It shouldnt be able to be used as a weapon, it has all sorts of add ons for extra intel it doesnt have room on it for a warhead

Giving it a ECM option is also not space efficient, if you want to make OTHER probes to do this go ahead but to combine it all into one package is a near automatic NO from the Steves

and This was never my idea Jeff all ive ever said is a better intel package, all this other stuff is other peoples Ideas.

I asked for a sensor buoy to be dropped off for long term intel not a probe, something dropped out of a shuttle bay or by a shuttle that sits and gathers intel on a planet or anomoly while the ship goes off and looks at other things, if the buoy has to be retrieved or if it has a transmitter to relate details as it finds them is about the only thing needing discussion with it

Reid,

I've always pictured this proposal as modular swapping on a better probe bus.

The probe could do better intel, be modified as a last ditch weapon, changed to be a jammer (or "sonar") or just have a better endurance factor. It could be any one of these functions.... not all of them.

Just give me a probe designed to track gaseous anomalies.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Monday, April 11, 2011 - 10:34 pm: Edit

Ah... I think I see a type 6 Gaseous Anomaly probe on the horizon... but what kind of combat/ tactical issues would it have in star fleet battles?

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Monday, April 11, 2011 - 10:46 pm: Edit

Reid,

The steves will pick and choose what they like of the proposal, and discard the rest. (assuming that there is anything here that they like...)

As the class 1 probe is the original probe (no changes beyond a new nomenclature) it would only be adopted if there were something worth publishing of the other proposed ideas.

the CLass 2 probe is extended range (up to 12 hexes) but at the cost of a smaller intel package that yields 1/2 the amount of data that the type 1 could generate. the type 2 has half the combat/dmage potential of the class 1 probe
if used as an emergency Anti Matter weapon.

the Class 3 probe (also called the "Jammer Pod") is a white noise Electronic Warfare noise maker that generates some form of natural ECM... the amount and duration is still being debated.

the Class4 is a long duration probe with the mission of your sensor buoy. for combat purposes it has the ability to conduct scientific research ONLY on the 32 impulse of each turn after launch (up to 32+ turn duration).

the Class 5 probe is George Duff's "Sonar Probe", and has its own topic for discussion.

Not sure if Loren was serious about wanting a probe for Gaseous Anomoly research, but I'm willing to entertain the idea... but what klind of SFBs combat ability would such a probe have?

Are there other ideas for Probe designs?

It could tell you which member of the prime Team had Broccoli for dinner last night

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Monday, April 11, 2011 - 11:00 pm: Edit

And knowing you, you'd probably program your Orion Photon Torpedo to track that team member even if he/she were on board a cloaked ship...

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 - 01:25 pm: Edit

I was joking, making a reference to ST:6. Such a probe would track cloaks and provide lock-on opertunities. I don't think that would fly.

But, in SFB, claoked ships can have shields up so it would hardly be as devestating, but still not workable.

I don't think it's a good idea.

Thats fine, Loren, a little levity is always welcome.

Type 6 probe is still available!

Any suggestions for what it is?

Is that the one used in alien close encounters
