Destroyer Squadron Commander campaign update:

1. Sign-ups are open now! I'll set 7/11/11 as the last day to sign up for the initial phase. Rules posted in this thread on 7/3 for those who missed them.

2. War destroyers are allowed, but please no HDWs with all those NWOs. Gorn BDD is OK, HBD is not.

3. Any variant built on a DD or DW hull (scout, carrier, etc.) is allowed assuming it meets all the ship restrictions in rule 2.0.

4. Squadron duels will be fought on a double-size fixed map (42 x 60). There is no barrier but any ship leaving the map is considered to have disengaged.

Mike,

You might want to rethink the Gorn HDD. I don't think you want Warcruisers between your Destroyer fleets.

By Mike Johnson (Akira) on Monday, July 04, 2011 - 08:11 am: Edit

Koen- thx, post edited.

By Francois Lemay (Princeton) on Monday, July 04, 2011 - 09:20 am: Edit

Mike,
Best way to ensure no heavy DD's get in is to restrict the MC of the ship to a max of 0.5 MC

I have my Gorn fleet ready to go.

Cheers
Frank

Even just need to control things by saying no more than 4 ships, no fewer than 3, and keep the 325 BPV cap. Or even go for a lower cap.

Im thinking Vudar could be fun. 1xDWL, 2xDW.

Never played them before so will be fun - much like playing Hydran in Frank's game.

But for my campaign... not sure what Id go if I played. Andro perhaps :)

Mike, I have to admit your campaign is so simple, it appeals to me despite my "Farthest Stars" burnout.

Are you going to start a topic/thread for it?

By John M Ledbetter (Daltwisney) on Monday, July 04, 2011 - 10:51 pm: Edit

Hydran Destroyer Squadron is ready for mirth, mayhem, and methane.

By Jason Langdon (Jaspar) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 12:45 am: Edit

Hydrans look average in Y175, but once the era of Megapacks opens up, they will be NASTY !

By John M Ledbetter (Daltwisney) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 06:46 am: Edit

Hydrans are always fine. You just have to work your fleet. We don't need no stinkin' Munchkinpacks!

Now, a Singularity Cannon to clear out those pesky ECM drones, that we could use!

By Mike Johnson (Akira) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 11:48 am: Edit

Dale- yes I am in contact with Jean to get a thread set up.

C'mon down and join us!

By Mike Johnson (Akira) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 11:49 am: Edit

Anyone with a destroyer squadron ready to go please forward to me for approval- send email to rushfanatic_2112 at yahoo dot com

By Francois Lemay (Princeton) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 12:13 pm: Edit

Dale,
Hope to see you on the battle fiield !

We never did get our Gorn/Pel patrol battle started.
:(

Gorn Fleet sent in to Mike.

Cheers
Frank

Some additional discussion has prompted the following rules additions/clarifications:

1. No squadron may have more than one escort, and then it must be accompanied by its historic carrier which must have at least 75% of it fighter complement.

2. All Basic, Advanced, and Commander level rules will be used. No Optional rules will be used.

3. There are opportunities to munchkinize squadrons within the existing rules. The Feds, LDR, and Orions come to mind. I ask you to please not go down this path! If you want to fly the Feds or LDR, take a scout as one of your ships. If flying Orion, please email me to discuss weapon selections.

4. Remember that this campaign will involve a variaety of scenarios, and ship balance will be more important in the long run than sheer firepower.

More Squadron Commander updates:

-Changing the name to Squadron Commander from Destroyer Squadron Commander. At some point in the furure we may switch to different ship classes.

-Map size for player duels has been reduced to a single regular map (42x30). I have made this change after someone pointed out that no one has long-range plasma in this size class- making it just about impossible to land any on a double size map.

By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 01:38 pm: Edit

All of these updates sound very solid.

And just to clarify--we get to build a squad of up to 325 BPV. We can save points for refits/upgrades, in case we end up in the future (i.e. if I pick 3 ships that total 310 BPV in y175, I get to hold onto that 15 extra BPV for upgrades if I end up in y185 for a scenario). Plus, for each scenario, we'll get to buy the traditional 20% Commander's Options (special drones, marines, drogues, shuttle modifications, t-bombs, whatever). This all seem correct?

By John M Ledbetter (Daltwisney) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 03:56 pm: Edit

@Peter: Previously, Mike posted 15% for Commander's Options per scenario. Everything else looks to be as I understood it.

Cargo Sled Squadron Commander!

By John M Ledbetter (Daltwisney) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 04:32 pm: Edit

@Mike,
Will we be able to 'break out' any Spare shuttles/fighters listed in the MSC to replace losses if we choose not to use a Full Resupply?

By Mike Johnson (Akira) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 04:38 pm: Edit

John- yes breaking out spare shuttles between scenarios is allowed outside of the full resupply.

By Mike Johnson (Akira) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 04:41 pm: Edit

Peter- looks like John already answered your questions! But thanks for your input so far, and if you play please smash Mr. Ledbetter's squadron for the cargo sled comment :)

By Dale McKee (Brigman) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 04:59 pm: Edit

Mike - yeah you've got my interest. Count me in, just lemme pick a race and build a squadron. ;)

Frank - spent last week at Disneyland with the fam, so had no time, but sometime we can pick that back up again!

By Dale McKee (Brigman) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 06:03 pm: Edit

Suggestion - incorporate the updates into a rules repost, so they're all in the same place?

By Dale McKee (Brigman) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 06:11 pm: Edit

Mike, at the risk of setting of SFB debatism, wanted to ask about a few things:

DD's: Are FFBs allowed, such as the Klingon E6 or Fed FFB? I assume not because of the "DD" designation stipulation, but felt it was worth asking...

Races: Peladine allowed? CL 28 Paravians?

By Jason Langdon (Jaspar) on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 06:20 pm: Edit

Peladines are no longer on SFBOL, are they?

So you'd have to wait until whatever product they are about to appear in is released plus 3 months.

Mike, given its SFBOL you dont need to stick to 42x30 or 42x60. If you want to help plasma guys but not also aid the Ph-G races too much you can always go for 42x42 or something else which is somewhere between 42x30 and 42x60.

I think you should also make a rule that you must have a minimum 3 ships, maximum 4 ships, just in case people go for some very silly choices.
