Let me know a good day Peter and I'll adjust my schedule accordingly!
By Francois Lemay (Princeton) on Wednesday, November 02, 2011 - 03:40 pm: Edit |
Eastcoastfolk has had an accident at work and will be unable to finish this phase from his email he sent out.
Luckily, nothing serious and he expects a full recovery but it will take time.
Mike, I guess we can let Chris and my original battle result stand thus making me ready for the next scenario.
Or we can find me another player for scenario 3.
Whatever you decide is fine by me.
Cheers
Frank

Give him the win Mike for being honorable (as much as that means being Kzin)!

Troy--cool. I gotta play, like, three tournament games in the next couple weeks (Masters, FFAC, RAT37 when I get an opponent), but soon, soon there will be a squadron game!

Squadron Commander
Peladine Vs. Lyran
Bridge DWL Kratos
Commander Jungletoy stood on the bridge contemplating his next move. It was quiet except for the muted sound of battlenet noise in the background. At last he settled on a course of action that would preserve his outnumbered fleet. His hands rubbed together as if the bridge were a freezer. His eyes narrowed and the smallest bends of smile could be detected in the baring of his incisors. He moved with intent purpose to his command chair and seated himself. Fritz smiled to himself at the science station, as he had played many games with Jungletoy growing up and the rubbing hands usually precipitated some sort of masterful tactic employment for Jungletoy. He touched the battlenet com link. " Arm standard disruptors! , Figmund you're my shadow and you've got bubble duty, romeo three, sierra five, Elsbeth stay on station, full fire solution assist for two shooters- tango delta-delta, maintain anti drone ops. On my lead, good hunting JT out!"
He's knows he can't turn inside us and its not likely he'll let us close to 80,000 kliks without swimming through a lot of plasma. Jungletoy mused as he tried to out think his adversary. Better to use the power for speed, more so with drones and plasma in flight and closing. He would dance with these peculiar predators but at a distance, until an opportunity to cripple or cleanly evade presented itself. Lyran combat hulls were designed for sustained long range operations without logistics support for their weapons systems, the Peladine were not. The Commander reached up and touched the secure commlink behind his ear and waited for Captains Elsbeth and Figmund to come online. "Figmund here" "Elsbeth here" JT lowered his voice. "Elsbeth mind the ESGs. Figmund let's try to sync up on our disruptor firing solutions. Stay tight, trust your training. Good luck." JT touched his earpiece and focused on the combat display. "Helm warp two-point-nine. Get us on that DD's #4" He touched the comm button on his chair. "Thorvald." "Yes sir." "It's that time brother." "Understood Sir." Jungletoy's attention returned to the tactical display.
Transporter Room One DWL Kratos
Major Thorvald was an imposing figure standing a full head over the average Lyran and stronger than two of them. His jet black fur and dark green eyes added to his malevolent aura. He returned the well-worn pipe to his mouth and turned to face his Commandos. They were sitting quietly with their high tech combat gear at their feet. Thorvald walked to the center of the group, removed the unlit pipe from his mouth. "Go time gentlemen! Lieutenant White-claw, Chief Science Officer Fritz will be joining your team at transporter room two. It's a control smash and grab JT style". He wants to capture the ship in such a way that we can restore navigation before reinforcements can arrive. Ships schematics with target selections been uploaded to all A-Teams. We bounce in drop charges, Fritz does his thing we bounce out. Lelantos team assignments are primary on the emergency bridge and secondary on the G plasma launcher, Nyx team assignments are primary and secondary on the the auxiliary bridge and we've primary bridge duty. Make sure your BP hosts are prepped and standing by for skeleton flight ops. Flight plans with rendezvous points have been uploaded to the portable navcomms." "Yes sir!"
Thorvald looked at his A-team. He knew they heard every word of his brief and reiteration for his team was unnecessary. He picked up his gear and walked to the transporter pads. The commandos took there positions on the transport pad and began their pre-drop prep. Thorvald's commando teams spanned the the squadron and were collectively known as Thorvald's Ghosts. They preferred hand-to-hand and stealth to heavy weapons unless they were fighting the Kzin. In that case the weapons lockers would be empty. Most places they transported to were full of engineer types and if they didn't wish to participate in the festivities, Thorvald's commandos were content to stun them. JT preferred to take the control systems of the ship then offer terms of surrender. Most ships that they would tangle with only had 30 or so crew and were fairly easy to control through compartmentalization. With more boarding parties inbound after the initial rush the process was a quick affair. With any luck they would be taking the Peladine Destroyer home with them.
Bridge DWL Kratos
"What the..?!" Jungletoy toggled the display . "Sir , they're bugging out.." Jungletoy jabbed the battle com button. "All ships turn to mark 4.235. Let's get those shuttles onto the Nyx and get out of the area." He walked to view screen and watched the three Peladine ships rapidly leaving the sector. No point in pursuing as they were outgunned and he was quite sure they would meet again they always did in this universe. He reached up and hit his secure comm link. "Thorvald, have your teams stand down, the Peladines have another date." "Already done sir, perhaps next time." Came Thorvalds reply. "Indeed. Thorvald have a detail escort the pilots on the Peladine shuttles and make sure there are no unpleasantries aboard" "Weapons, activate both ESGs lets clear the drones and run the plasma out. On the way by transport the security teams to the shuttles, Nyx will tractor them in on the way by. Once they are onboard set a course for Starbase 46." "Aye, aye sir!"
"Nyx hailing sir." "On screen please Ensign." The image of Captain Elsbeth filled the display. "Commander, shuttles on board. Sensors have detected the a temporal anomaly in sector 456. It's on our way and I like to stop and get some readings." Jungletoy thought for a moment. "Sure Captain we need some time to rest and refit. A science expedition will do everyone some good."
Temporal Anomaly, Sector 456
The three war destroyers were positioned just on the edge of the swirling anomaly. They could not be detected as the interference from the distorted space blended them into the backdrop of space noise. There was a flurry of activity around the ships with shuttles going in and out of the bays and small figures working on various parts of the hulls. Battle damaged hull plates were being replaced by new black anodized metal plates. Jungletoy had an extensive network of characters, hidey-holes and caches all over the alpha sector, some he had never visited but his network was extensive and loyal. Operating exclusively in the wilds required information and Jungletoys intelligence network was legendary. Because of this he never fell victim to the whims of the Lyran political machine. The Orion cartels knew of him but only a few of the privateersfrom each cartel were in league with Jungletoy's operation. He had dealt with them honestly and everyone benefited from the exchange of information and spoils. He had thrown lucrative opportunities to the various cartels and they were always responsive to his calls.
