Mike

Quick note regarding the plasma discussions:
1 Pl-S + 1 Pl-F = 2xPhot or 2xDisr in terms of "boxes" occupied.

My system has this - sort of. DSR and Photon are 2 spaces each, Plas-F is 1 (1 hardpoint), Plas-G is 2 (1.5 hardpoints), Plas-S is 3 (2 hardpoints).

Photons and DSR take up 1 hardpoint each, but then plasma ships get a hardpoint bonus.

While SVC has never said this, it would appear that a non-upgradable Pl-G only takes up a single box. While this is merely a supposition on my part, the available evidence seems to support it.

(Please note that none of this affects Orion option mounts. It still takes two entire adjacent centerline option mounts to hold a Pl-S on an Orion ship. Consider it the implied inefficiencies of the option mount system.)

I've not done Orions, but point taken.

A KDR has two Pl-S and two Pl-D. It does not have any Pl-F.

This is not a problem...

Finally, based on the above, I would argue that a cruiser should be able to mount up to 4 non-upgradable Pl-G (only) with no shock effects.

This is also doable. While the Plas-G are "upgradeable" in my system, such upgrades would exceed hardpoint limitations, so if the player wanted 3 plas-S, the 4th Plas-G would have to go. Currently, 3Plas-S can be put on a heavy cruiser in my system.

Also note that the Gorn BCH mounts 3xPl-S + 2xPl-F.

Ow. Need to sort that out. BCHs are proving to be a bugbear.

Should have had "just" two FA HB on the broken ship (it paid for only two).

Mike is correct on the KDR torp mix, oops. I think I must have confused it with the KRL.

Haven't checked 1.1 yet, but in 1.0 F torps took 1 heavy and 1 phaser mount, same as G torps.

I wouldn't worry about being able to design all SFB ships under David's system - a "CA" hull with stats chosen to match a Fed CA isn't going to permit a Klingon D7, let alone a Dragoon.

Mark:
In addition to the "not less than the base bhcp"
rule how about adding the bhcp can not be reduced by more than 30%, so players can adjust the bhcps to an extent, but they still must keep the "basic" parts. I hate constraining anyone as far as ship construction goes, but maybe it is for the best to avoid the most egregious "munchkinism".

David:
I received your shipcon, but I am having trouble with my server. I will post it ASAP.

Scott, others

Thanks to multiple comments from Mark and Andrew, version 1.1 quickly became outdated. The shipcon is now at version 1.2 (will send to Scott tommorow) and is quite robust. I'm going to leave it for a short while (couple of weeks min) to try out some designs, and then may get back to working on racial traits, varients, and broadening the scope of the weapons.

Pretty much any SFB ship of the main races should now be possible, but there could still be some queries over why the races did the particular designs they used - few ppl would *choose* to design the original Fed CA the way it was. The design system will however skew ppl to design something close.

Progress note

Version 1.2 of the shipcon is proving to be more extensive than I previously thought, thanks to Mark's help. When it finally comes online, you should see rules for some Omega systems, X-ships, freighters, Q-ships, and a whole load of other stuff (e.g. mothballing). Currently, we are working on the Orions, engine doubling, and stealth. Web and Cloak are bugbears we have subconciously avioded so far, but will have to be addressed soon.

Currently, we have no plans to include EY technology and ship classes. The Shipcon sort of starts off at MY tech levels - a low tech cruiser will be similar to a Fed CA, but with only 20 warp, no overload or prox photon functions perhaps 1 less photon, Phas-2s instead of Phas-1s, and significantly weaker shields.

I am still having trouble with my server, some day it may actually be working! I will post your new version ASAP.

Does the link on the main post have the most current versions of these systems? Has there been any more work on the ship con system?

Nobody at ADB has worked on the ship modification/construction system in a decade.

The bottom line is nobody could come up with a leakproof system, and anything else just causes fist fights. Given so many ideas for new SFB products, the limited market for this one (four times as many people want R11 as SCM), and the difficulty in doing it, we just haven't even considered working on it (well, not for more than a few minutes at a time).

Thanks Steve...I didn't really think that I would recieve a offical ADB response...I always thought that any kind of ship construction book was something that you guys never really wanted to do...I was just interested in the fan related stuff previously posted in the thread for intrest sake. I personally can't wait till we get a GPD:Ship Con Manual, after GSpace4 comes out...

Plus...it was great meeting you at a convention in Dallas about 6 or 7 years ago...I was the only SFB person to show up for the tourney you were planning on running...your gift of SSD's and map packs, plus the signing of my Tourney Tactis book is something I hold to the openess and general good intentions that you, your staff and other at ADB have for us SFB Fans as one of your greatest assest and accomplishments...
