I'd like to share with you Howard Bampton's plaque on the Wall of Honor. I'm always happy to see our GC players out there in the broader SFU.

Due 4/26/13
By John Stiff (Tarkin22180) on Thursday, April 11, 2013 - 09:31 pm: Edit |
All,
Our Rob Callaway (U5 Lyran player) has passed (April 9th). I emailed his sister Cathy and asked how he was. She communicated the news. He is in a better place now.
With Respect,
John

I can't remember the quote exactly, but I'll start it and pass it on.

Darn.

I read many of Rob's posts. Although I did not know him he will be missed.
As I am in the middle of a CyberBoard Gamebox update for F&E. I have moments ago dedicated a new fleet marker to Rob.
The Lyrans will be proud to fight in the new "Callaway Battle Fleet". May they ever be victorious!

Rest your oars O fair seaman........for the seas have calmed and Heaven is in sight.

Rob had been a player in GC for over 20years. He added an excitement and color to the game that will be missed. Truly a classic and loyal player. He will be missed.
His orders and posts and emails made the game fun...a welcome respite for a GM who has to bear down in the tedium of many order processing.

I was looking to maybe play. WHat games are open positions and are there another game starting as the ones I see are mostly full
By Howard Bampton (Bampton) on Friday, April 19, 2013 - 10:24 pm: Edit |
There is just the one game running at present. John Berg (the GM) would need to chime in on the open slots for certain. I think the RYN are open.
Games don't start very often (they can run for a decade...).

Hi,
I may be interested in running the Kzintis, but I just want to be sure I know what the campaign is about - battles are resolved using SFB? Do people use SFB online to do it? If so, I'd love the run the Kzintis.
By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 03:50 pm: Edit |
Hi Pete,
SFB is more like F&E with the GMs resolving the battles the players create.
By Pete DiMitri (Petercool) on Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 05:47 pm: Edit |
Ah!
Hm, so what exactly does the player do then?
By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Sunday, April 21, 2013 - 06:36 pm: Edit |
Runs the economy, builds fleets, decides everything, including sending instructions for the battles -- basically everything except roll the dice.
Why not SFB? In one of the games, I had three fully loaded squadrons of ships, a bunch of fighter bases loaded with fighters, a starbase fully loaded with fighters, and assorted DefSats holding off a bunch of computer-operated ships intent on invading my empire. Can you imagine how long that would take to play on SFB?

Roy Steele had a stroke yesterday. He is still in the Hospital but is doing fine.

John, please keep us informed. Please also let Roy know he's in my thoughts and prayers.

Pete- To add to Jean's answer-
* spies
* R&D
* more detailed actions in some cases (i.e. the "your dedicated blah takes care of this" is often a step further down the stack)
* we do worry about refits (bases, ships, fighters, and PFs...), drone speed upgrades, etc.
* more detailed shipyards (i.e. if you want two (or four) DN slipways you can build them)
* no free fighter factors (and somewhat limited fighter production facilities)
* crew quality and legendary officers
* mine fields
* more variation in strategic speeds and movement
* empire special rules (Klingon mutiny, infighting rules for Z/R/L, economic modifiers for some empires)- these rules vary from game to game as the GM fine tunes things so those are examples of ones I've seen and may not reflect this game's rules
* simultaneous turns, GM moderated- lots of "Fog of War"
* variable limits on Economic Exhaustion (vs. F&E's 20/15 paradigm)
* you have to manage your merchant marine
There are some writeups in various Captains Logs on game aspects.
SFB would have issues with some of the legal GC forces (due to size; we typically follow S8 guidelines), and homeworld (or any fortified system) assaults would be nearly unplayable.
