent hex side.

Yes, that creates a blind side, but it also allows 100% of the monster tanks fire power to shoot at a single target.

All of this are things that we could discuss, if it warrants a topic.

Jeff Wile:

In RE: Monster Tanks.

Different universes. The bolo universe of Keith Laumer is very different from SFB. A hellebore is simply the name of a heavy weapon, it is not an SFB hellbore. Plus, there is no way to "hide" the tank other than on a planet's surface as you describe. Sensors and scanners in SFB can lock to a shuttle at 100+ hexes range. If you are using impulse engines they can lock on to you, or know you are hiding behind the planet. Further, in Keith Laumer's universe Bolos were carried by assault transports between planets, and in desperate fighting fired their hellebores from the transport ship at enemy star ships. They could move on surfaces, but not between planets.

You also are readily destroyed given their limited shielding (12 boxes).

Also, in regular SFB NO SHIP (other than a Monster) can move and carry a Phaser_IV.

Steve!
Welcome back buddie!

In my defense, I was asking for a discussion on an adaptation of the Bolo idea.

I did not and have not asked for exactly Keith Laumer style Bolo tanks..
In any event, I am very glad to have you back.

Missed you, big guy!

Read "Chronicles of Old Guy" which is an amusing bolo-esque story.

One where all the humans just kind of wandered off while the tanks were doing other stuff. So the tanks miss the people... And they keep on doing all kinds of things that wouldn't seem very "cyber tank like"

Is there a post somewhere which explains syntax for italics, bold, quotes, etc on the board?

I have some ideas for a couple new Borak ships (well, new variants for a couple Borak ships), but noticed in the "New Ship Proposals" section that there isn't a subject for new Borak ship proposals.

Under "Miscellaneous" proposals, you suggested that I come here first.

Jeremy did create an excellent race and ships, but there is one small thing that (IMO) may add to them for some players.

Perhaps also a page for Jessica's delightful Peladine as well? While I've not thought of any for them, perhaps other fans of them have.

Ooooooo I wanna see new Borak ideas!

By Jeff Anderson (Jga) on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 - 07:11 pm: Edit

Per the instructions in the "Miscellaneous" proposals, I have put forth my proposal for a couple new Borak ships and wish to request a Borak section for "New Ship Proposals."

Thank you.

Request for a new topic:

Federation Light Police Ship.

A first Generation X-ship design for very late War or post General War police ship.

The idea is, given the increased power of modern x warp nacelles generate, and a MC 1/4 =0.25, a viable small ship design might be possible, perhaps a modern successor to the Federation Flower class escort type that was discontinued during the middle years.

The mission is intended for internal Federation duty. Convoy escort, light Police duties that do not require all of the systems of a regular Federation Police Cutter (the POL), such as Revenue collection, navigation maintenance, search and rescue, prisoner transfer, light cargo capacity (same as POL, 2 cargo SSD boxe capacity.

Weaponry would need to be discussed, but certainly less than that of a Frigate, but more than a vanilla POL.

Just a suggestion to address the premise that small ships in star fleet battles can be fun to fly.

"light Police duties that do not require all of the systems of a regular Federation Police Cutter"

With respect
1) All those systems are necessary to do the job
2) The Feda don't need a lighter POL. they need a better one in the X era.
3) I think that a darn FFG would be the designated replacement...
4)) Alternately, you'd use a pair or three of PFs in the role of convoy escort. Yeah, I know the Feds don't have PFs.
5) There isn't enough "X-ium" to go around already.
6) Or maybe a Flower (or FFG) refitted to tote a pair of F101 or 4-6 F18. The problem is the POL doesn't have enough firepower.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Tuesday, September 03, 2024 - 08:55 am: Edit

Mike, what list of removed SSD boxes are you looking at? I made no such list.

And I suspect you are reading too much in the title.

With respect to a possible “Light POL” replacement in the first X ship generation, It need not be lighter than the middle years design refitted in the General War era with the plus refit.

It just needs to be lighter than a First X ship tech generation Destroyer. (I would have specified a Frigate, but the X frigate appears to me to be a border line failed design.)

I would be happy with a FFG pol police variant, but you and I have argued the point for years. The FFG as is does not have the ability to replace the POL. It lacks cargo boxes to start with. The deck plans projects for the frigate and POL demonstrate that ergonomically, the POL is very different in its design and layout. Further, frigate saucer is needed for the Police flagship. I would have to check, but if I recall correctly, most provinces do not have a regularly deployed Police Flagship.

I suppose what I want would be served by a FFG with a deck house refit. But to be specific, we do not have one of those yet.

X-ium. Not enough during the General War, certainly. Exactly, how do you know how much “X-ium” exists after year 202? (Just picking 202 at random to have a year. Could have gone with yr 198 or yr 205.)

Perhaps a X-ship variant of the venerable Flower Class is the solution. Considering that the Flower class production stopped around year 144 to 145 (about the time of the fed - Kzinti war years.)

I really do not care what the correct answer is, I feel it is a need to be filled.

If you want to be helpful, make the case to adopt a FFG refit that can complete the police mission.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Tuesday, September 03, 2024 - 12:29 pm: Edit

One police cutter per hex and one FLG per province.

In my world view, Star Fleet would retire the FFG in favor of DW in the late war years (Y180+) and give them to the Police to use as the main patrol ship.

I would suggest you ask Steve Petrick. I don't think any empire would put X-tech on a tiny police cutter.

By Mike Grafton (Mike_Grafton) on Wednesday, September 04, 2024 - 08:27 am: Edit

Jeff, with respect
- that was a quote.
-IMHO the only problem with the POL is firepower.
-An FFG refit proposal? You'd need a couple cargo, a HTS, GAS, and I don't know off the top pf my head. I'd start with a FFV (the SSD not the ship); convert 2 fighter to HTS, convert 1 fighter to GAS, convert 2 fighter to cargo...
