Adam, dude, you have to realize that people might not have remembered or read your post those weeks ago and I think it was more than a month.
Yes, it was ofr a new race but with out that understanding and viewing it as a post from out of the blue why don't you re-read your own post and see if you are terribly surprised.
Don't take it so hard. Out of context your post is really hard to understand.

Merlin: Everyone gets kicked around here now and then. Don't take it personally.
Loren's right, though, if you're missing some pretty crucial context, your post seems like it's in the wrong forum -- and for someone who never played AD&D (yes, there are such people out there) it probably seems like a language other than English.
As for the content, I can't imagine ADB even wants to go close to something that could look like infringing T$R, er, WOTC's copyright... Some fights just aren't worth starting.

Oh geez. I just stomped in it.
All I can say is it's been a rough week. Also, you don't have to worry, I've stopped all development of this--at least until a new home-brewed spellcasting system comes too me.
Man do I feel Stupid.

Adam, Sorry, I didnt mean to be harsh, thought I was helping by explaining.
the other comment was intended to be humorous, please do not take it for an insult.

sorry, long day, lots of stupid people around, it sorta degraded my sense of humor some.
No hard feelings .

Ooh - here's a notion that came to me yesterday (18 hr shift, desperate to stay awake). A Kzinti CS arrives in the O-sector where it assists in repulsing an attack by the Zosman Marauders - the Marauders capture some of the drone technology and trade it at a hefty price to the Hivers...
Too bad I'll never see it in the 'real' world, but this would be interesting.

As an SSJ thing, could the Supplement #2 X-Ships be brought back, along the lines done with the Fed CVA? Kind of a alternate history of X Ships. Basically keep the ships but throw away the rulebook. All the systems would work like the current (1st X generation) systems, and the option boxes would be treated as NWO boxes under the HDW rules. Might need a special rule exemption for the Command Crusiers' special sensors.
It has been a long time since I played these ships, but as I recall the two biggest problems were the overloaded phaser rules and the high amount of battery/reserve power. The current X rules which eliminated the overloaded phasers, and batteries holding 3 instead of 5 units, would seem to reduce these problems. Maybe there is more, but these ships wouldn't need to as balance as "real" ships anyways.
Unfortunately I seem to missing my Supplement #2 SSD book; I saw it about year ago. As such I can't really play around with idea much further.
Just seems like a fun idea, but would probably account for a significant number of SSDs (the original had something like 32).

Starsabre,
Supplement #2 never happened; it was a dream sequence.
In all seriousness, the ships that were publish in that product were absolutely dreadful and horribly broken, even without the accompanying rules.

(Sounds of much commotion and activity in the back ground)
"And this time, remember to bring TWO barrels of tar for every 100 pounds of feathers, the last time somebody brought this up we ran out of tar half way..."
Sounds of chains rattling as very old SFB players rear up with attention.
"Did sombody say Supplement 2?!??!?

Horribly broken ships in SSJ? Never! -- SSJ1 and SSJ2 are packed with these. I don't see that as a barrier.
Even as broken as they were, my play group on that era had some great fun with them. Everyone took the whole thing less seriously.
I have no desire to see these in the "main" game again. But in the bizarre world of SSJ, I see them as good as most things printed in SSJ1 and SSJ2.
BTW, they are probably far less broken than much of what been going on in X2 development pages.

There is no way SVC is going to republish Supp.2 in any way. That's my bet in any case. It wasn't written by him and was a huge failer but also a good lesson in how not to do things.
X2 will come someday, best to just wait for that. We have X1 and XP gives us almost endless variations to mess with.

Actually, the ships themselves weren't that awful. It was the rules, particularly the 2 for 1 shield reinforcement and the uber-heavy weapon tables (including overload ranges of 12) that really did it. I agree though, it's dead and gone and never coming back. Rightfully so, too.

In particular, I remember thinking that the Klingon F7 was a cool little design.
Unfortunately, that's the only positive thing I recall about that module...
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 07:25 pm: Edit |
Well, it's one thing to derive inspiration from something and another to republish it.

Oh, all the small ships were unplayable, too little power for the increased weapon load and other increased power costs.

I'd guess that there is a pent up demand for more X technology and X-ships... the number of posts in the X files/threads proves that much, atleast.
The question comes down to how much market potential exists for it...or would players prefer Y2 or R-11, 12 or 13 more... or even other products (star fleet command, F&E. or another GURPS PD product.
For my vote (for what its worth) I'd hate to see ADB spend ANY time working on a reprinting of Supplement #2.

I think there is also a desire to flesh out the restof the history. To many it's like reading a really great book only to find the last couple chapters haven't been written yet.
But the SFU is an evolving thing and it need it's time to grow. It's probably best if X2 waits a bit longer. Prime Directive will let what established really get rich and after that the next era will be all the better.
It's a little hard to know where to take the SFU until it is fully understood where the new era is coming from and that part isn't really finished yet. Sure we know the general outline but one thing that working on PD has shown me is that there is still a huge amount of important details that are still undefined.
I think if it's really going to be done right then the time is not now or very soon.

Loren, you bring up a good point...
but there is the dynamics of the market driving some (most?!?) of the preasure on ADB.
Sub light game rules for SFB might be a viable option for developement...and one could build a case that it would be necessary for the "history" of the SFU... but if 90% of the customer base refuses to buy it... then it would be a bad business decision to produce it.
(please understand, I am not predicting that sublight battles wouldnt sell... just using it to illustrate the point.)
I think a reprinted versioon of supplement#2 might well fall into the same kind of catagory that I think sublight battles might fall into.
That said, I heartily concur with your last sentence that "if it's really going to be done right then the time is not now or very soon."
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 11:49 am: Edit |
Another problems is that if Supp.2 was published no amount of "This was an old failed product. It is not balanced so don't flood ADB with questions about it." will work. Sure, some of us would get it but the vast majority would think it's official because it's been reissued. Supp.2 would create no end of hassle for SVC.
Remember, us on the board aren't the whole customer base.
Just look at the misunderstanding that occured with the MRB. We on the board that were around got the idea clearly but on the market it's been pretty misunderstood.
I really think ADB can only produce final finished products or perhaps playtest material. Supp2 wouldn't be playtest material because, IIRC, SVC isn't interested in going that route.
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 11:50 am: Edit |
We'd better knock off the Supp2 topic here in the SSJ3 thread.

Now that we have had an SSD for the classic Fed CV(O), how about the original Fed Frignaugt?

What I really want to see most in the next SSJ product (a Captain's Log or otherwise) is General War Carnivons. I think the mechanics of upgrading their technology could be pretty straight forward - I put together a tourney ship years ago to experiment: http://jgray-sfb.com/SSDs/Carnivon/carntc.gif
Something like what was done for the Peladine and the Paravians to make them a viable campaign race agianst the rest of SFB. I'd be more than willing to work on such a project if help is need to make it a reality.
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Monday, November 19, 2007 - 01:57 pm: Edit |
And the original D7W! (Actually, I wish that had been a one-off unit and the other D7W the regular production one.)
