John Trauger - the one problem with making SFB 3D in any flavor is that it's no longer SFB. (sigh).
Regarding the orange slice shields, you haven't thought it out. Stationay target - a base, maybe. I maneuver to the Z axis of the ship and begin my run. What shield do I hit? "next" move does me no good at all. Ah, I know - it becomes the defender's choice.
Orange slice weapons is even worse as it makes absolutely no sense for some weapons - the worst being the 360's. As you noted, is it a semisphere above or below the ship? or worse for visualizing, a sphere minus some sort of 'divot'?

Above I posted a way to handle the weapons with an aditional mark 'U', 'B', and 'A'.
Some weapons like the Fed saucer phasers might run through the hull with two hard points for each weapon.
I just thought of something for shields. What about having a 7th and 8th shield (top and bottom). You don't add the shields but rather take 1/6th of the shields from all the others. This doesn't reduce the others but rather one sixth of your shields form the top and one sixth form the bottom. If the shield boundry cannot be determined and the top, for example, takes six points of damage, you would apply one point to each shield to the pre-calulated limit. It would be possible to have a down top shield and still have all the others up.
Sort of a hole in the head!

This 3D discussion seems to have taken on a life of its own. Perhaps it would be better off in its own topic.

Done, Tos.
My reply to Kirk spencer will go there.
