Where can I find some information on the average basic composition of a fleet? Is it as simple as one cruiser hull, two destroyer hulls and two frigates?

I ask because I'm painting up some Fed models I have and would like to know what combinations of what I have forms legal fleets.

Thanks!

Oh. Duh.

Thanks Gary.

I have a question about attacking a base station or battle station on the frontier.

Why wouldn't the attacking force blitz around the station, destroy any supply convoys going to it, and then bombard it with lots and lots of cheap long-range drones?

In the traditional attacks in scenarios I've seen for SFB or FC, at least one ship in the attacking force is always going to be lost. That seems like a tremendous waste of resources and personnel.

Don't know where else to put this, so as it kind of goes along with my last question above, it will go here.

Since the starships of the SFU carry many non-military personnel for exploration and research, would the number of their crew be reduced in wartime? That would seem to make sense unless those "extra" crewmembers also performed other military-essential duties in damage control or such.

Michael,

I think invading fleets could bypass border bases in the manner you suggest, IF it were a matter of the bases only. But it's not. Ultimately, those bases exist as logistics nodes to support mobile forces. You speak of destroying supply convoys going to the base. But that base can survive a lot longer without being resupplied than the invader's ships can. The problem for the invader isn't the base itself so much as the fighters stationed there, which can sortie to attack supply convoys supporting the invader's forward elements. Defending ships trapped behind the "line" could also draw support from the base and attack the invaders rear areas. And those bases could greatly increase the survivability of any defender CFs or DNLs making behind-the-lines raids on the invader's forces.

If the invader knew that their were no mobile elements (fighters, ships, PFs if it's late enough in the war) that could draw support from the base and conduct rear area attacks, then bypassing would be sensible. But even here, a Starbase can actually manufacture small ships and could not be bypassed in any case. Ultimately the invader only has two choices. Attack the base, painful as it is, or leave enough ships behind to effectively screen it. The latter may cost less in terms of attacking ships destroyed. But in the short term it could actually require more ships be pulled from the front, if the mobile elements supported by the base were particularly strong. And the loss of those ships from the "spearheads" might reduce the momentum of the attack too much and give the defender a chance to regroup.

Mike,

What "non military personnel?" I would bet that every "non combatant" person on the ship (like the ships barber, cooks and geologists) also has some skill that got them INTO the fleet as opposed to the also rans (The F&E Fed fleet is 100 ships? From HOW many BILLIONS of beings in the Federation?)

Haven't you ever seen how the ships cook is crucial to prevent the enemy from taking over the ship?

You mean like the Ships Cook from "Hunt for Red October?!?"

Where is Steven Segal when you reallyNeed Him?!?

He's working as a deputy sheriff somewhere in TV land.

More to the point is whatever happened to Erika Elinak.

She just vanished.

Recent pics are NOT flattering.

Now we know where Prime Teams workout when they're not capturing enemy shuttles/PFs/ships... they all work in the SHIP's GALLEY.

Just goes to show, cooking is a cutthroat buisness :)

With 12 smokin' PH-4s just bristling to reduce foolish ships into scrap metal, has anyone EVER been able to keep their minesweeper or mauler from getting killed before doing its job when attacking a Starbase?

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 - 12:51 pm: Edit

Yes, with massive EW (although I've NEVER used a mauler directly against a Starbase. You have to get way too close.)
