Status?
AFAIK, the bandits for 4 of the gunboats are at 100 hexes, the two gunboats that got intercepted by the fighter patrols, are somewhat delayed, and the incoming fighters are actually behind the drone waves/gunboats.
Unless I miss my guess, that means that 4 of the F-16's are off map, and will not be in a position to participate in the coming action.
Col Knight, and "fighter Command" have given orders for the remaining fighters to take positions "On Map" at the stated ranges, and the Drones/gunboats begin impulse #25 turn #1 at 100 hexes from the planet.
ground base firing of phaser IV's could begin on turn #1, impulse #32 (at range 93?!?) and still be able to fire again on turn #2 after 1/4 turn delay.
Somebody needs to start an Energy allocation for the ground base(s).

The buzzer was insistant. the flashing alert light on the control panel was bright and not pleasant to look at.
Vern Leinnike awoke with a start at the combination of the sound and flashing alerts.
wiping the sleep from his eyes with one hand, sitting up in the pilots chair he had been sleeping in, he activated the tactical screen.
What he saw caused his adrennaline levels to spike.
slapping the general quarters switch, the klaxons starting ringing all over the ship. Hitting the intercom system for ship wide use, he said "all hands, brace for evasive manuvers."
With his other hand, he activated the helm position for direct control, removing the auto pilot functions that had been controlling the ship.
Then, deliberately, he activated the communications system, coded for "squeal/burst" transmission, and said:
"Caledonia traffic control, this is the merchant seeker "Go for Broke", 5 days out of Gavavutu System, Vern Leinnike commanding.
We are two zero niner K-klicks out from you on bearing 090 mark I. we have a Klingon gunboat and a flight of drones inbound to your lcation at speed Warp 3.2, 35 K-klicks from our present location. We are attempting to evade. Good luck, Go for broke out."
Hitting the transmission switch with one hand, Vern spun the Go for Broke on its axis in a HET, started the eratic manuvers, and increased the full accelleration that the Go for Broke had available.
thinking to himself, I wonder what that Klingon will do, attack us, or continue on with his mission?
the choice would spell the difference between life or death for the Go for Broke and every man, woman and child on board.
HQ, 429th PDU, New Caledonia.
the marine who had been posted to the civilian Comm watch, saw the alert light that indicated a message had been received.
Fumbling with the command linkages, (his MOS was PFC, with a marksmanship badge for phaser rifle, a month into his first tour of active duty) he vetted the message and reported:
"Major Wile, sir? we received a comm signal from a merchant seeker."
"Play the message, marine".
after hearing the message, Major Wile stepped over to the comm board, and using the opportunity to train the marine in Comm procedures, said, "Achnowledge the message", "like this, (and with experienced movements, executed the task by way of demonstration. when the Marine showed that he could do it, Major wile said quietly to the marine, "good job, thats the way its done.")
Then turning to Col Knight, Major wile asked:
"Any reply sir?"

Jeff.
You need to put some jamming into that comminique. The defence tactics would have been very different if they had known that gunboats were accompanying the drone wave.

David Slatter, I envisioned it sort of like the western union telegram delivery boy peddling his bicycle up to General Short an hour and a half after the japs bombed the stuffing out of the bases in Hawaii on December 7th, 1941.
with the delay caused by the inexperienced marine at HQ,s the contact information actually came in after the PDU had other contact reports indicating the enemy strength (namely the fighter recon patrol).
It was meant for "color" more than an attempt to "change history".
Col. Knight would already have been informed of the composition of the enemy forces...

Jeff, "PFC" is not an MOS; it's a rank. MOS is Military Occupational Specility, such as Eleven-Bravo for grunt Infantry.

Garth, Sorry, I was using "PFC" to mean Private first class...and I see that I posted it in a way that did indeed look like I meant it as Military occupational specialty...thats what I get for posting in the middle of the night during a bout with insomnia. (shessh!)
Sorry for the error.

Kreldar Fielder hugged her children tightly.
Her Klingon Blood was burning with the passion of combat, but she had the responsibility for keeping her 4 children safe.
Hans Jr, her Klingon/human son was standing in front of her and his 3 siblings, clutching his 22 cal. single shot hunting rifle. the other children, orphans of the Caladonia massacre during the liberation of the planet, were frightened by the new and terrifying experiences of the Civil Defense shelter.
Kreldar didnt know what was happening above the planet, the state of the defenses or whether her husband, Hans still lived, or not.
She only knew that she would protect her family with every fiber of her being, to that last gasp of air, and touching the hilt of her dagger, to the last dagger thrust. She had given her oath to Hans, and she would die before failing in her blood promise to her soul mate.
"Live well, my husband. If necessary, die well."