The Orion cruiser and a small freighter had just departed after off-loading much needed supplies. Included were four LDR phaser gatling assemblies for Fritz. The Chief Science Officer never understood why the Lyran Hierarchy had such a hard time integrating the LDR gatlings into all Lyran ships. Jungletoy agreed and made the necessary arrangements for this endeavor. This project was earmarked for the Nyx to improve it's close range fire support effectively quadrupling it's phaser suite. Anything the Far Stars military machine or the benefactor funding his covert missions would not provide, Jungletoy would make happen through this network. One more delivery and they would be ready to request new orders.
Executive briefing Room DWL Kratos
Jungletoy stood at the view port in the briefing room with tactical binoculars to his eyes staring intently at the hull of the Lelantos. "Very nice Figmund, he said studying the image of a scantily clad Lyran female seductively straddling a disruptor cannon with stylized words on the barrel that read 'From Lyra with Love'. He smiled and thought to himself how he had been scanning through some of the historical data on the terrans that Captain Elsbeth had collected through their dealings with Orions. He had recalled seeing ancient air ships with Terran females in similar positions. He reasoned every race that chose the way of the warrior needed inspiration and a reminder of what they fought for. He shifted his view to the Nyx and scanned across the hull. Two blood red crossed bolts under a malevolent eye. The crossed bolts represented the Communications Core and the eye Military Intelligence. The red represented courage and the white piping around the perimeter signified honor. It was also the same tattoo everyone on the Nyx crew had burned into their arms. He looked at the large block gun metal gray letters NYX, LELANTOS and he knew the same style bedecked his ship..KRATOS.
One of Captain Elsbeth suggestion as her disdain for the Lyran nomenclatures was well known. She instead chose ancient Terran gods of the Greek pantheon. Kratos- God of power and sovereign rule. Lelantos- God of hunters skill and stalking. Nyx- Goddess of night. They might not be gods but in this 10,000 kilometer area they reigned supreme. He returned to the conference table setting the binoculars on the credenza as he passed. "I think were done here. I'm awaiting orders from HQ as to our next mission so we'll stay on station here. Return to normal staffing and make sure we are combat ready. I have three cases of Ireilien boar and three kegs of Orion ale for each ships warrior feast. The list of promotion candidates will join me at the Commanders table this evening. Tonight we feast fellow warriors, for tomorrow we may be dead!" The officers stood and left the room. Jungletoy touched the comm panel. "Fritz, how's the sector look?" "All clear JT, just some civilian traffic at the six-hundred-forty thousand klics." After tonight it would be back to business but tonight they would dine in the shuttle bays with the blast shields open. A spectacular view of the anomaly should inspire the entire squadron.
Commanders Quarters, DWL Kratos
Jungletoy eyes opened as he sat at the foot of his bed for a moment then donned his command smock and made his way to the bridge. Everyone seemed renewed and sharp after a weeks rest while the science officers gathered data on the anomaly. The squadrons supplies were restocked and the crews were once again anxious to get underway. He continued walking through the ship in a long circuitous route to the bridge but enjoyed banter with the different groups on the ship. His way of answering questions on the morning status report while maintaining contact with his entire crew. He stopped to watch Thorvald's two commando groups perform physical training in shuttle bay one. He arrived on the bridge and greeted Fritz who was working at his science station. "JT there's a Hydran heavy cruiser patrol with CV support moving away. But that is not bad news. The bad news is long range scanners indicate Andromedan on course for orbit of the anomaly. It will put them approximately 320 klicks off our port"
Jungletoy touched the secure com link. "Elsbeth, are you positive we are invisible?" "Yes sir and we shut down the sensors when we detected the Andromedan. Unless they come within visual range they should fly right by. The magnetic fluxuations will cover us." JT, the Hydrans are returning!" Fritz reported. JT spoke without hesitation. "Rig for silent running, we are spectators in this. No shields and no fire control. On my lead. JT out." He reached down and touched the intercom. " Battle stations! Fritz I'll need shields and warp on my command." Jungletoy returned his attention to the developing battle unfolding on the tactical display. The Intruder began disgorging unknown sattelite ships. It was a big Andromedan hull, the scintillating greenish hull covers with hexoganal plates was an awesome sight. But he knew this was the alpha predator in this sector and the Hydrans were about to experience quick and violent deaths. The Hydrans enjoyed an initial seven to one advantage but that was rapidly diminishing. The screen filled with ST2 fighters and the two battle groups approached each other. The battle raged for a few minutes but it was becoming increasingly clear the Hydrans were were over matched.
One of the Hydran cruisers was taking critical damage from the intruder was then displaced to the center of the anomaly. There was a bright flash that seemed to be everywhere at once. Then a shock wave emanated from the edge of the anomaly in all directions as it hit the ensuing battle participants they were vaporized. The sphere of expanding debris reached it's zenith then began to contract back towards the anomaly center. Jungletoy was about to issue commands when everything was once again bathed in a flash of blinding light. The bright light faded and the deafening silence was replaced by battlenet squawk and the normal sounds of the bridge returned. The ships that were on the tactical display had vanished. Navigation reported that the computer was recalculating their position.
"Go to weapons status three! Bring up the shields and power fire control!" He touched the battle net console. "Does anyone know where we are?" Figmund's voice came over the speaker. "The approaching Gorn battle destroyers may be able to tell us something." JT chuckled, Figmund was always unflappable in any situation and used humor as his weapon of choice. The question in JT's mind was who was further from home? "Looks like they're not here to welcome us to the neighborhood. I want full weasel posture on all ships. Nyx get your big brain personnel figuring out why and where we are." Jungletoy returned his attention to the three Gorn destroyers approaching. Three sleek black silhouettes rose slowly from anomalies edge and banked gracefully towards the oncoming Gorns.

