For lack of a better place to post this, I suggest that each race that built and used this class of ships would have named them.
AFAIKT that hasn't happened yet in SFBs, so I propose that there be a discussion on:
1. Should these ships be named or numbered or otherwise made identifiable?
2. What criteria for the names should be used? what would be most appropriate for each race?
I realize that SVC is the final arbiter (decision maker) on such things, but felt that we could atleast contribute to the discussion while G.O.D. (Game Overworked Designer) decides and Before he has Web Mom (S.W.O.R.D. of G.O.D.) dispense J.U.S.T.I.C.E (Judgement Under Steves Terribly Intense Critical Eyes).

Just to get the ball rolling, an example of what I mean would be if the Federation Named the SAC class ships for major rivers on UFP Major member worlds.
In the Case of Earth, names could include Potomac, Amazon, Nile, Loire, Tiber, Ganges etc.
If the Federation wanted instead to name the ships for major Water Falls, there could be: Niagara, Victoria.
If we instead wanted to use auziliary soldiers names (names of persons or animals who aided warriors in difficult times) I would suggest Gungadin, Old Yeller or even (a reach) Benji.
I'm not saying thats what the names should be... just suggesting it for a topioc of discussion.

Some names already exist for these ships.
Scenario SH227.0 in R8 lists Rawalpindi as a Federation SAC, named for the city in Pakistan. LAC Ulsan is also listed in that scenario, named for the city in Korea. It appears that the Federation, or the United Earth Defense Organization (the Earth National Guard) names auxiliary warships after cities. No doubt other National Guards from other planets would use other names.

I actually think the naming of these things would be rather ad hoc. Those SACs and LACs operated by "the fleet" proper might follow some sort of naming convention (cities as John suggests) but any in the hands of national guards, etc might be named all sorts of ways.

Just as an aside, the "name a starship for your lady" product from ADB is sometimes issued as Star Fleet Auxiliary Cruisers (at least it was in the case of -0086 U.S.S. Janet McCammon).
