I'd also suggest, the older the dragon, the more likely he's able to control the strength of the plasma.
Experience will teach it that its not necessary to use a plasma R on a potential prey when its a small prey. IOW, kill to eat, not kill to vaporize.
So, perhaps an older dragon can pop out a plasma G strength torp instead of an R, much like ships can.

If some of the boxes were shaded other colors, the SSD could represent various dragon sizes. Or represent how a dragon ages.

FedCom has SSDs for the space dragons, as well as every other monster that's been released for that game so far.

Super Ancient space dragons can simply breath 2 Rs per turn :D
Or maybe allow it a 100-point warhead blast? Why limit the strength? Certainly allow an enveloper if not that.
