As no Galactic Empire is on FUll War Economy, there must, by definition, be peace in this Galaxy!

Here's the original history I put together for my little universe...

The Know Era began at Y1, approximately the time when the twelve dominant races in the known stellar area had developed faster-than-light travel. For over a hundred years they explored, expanding their territories, and absorbing less developed cultures. Contact between the major races was almost unknown. The Frax Union first encountered the Kzinti Hegemony around Y105, then the Tholian Holdfast in Y108. Most of the races either figured or knew that there were other major powers out there, but as FTL travel was still slow, the thought was of little concern.
Everything changed in Y120. Pooling their resources, the Frax and Kzinti, along with data stolen from the Tholians, began to make significant breakthroughs in FTL technology. They discovered faster engines and longer ranged scanners; but their most important discovery was of a communications network of unknown origin and design that spanned all of the known stellar area. By Y125, all fourteen of the major races were in contact with each other, and the advances in FTL technology were commonplace. By Y130, everyone had drawn the same conclusion – there were finite resources in the galaxy, and conflicts over them would be inevitable.
Trade and research pacts were severed overnight. Borders closed. The various powers stopped building civilian and exploration craft and began constructing large navies. Orbital platforms became armed bases. Raiding vessels tested borders, harassed shipping lanes. Tensions mounted, and it seemed that the galaxy would become locked in a cold war.

It was now Y155, and a whole galaxy was waiting quietly, patiently. Cooler heads had prevailed, and twenty five years later ambassadors from the ten major powers had gathered in neutral space to discuss how to move into a long lasting era of peace.

“This is Ober’on K’enobe of the Galactic News Agency, reporting live from Grid M14 where the peace talks are to be held. Ambassadors from the following stellar powers are arriving as we speak; the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Kzinti Hegemony, the Gorn Confederation, the Tholian Holdfast, the Hydran Kingdom, the Lyran Star Empire, the WYN Star Cluster, the Interstellar Concordium, the Lyran Democratic Republic, and the Frax Union.
“The talks will begin momentarily now. This is the most historic event that this generation has, and may ever, see. Let’s go now to the central chamber where the talks are being opened.”
“Sapients of the galaxy, I bid you welcome, and greet you in the name of galactic peace. We have gathered here to discuss how we can... ...galaxy... ...every... What’s happ... God no... ... ...”
“This is Ober’on K’enobe, outside the remains of what used to be the central chamber. We are uncertain as to what has occurred. What we know for certain right now is that the... ...dors are dead. The diplo... ...begun firing on each... ... jamming all trans... ...is broken... The planet is... ...tectonic for... ...another blast... Mayday...”

“This is a Galactic News Agency breaking report. We take you live now to Tev Dorrin at GNA headquarters.”
“A galaxy in chaos. To everyone watching, hello, I’m Tev Dorrin. Two months ago the peace talks ended suddenly after a blast rocked the summit, killing all the ambassadors. We have been able to piece together fragments of transmissions immediately following the blast and have determined the following:
“Immediately after the talks began an explosion destroyed the central chamber and devastated an area of 600 kilometers in diameter. At almost the same time several ships in orbit also suffered damage from an unknown source. Immediately afterwards, the diplomatic escorts began firing on each other, with everyone blaming everyone. During the melee in orbit, tectonic forces began to rock the planet, creating massive cracks in the planet’s crust. Suddenly, the many of the ships in orbit were literally ripped asunder by an unknown force.
“Moments later, another blast erupted on the planet, this time it appeared to rip right through the planet like something had passed through it. This apparently caused the planet to explode. Reports indicate that the local star is no longer there. Several vessels were found drifting several sectors away, their crews dead from some form of radiation exposure.
“Scientists have concluded that the planet had been hit with fragments of a neutron star. A neutron star is formed as a result of a gravitational collapse of a supernova. Instead of the star exploding, it implodes, condensing into super dense matter.
“The first one was likely no more than a millimetre in size, the second one no more than a centimetres in size. Based on the level of radiation in the area, it is estimated that hundreds if not thousands entered the area, devastating the entire region of space. Exotic radiation prevents any attempts at entering the area at this time.
“Experts are puzzled as to how the matter showed up without any warning, as well as how a neutron star could be fragmented. What is truly frightening is the general consensus that this was not a naturally occurring phenomenon. No government has taken responsibility for these events, and tensions are mounting as everyone suspects everyone else.”

Five years have passed, and once again the galaxy is preparing for war. With the possibility of peace no better than being nonexistent, navies have been assembled to begin expansion of empires.

Any news to report?

By ROBERT l cALLAWAY (Callaway) on Tuesday, February 02, 2010 - 04:50 pm: Edit

rumors abound that the Gorn's have crossed the NZ with the Romulan Empire. Reports from imformed souces claim the Roms have lost almost 100 sub-light ships to the Gorn's unconfirmed losses of 18 FF and DD class ships with only minor damage to a couple of SC3 ships. Rumor further state that MEDFOR, SALIN, TRIG are under blockade and are expected fall shortly. This is TMZ all the news not fit to print

Ugh. I knew I dropped off the grid for a bit, didn't realize it had been this long...

Long story short, started school FT again. Had a major incident with my players. One player demanded all of my notes to make sure I was playing fair. Two others started fighting with each other. Then the other players jumped in to support my side...

Got the dust to settle, found a couple of new players and brought them up to speed. All is returning to normal now. Will compose Y161 update here in a bit...

That is a new one, players actually fighting each other over a game. I am glad things have settled down.

The Y161 update:

In short, things are heating up. The Kzinti DB fleet fired a drone bombardment into Klingon territory, doing minor damage to a minor system. The Klingons have made noise about an unprovoked attack, the Kzinti say it was "a mistake". Both sides are beginning to consolidate their forces, but neither side is ready to strike, yet.

The Frax, who are uncomfortably close to both sides, are trying to declare their neutrality, but because they have some developed sites that would make great "jumping" platforms in a war. This has sent them into a heightened state of readiness.

The Gorn and Tholians are both approaching a sector with a minor colony, and there's bound to be friction based on who gets there first. The same goes for the Lyrans and the ISC.

The Federation-Tholian treaty is almost secure (set backs due to a new player), and the Hydrans and the Romulans are minding their own businesses.

I fully expect a Klingon-Kzinti conflict in the next year or two, along the lines of border raids and such. I can't see either of them committing to an armed conflict - yet.

Me thinks the Drone Bombardment was a test (perhaps to see how it works and how effective it is). That is the kind of fighting I like to see!
