Fair enough.
No need to get bogged down in drone/anti-drone tactics.

Mega fighters existed but few squadrons had them so it is not a good indication of the flow of history. Please note that my proposal specifically mentioned mega-fighters would be used exclusively.

Loren,
Your task is making a case that fighters are worthwhile as defensive units while not worthwhile as offensive units.
Using the ability of X-ships to kill fighters en masse as your argument against offense-use fighters means they're also useless for defense too.

No because the fighter remain with the fleet. The fighters are far more easilly recovered, pilots more easilly rescued, and the attacking fleet is within range of the defensive fleets weapons so the attack does not get to act with impunity.
I didn't say that they were useless for attacking either. Only that the original fighter doctrin became too ineffective. Certainly if you have a fleet of ships fighting another and halfway through you have a squadron of RC megafighters launching, the enemy is going to think twice before approaching closely. But they could be highly effective as a fleet defense unit even in the X2 era.

Now I'm confused. What exactly are you proposing? I thought you were proposing some kind of new-defensive-primary fighter and putting it forth as the only role left that a fighter could survive at.
what you're saying now sounds more like a tactical doctrine I could plug an existing fighter into.
Players will work tactics out for themselves ragardless of what the rules say fleets did historically. RE PFs and warp packs.

I'm proposing that destroyer carriers with short squadrons of mega-fighters (like 8 F-18CM's) and Light Cruiser carriers with a single squadron of heavy fighters (like 6 F101Ms) would be produced in the X2 era to opperate those fighters in a fleet defense mission.
We would not see any X2 large carriers like a XCVA or XCVB, but might still see a few small carriers to fulfill the above stated mission.
And fighters would still opperate from PDUs and would be less likely to be mega-fighters.
The proposal was for small X2 carriers and what their role might be.
