An SSJ only Federation SCV (Super Carrier) idea

Well, this ship belongs squarely in the SSJ category. It exists to make some players smile, some roll their eyes, and to make the Steves shake their heads and mutter about their fanbase.

The design is based on the idea that either the CVA(O) was built or the designers were still pushing the concept by the early Y180s. In the end, it is just an excuse to slap 5 full squadrons of fighters on a single hull. It is inspired by hulls such as the CVDs, the Hydran monstrosity, and modern wet navy hulls.

As that I have no SSD building skills, I have none to show you, but our building experts are free to e-mail me their idea to see if they match what I have in mind here.

The design is a three engine hull with the back two being the CVA(O) engines and the forward one being either that or a NCL engine mounted below the saucer. The ship cannot saucer separate due to the way it is designed. It would be a 1.50 MC dreadnought scale ship, but not convertible from any other hull.

The forward hull would have a 12 space shuttlebay in the rear center with either 4 or 6 launch tubes. Due to an oddity in the design of the doors (they are effectively mounted in the roof of the bay), they are considered ‘extra large’ doors for the purposes of landing, but not launching. This bay would deploy 12 F-18s normally, and due to design limitations, cannot accept ‘larger’ fighters such as F14s/F15s. In addition, there are 6 external bays for F111s on the saucer. The saucer only has 2 single box impulse engines (one on either side of the bay). On each side of the saucer are 2 ph-1s and 1 ph-G (RS/LS) and an ADD12. No forward weapons are mounted due to the way the fighter bay takes up the center of the hull with the launch tubes pointing forward.

The rear hull is similar to the CVA(O) with 2 12 space bays for fighters, 1 8 space bay for shuttles, and 6 A20 mounts. 8 balcony positions are on each side. The doors for the fighter bays are standard ‘extra large’ doors. Other than that, the rear hull has at least 10 cargo boxes, 2 ph-1 360 and 2 ph-G 360 and 4 G-racks. Other ship systems and power are spread forward and aft as appropriate.

Yes, the ship is low on weapons, but it is still armed better than an upsized CVD or such. I included the ADD12s in order to up the defensive armament just a tad more. The ship normally carries 24 F-18, 12 F-14, 6 F-111s and 6 A-20s. She could possibly replace one of the rear hull squadrons with 6 F-101s, but only one, and the forward bay can’t handle them. Her escorts would be 1 NAE (escort NCA), 2 NAC and 2 DWA.

Needless to say, a player would require his opponent’s permission to use this ship as it violates half a dozen points in (S8.0).

And if somebody could come up with a ballpark F&E stat, I would appreciate it.

This concept was published by SVC in Starletter #9, years ago as the CVN. It actually had 6 squadrons (36 F-18, 24 F-14, and 12 A-10). See topic Federation CVN Carrier - Revisited.

Donovan Willett:

I will see what magic I can work using SSD 8.0.

Give me time, this will be a doooooooozy :) :).

I just wish this game had a full blown SFB equivalent of a LATE MODEL NIMITZ CLASS SUPERCARRIER. Oh well we can only dream can't we :) :)

The Fed CVN was in Star Fleet Times #9.

way back in 1995.

I moved my discussions to the CVN topic...

Just found this topic.

The original idea seems interesting, namely "... either that the CVA(O) was built or the designers were still pushing the concept by the early Y180's."

It occurs to me, that there might be several alternatives to "just slapping 5 squadrons of fighters are on a single hull."

For example, instead of two squadrons like the Dread nought hulled CVA got, what the CVA(O) fielded was three fighter squadrons. (Pick you favorite option, 12*F-4, 12*F-8, 12*A-6 or 12*F-14,12*F-18,12*A-10 or 12*F-14, 6*A-20 , 12*F-18).

Of course, the SSD of the flatbed carrier would need to be redone as it will be very tight trying to fit in a 36 box fighter group, plus the utility squadron (includes SWAC, MRS and Admin shuttles) but that's a whole different discussion from just talking about the concept.

After all, this is Stellar Shadows, not "real star fleet history."

Grin.

Heck, now that there appears to be a Federation F-12 proposal (but not yet published...) perhaps the CVA(O) should have. F-12 Squadron?
