Hi!
I have noticed in R8 that the Federation Police get a three-engined version of the police ship to help deal with heavier Orion or other raiders - and that in the Federal Republic (where the same hull remained in production as the FRA's frigate) a similar modification could be developed to give the Federals an equivalent of Star Fleet's Battle Frigate.
Perhaps the SSD from R8 could be converted into an Auroran design?
(It seems that in the face of the Andromedans, the Souldra, and the many Omega races who have a pop at the FRA over the decades, the need would arise for a more powerful version of the Frigate to keep pace.)
Has this been done already - and if not, what do people think of the suggestion?

Fluff idea:
Federal Republic Battle Frigate (FFB)
As the demands placed on the Federal Republic's armed forces increased during the Y170s and Y180s, the relatively small Federal fleet was faced with the need to maximize the firepower available from its limited number of hulls.
While new ship classes such as the Destroyer and the Battlecruiser emerged from the Auroran shipyards, a new study was initiated in order to examine the potential of up-grading the existing figate design, which had served both the UFP and the FRA for decades.
In a parallel development of the design for the Police Frigate produced from the Tacoma-Rigel shipyard in the Federation, Auroran engineers experimented with placing a third 30 GW warp engine onto a slightly expanded frigate hull, though the weapons configuration was distinct from the design seen in the UFP.
The ship entered service in Y181, either as new construction or as upgrades to existing FFs. While the third nacelle did not give the FFB enough power to make full use of its additional weapons at high speeds, its added firepower served useful in defending pocket battlestations and other fixed defences across Auroran space.
In terms of weapons systems, what would be a good FRA equivalent of the upgrade to the PFF?

I have to admit that I dislike using a design developed in a distant part of the galaxy as the basis for a new design. Couldn't you use concepts from the friendlier Maesron faction as the basis?

Since the FRA was out of contact with Alpha Quadrant during the majority of the SFU chronology how did they get a design from Rigel?

I meant that they came up with the idea by themselves, but it was a parallel development of the Fed design.
Unless a ship coming through the Nexus had a PFF encounter stored in its data banks... or was an actual Police Frigate?

So, after chewing over the differences between the POL and PFF, and looking at the various FRA FF options, I was thinking of this as a start:
Take the FRA FF,
*Add a third 5-box engine,
*Add a prow standard photon torpedo (so 1 standard and 2 light torps overall),
*Have 2 Phaser-1s with FA-L, 2 with FA-R,
*Add 2 to each of the 6 shield facings,
*Maybe up the BPV by 20 (or 25),
*YIS of Y187.
Given that in the timeline in Omega 2, we see the introduction of 'hot warp' war cruisers and war destroyers by the FRA, at the tail end of the Second Great War (in Y187 - along with the Maesrons - and both used them to finish off the Vulpa and fight the Invasions) and while the Feds can afford to cook up a whole range of new ship classes, and use them to supersede their older destroyer and smaller cruiser classes, the FRA do not have that luxury.
It would make sense to at least try to develop modifications to the Frigate, Destroyer and Light Cruiser classes to newer 'war' classes, before embarking on entirely new hull types. And for a Republic with loads of FFs, and the means to get more firepower out of them with less effort than constrcting a whole new fleet, the FFB seems like a decent idea.
(Not just because I came up with the thought, of course!)
