Ken Kazinski:
Have you received my last few E-mails? I am beginning to suspect that somehow my E-mail is. not working when I send things to you and some others.
By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Sunday, December 03, 2023 - 09:11 am: Edit |
Steve,
I have not received anything from you since June.
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Wednesday, December 06, 2023 - 12:52 pm: Edit |
Must be something in the E-mail system. I will ask our resident expert (Al Beddow) and see if he can deal with it. Between SVC's computer problems and now we know mine this is not good. I can still reach this board. but I have not gotten anything from you since apparently June. Argghh. Sigh.
By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Thursday, December 07, 2023 - 03:06 pm: Edit |
I sent you and Al a couple of emails in October asking if you received the file I sent.
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Friday, December 08, 2023 - 02:43 pm: Edit |
And I replied that I had received The Orion file, and sent some feedback. The wonders of technology. Currently Al thinks that your computer may be sending E-mail from me directly to the trash because your Spam filter may not recognize our new Web host.
By Ken Kazinski (Kjkazinski) on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 - 06:39 pm: Edit |
Have both of you received my emails?

I have.

I have some new product suggestions relating to supporting tournament play. I hope this is a good place to post them?
1) Update module to TR to reflect the latest MRB. Make this available in e-book as well as POD printed form.
2) Split the new TR into two products.
- TR: Just the rules supporting the sanctioned tournament ships (plus possibly the Vudar and Jindarian ships, as they are MRB races)
- TRP: the rules to support the playtest ships.
3) Create 2+1 new counter sheets, for same empire (Fed v Fed, Klingon v Klingon etc.) matches. These would be copies of the existing pair from Module T and an ammo sheet. All that would be different would be that the counters would be printed light blue on white, as used for the alternative Hydran and Andromedan ammunition.
4) Custom color EAFs for each tournament ship, with engine/aux/battery indicated, arming costs shown etc. I have started work on these in spreadsheet form myself.
5) Megahex counters for tournaments, with each ship included twice but distinguishable, for same empire matches.
6) A tournament set - a set that includes everything the budding tournament player needs to play:
- Basic Set Rules
- Module T Rules
- Module T Color SSD sets x 2 in punched loose leaf form for lamination and/or copying (pre-laminated would be even better, but hey, I know that's probably impractical)
- Module TR book
- map
- EAF x 2
- Color DAC
- Sequence of Play
- D6 dice x 2
- counter sheets (T + ammo + alt.T + alt.ammo)
- dry wipe pen
- voucher for SFBOL trial
all in a hard-wearing three ring binder with color cover inserts and pockets for counters, pen and dice. The binder could be shrink wrapped for presentation and shipping and act as a box for the parts. The use case here is as a Birthday/Christmas/Self gift for a person (favorite niece/nephew, grandchild etc.) who has maybe seen SFB played and shown an interest, or played a couple of times and enjoyed it, or is a keen gamer but has never played SFB. It gives them everything they need to play tournament with a buddy or online via SFBOL. Another use case is as part of the library of an RPG or Wargame group.
You could also have an 'upgrade' version that excludes the rulebook and map from the Basic Set.

Allow me to comment on the ideas.
1. Updated Module TR: I am not sure the last time we did this but that should actually be easy. I'll mention it to Jean.
2. I am not sure that splitting it would accomplish much. The cost differential would be minor. But I'm not a tournament player and marketing Jean will decide that one, if she thinks the whole project is worth pursuing.
3. Countersheets: the simple answer is "no way in heck" because the minimum print run of 1000 is about 100 times the number we would sell. However, I am been trying to talk with some special vendors who might be able to produce very short runs of counters at a reasonable cost (or not). I'll know more when I have gotten answers. I have been talking to one of them for almost two years without an answer, but a new one popped up and I just sent the first email to him.
4. We could sell such things as PDFs but short run color printing costs over a dollar a page so that won't happen.
5. Megahex: see answer #3 above. Same answer would apply.
6. That is probably more elaborate of a product than we would ever produce, but some lower version of it might work. For example, whatever a binder costs you could buy at Office Depot for the same price we would pay, and we'd have to charge two or three times that price due to handling. The hand labor to assemble this thing would make it prohibitively expensive. I'm no expert but I think the total sales of such birthday presents would be less than a dozen a year.

Thanks for the reply Steve, it is good to see you on the mend and back at work. Next time, let someone else wear the red shirt!
Re (6) - yes, sadly you are probably right, the sales would probably be minimal. I just felt that tournament play might be a good way to expand the player base.
Re counters: I get what you mean. I found these guys (https://www.boardgamesmaker.com/about.aspx); they are based in China, which could rule them out and at the prices quoted to the public it would be impossible to make a profit. However, as a publisher you might be able to get a reasonable quote out of them? They are full color, 1/2" and 1", no setup fee and operate without a minimum order quantity - just a sliding scale of costs. They give discounts for life on larger orders. At the very least you could use the quote as a competitive quote when dealing with other, less flexible suppliers?

I will check into them Thursday.