Offical notice to all campaign participants: This campaign is ended as of today. My thanks to everyone who played games and contributed to the BBS conversation.
I attempted, and failed, to create a self-sustaining campaign somehwat like netkill. I learned that I need to do regular posting (and frankly prodding) to keep a campaign like this rolling. If I get to a point where I can commit that much time I will consider restarting the campaign because there was a high level of interest in the concept.
Thanks again everyone and feel free to use those squadrons in pickup battles!
By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 - 08:46 pm: Edit |
Well, it was a good attempt--I think the reality of the situation is that a lot of folks have eyes a lot bigger than their appetite; people will happily volunteer to play anything, but when it comes time to actually arrange for games with actual other people, many folks discover that they have less time/less flexible of a schedule than they had envisioned. And then once things start falling behind, nothing picks up momentum like doing nothing, so things fall apart quickly.
It was a good attempt, though!

Awwww, I really like this format, the individual scenario was interesting to see everyones different approaches to the challenge. I was looking forward to a possible Spinners Moon scenario or Agememnons Maze not to mention giving the Gorns some ESG luv. It was also a great learning experience to fly against some of the SFB elite and old timers.
Mike if your interested in developing this further I have some ideas I'd like to share. Thanks again for your time and effort!

Thanks guys, and I hope to try it again at a point where I can be more of a bird-dog to keep things moving.
Troy I'd be happy to hear any ideas you have.

Troy! I'm still willing to play that squadron game for grins!
I got a week off in February. We should arrange to play then.

Sweet, I'm available anytime!

Sorry to see this close but understandable.
I like the format but admit I am not a big fan of the solo battles.
Hopefully this will fly one more try !
Thanks for the work you put into it Mike !
Cheers

I think the format was good, monster scenario's aren't really my thing, but the hardest part is the assigned matchups.
The beauty of netkill is that you can play whoever is available the day you happen to be. With that change it could be easier to get the games completed. Just like in NK not eveyone will complete all games but the dedicated few can reach the minimum games played to get Squire or Sir titles and compete for the free membership time.
Im sorry I couldn't finish it I did have the best intentions of doing it, but scheduling proved to be nearly impossible with some players and RL kicked in and I had less time to play than I had hoped.
