If the ship is traveling anywhere close to the speed of light, I don't think that there will be much aging going on. At least as that little bit of relativity I understand leads me to think that.

However, it is a really cool idea being as how Roms and Gorns get the shaft on weapons officers.

Yeah, you need to stipulate whether it stacks with a LWO and/or outstanding crew.

Luxuriantly hand-crafted of only the finest ASCII.

I can understand that crews don't appreciate each trip act as an time machine. Imagine how fun it would be to go home on a leave and find your children 10 years older!!!

By Jeff Williams (Jeff) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 02:36 am: Edit

This is a really strange and bizarre concept. I like it.

Actually, it'd be more like, going 'home' on leave and finding your grandkids you didn't know you had in retirement homes.

At least, for light speed relativity. Trek tends to dodge the whole issue somehow, but it's never really explained.

For Warp travel, it's easy - you're not really moving (in normal space), so the whole matter isn't relevent.

For Impulse travel, it's not so simple - it should apply. In trying to dodge that, one source claimed that "impulse" was some sort of acronym for a warp system powered by APRs instead of matter/antimatter.

By David Lang (Dlang) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 02:54 pm: Edit

however since these ships are not making long sublight trips this really isn't relevent to this proposal (which does sound interesting)

as for the problem of kids on the ship, the 'kids' could grow up planetside and when they 'enlist' they go through the normal training and then move onto the 'family' ship for advanced training. no need for babies on a cramped ship.

what's the cost of this option?

By Alex Chobot (Alendrel) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 02:54 pm: Edit

There's also the fact that a lot if your impulse manuever is not at significant fractions of c. IIRC, the NextGen Tech Manual stated "full impulse" was about 0.5c. For SFB, there's undoubedtly a bit of a fudge in in exactly how fast impulse only is on the map, and those even then near c speeds aremaintianed outside of combat/emergency situations.

guys, sublight roms have warp speed capability, just not tactically.

By Richard K. Glover (Fahrenheit) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 05:43 pm: Edit

Christopher;

Doesn't really matter, since the WB/WE/KE/KEX had an R-torp for well over a hundred years. A family that was posted to the same ship generation after generation isn't that much of a stretch.

Oh, I am all for this idea.

I just wanted to point out for the folks that were saying "spending 100 years on board during the crusie" etc.

So has some one written this up and sent it to SVC?
There nuttin' but fun in this so c'mon, sen dit.

By Jeff Tonglet (Blackbeard) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 09:34 pm: Edit

Should I post it to another part of this site, or is there an email address?

By David Lang (Dlang) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 09:37 pm: Edit

The email has just been sent.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 10:41 pm: Edit

I hope you mentioned the possitive feed back in this thread.

By Jeff Tonglet (Blackbeard) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 10:56 pm: Edit

Of course. And thanks, guys.

The response from SVC to the email I sent:

Quote:

Maybe for stellar shadows. I could see it being a soap opera by Olivette Roche.

Just one question: Who in the world is Olivette Roche?

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 12:51 am: Edit

Olivette Roche is a journalist in the Federation that is creative when doing her reporting. (I think.) She's a SFU character from SSJ.

That's too bad. I mean congrats that it may get published in SSJ but I rather liked it for the SFU. It's not like it would be pervasive or anything. I would apply only to a few ships. And has great GPD value.

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 10:49 pm: Edit

Loren is correct. She is an "actual" SFU character that creates SSJ "history".

Calling Olivette a journalist makes Geraldo look legitimate. Besides being a "journalist" she also makes "historical" holovids. ("Historical" only in the eye of the maker.)

I believe the name is a play on Oliver Stone.

By Jeff Tonglet (Blackbeard) on Sunday, January 26, 2003 - 11:13 pm: Edit

No wonder I didn't get the joke.
I saw Roche, and pronounced it roeSH, not rock.

By Jeff Williams (Jeff) on Monday, January 27, 2003 - 02:30 am: Edit

Hmm...a soap opera...

"As the Warbird Turns"??
"Guiding Plasma"?