I have some information, not enough to offer a specific product, but enough to show that the path is steep and narrow.
The art for Module T was done in an old format that is no longer available, but it would take me at worst one day or two to do new art all over again. Then I could do color swaps in a couple of hours, producing a T-Alt sheet with red Feds and blue Klingons for example. That would give you the civil war sheet you want, printed in a quantity (50) that we might actually sell in a year (more likely five years).
The problem is that given that we do sell about 20% of units to brick-and-mortar stores that agree to never sell at a discount (something I didn't know until now, I do know we don't sell to wholesalers or discount retailers any more) we'd have to charge a "base price" high enough that we wouldn't lose money on a sheet sold to a store. But then, we don't sell spare parts to stores. It would be arguable if T-ALT was a product or a part, since it isn't really a product but isn't part of a product.
That base price is going to be around $24 a sheet, three times the "normal" price of a sheet printed 1000 at a time. I suspect that would be so high that you wouldn't want to buy it.
That being the case, the only way we could do it would be to have at least 25 people pre-order and pre-pay for the T-Alt sheet. THAT gets tricky because if we charge your credit card we (contractually) have only 30 days to ship the product. I don't know what the printer's turnaround time is but I suspect it would be most of those 30 days, and you'd have to consider that it could easily take 10 days to amass 25 orders and even then only if we advertised the heck out of the fact that we'd have the T-ALT sheet available for pre-order only for a few days starting a month from the announcement. [We could do a very tiny kickstarter to manage the tricky credit card rules but they take a cut of the money which would make the price higher.]
Not impossible, but tricky.
Would you or anyone else pay $24 for T-ALT?
There is another option, but it's even more tricky. If I did a half-sheet (140 counters) or a quarter-sheet of 60 counters which had just the SHIPS in alt-colors (you would have to use the existing drone, shuttle, and other markers from an empire of that color on the old T-sheet) would there be 50 people who would pay $12 or 100 people who would pay $6? I doubt it, but I won't know unless I ask. If I could think of three other "sheets of 60" (say, motorcycles for Star Fleet Marines, 4-pod Auxes for F&E, North Polar ships for SFB/FC) we'd be back to the minimum of 50 printed and 25 sold but I'd also have to find customers for the other quarter-sheets.
Tricky and fascinating.
The Chinese ideogram for "crisis" is a combination of the ones for "danger" and "opportunity".

Just heard from the guys with "short source two" who had a fascinating idea I need to look into.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, November 21, 2024 - 09:18 pm: Edit |
Okay, the guys from "short source two" told me about a fascinating idea. Using this idea, we could print fairly tiny quantities of sheets in mini-batches, maybe one mini-batch every few months, each batch including counters for whatever old products just ran out of counters and whatever special counters we think anyone would buy or which we had pre-orders for.
The current mega-batch concept only works one way and that produces four sheets, 1000 copies of each sheet. Four thousand sheets at X bucks a sheet means spending a lot of the cash reserve. That's easy to do on new products; painful to do on reprints; impossible to do on special request oddball counters.
The new mini-batch concept would produce (for example) 10 of C1, 24 of C2, 36 of C3, 26 of C4, and 4 of ALT-T. A total of 100. This solves the problem of investing money in huge stocks of counters we don't need that many of, when the alternative is to be out of one SFB module and start rumors that the whole line is about to be dropped (which will never happen).
Assuming that the Female Force that actually runs ADB was willing to see me spend that much of my limited productive time doing new art for module T and for T-ALT, we could easily produce one copy of T-ALT for SGP (if he agreed to buy it) and another two or three sheets which we would offer for sale. If anybody bought them we would do more in the next mini-batch. If nobody bought them then we wasted 3 times X dollars which is less than I spend for lunch and I am notorious for cheap food (e.g., $10 to eat at Dairy Queen).
When I have hard numbers, I will get you updated information. In the meantime, if you always wanted (or once had an idea for) some kind of special countersheet that we told you was impossible to print because we would never sell 1000, then the world has just shifted on its fulcrum and you could remind me of that request/idea.

Financially speaking, this also takes you out of the business of "investing" in counters long term and brings you closer to Just In Time manufacturing.

A long time ago I proposed a set of Turn / Slip and ammunition counters for Fed Cdr. Would that be the sort of thing that would fit with this?
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, November 25, 2024 - 06:28 pm: Edit |
I thought FC already had those?
By Steve Stewart (Stevestewart) on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 - 08:30 am: Edit |
I think you put it on your "short jobs" list, but it never floated to the top! This proposal was to provide additional turn / slip counters and ammunition for some races who were a bit short. I'll put a reminder in the FC Forum if it would help?

We sent our first order to SOURCE TWO for enough Klingon Border and SFB Basic Set to get those products back in print for the sale. I expect to end another order in a week or two to restock Y1 and some other out of print SFB products. News when I have it.

Thanks for all this SVC. Sorry, I somehow missed these posts in the madness that has been my life as a career educator over the last six months until now. (if any of you are considering becoming a teacher of any kind at any level, please factor in the strong possibility the job *will* try to kill you at some point).
If you are still considering doing T-ALT, I would commit to buying at least THREE (possibly four) copies, price permitting, especially if it was based around the 280 counter "three teams" design I did, which had the fully ammo equipped blue, green and red teams on.
According to the company weblog, you've been working on something Tourney related recently. Tweaked my curiosity!...

P.S. I raised the suggestion of an update to TR earlier (TR 2025?), which you were quite positive about. Any further thoughts / progress on that please?
By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 - 08:47 pm: Edit |
P.P.S. Sorry SVC, three posts all together.
I am sure I've asked this already, but here goes - the current Module T sheet on the store shows the 216 sheet in the picture but description says 280. Have you already redesigned and printed the Module T sheets as 280 or is the description wrong please? Just put another order through Leisure Games for more of the new counter sheets, and I would hate to miss the new tourney sheets if you've done them.

I honestly don’t remember. I have slept since them. But i dont think we reprinted T as we have hundreds in stock. I think we had discussed adding a special update sheet to a future short run batch but we haven’t had one. There is very little interest in it.
