BTW

Cl#2 states Al Abbot was 1983 Fleet Captain (report dated 1983) Page 48 bottom left.

Nexus 15 (1986) states the 1983 winner was Jeff Smith.

As does the official roster.

Anyone know why the contradiction?

Jeff won, Al was 2nd. Since jeff already had a gold hat (staff) and I wasn't there, TFG gave the gold hat I sent for the prize to Jeff (2nd place) which was, well, wrong. Worse, TFG told me "Oh, the gold hat? Al Abbott" which caused Jeff to get very upset.

Ugh, that sounds like an all around bummer situation. Well, at least Ken knows who (Al) was 2nd in 1983.

In 1999 patrol the runner up was Doug Mazur (I believe that is the correct last name) in the Fed.

So not really a tournament, and no one really won. But funny anyway!

Last night, four of us played (in real life! On a big map! With Megahex counters!) a hilarious game of Death Race 3000 from Module T-xxxx. The short version is that there are two big tournament barrier "pylons" in the middle of the map, making a figure-8 track. Everyone starts spread around the map (but they inevitably meet in the middle every lap), and you win by being the first one to make three (or two--next time it will be two) full laps around the track. If you go slower than speed 20, you take some damage. If you go in the wrong direction, you take some damage. Once per game, you can get a "pit stop" at your starting hex, where you get put in stasis for 8 impulses, fix 2 free boxes and get 6 shield boxes back. This is a great silly multi player scenario.

The players were:

-Andrew Sackett (WAX ESG, F, F)
-Courtenay Footman (GBS BB)
-Ben Kalb (HYD)
-Peter Bakija (GRN)

T1: We all start pretty fast and start around the track. Some drones get launched. Some drones get shot down. Peter gets hit on a flank shield by one of Sackett's F torps. Ben gets his #4 scuffed up by Courtenay's disruptors. Impulse 32, Peter is centerlined at R5 off Sackett's #4, so he shoots 2xF bolts and 4xP1s, taking the shield down exactly.

T2: Impulse 1, Sackett is hit by a couple P1's from Peter and two Hellbores from Ben, taking about 20 internals. Sackett then decides to Swing The Bitch Around. Unsurprisingly, he breaks down. And tumbles. And eventually gets hit by 4 drones that Courtenay lanuched on impulse 32 (but is saved from some damage by Tumbling giving you EM ECM!). He eventually comes to a stop mangled, but still viable, and speeds up to 5 in reverse, continuing on the race. Meanwhile, Courtenay comes up on Ben's #4 and shoot him, rolling not that hot and doing about 8 internals. Peter just avoids the scrum and continues around the track. Ben launches his fighters near the end of the turn.

T3: Sackett moves 5/10, steadily losing his remaing fluff hits to the "don't move too slow" rule. Peter just moves around a pylon. Courtenay, meanwhile, comes around a pylon into Ben's fighters and Ben HETS back at Courtenay. Ben's fighters are crippled by P1s, the ships exchange fire at R2, Ben taking about 20 in through his #1, Courtenay taking about 8 in through his #2. Ben uses a Gatling to shoot down 3 of 4 drones Courtenay launched, eating a type I on his #5 and mizias Courtenay with the other gat for 16 more in. Courtenay cagely hit's Ben's #5 with a couple suicides for 24 more internals to the Hydran. They separate around the track.

T4: Peter comes back into the middle of the map, for the home stretch of his first lap and launches an enveloped S at Courtenay. Sackett finally gets back up to speed 20 (in reverse) and starts getting around back to the middle. Ben avoids most of the other ships, while Courtenay figures out the S torp is coming for him and turns around to run away from the plasma, which eventually hits his for 6 total damage on impulse 1 of T5.

T5: Peter runs towards his starting gate, pursued by Sackett launched drones, gets to his gate mid turn, calls a Pit Stop (fixing 2 hull hits that came from moving too slow at some point and 6 shield boxes), saving himself from the drones that impact the stasis field. Courtenay and Ben move towards the middle of the map again as Sackett moves around a Pylon to get close to finishing his first lap.

T6: Sackett finally makes a lap, calling a Pit Stop and fixing some much needed power on his ship. Peter (who at this point has 0 internal damage and no down shields) speeds around a pylon and back to the middle of the map. Courtenay gets to his gate for a lap and a Pit Stop near the end of the turn, as does Ben.

T7: Seening Courtenay mostly stuck in the corner, Peter loads an enveloper and engages. Courtenay just eats the enveloper for full (taking no internals) and closes to R1. Peter launches 70 points of plasma and shoots down some drones, Courtenay blasts his #1 with 4xOL, 6xP1, 5xP3, but misses with 2 of the OL and rolls bare minimum damage on the P1s. Peter still takes about 35 internals. A couple impulses later, Courtenay is hit for 57 internals by the plasma, leaving him with a couple disruptors, 3 or 4 P1s, and about 15 power. Peter moves around the nearest pylon while Courtenay has to turn off in the wrong direction to avoid a phaser mizia. Meanwhile, Sackett and Ben just cruise towards the middle of the map.

T8: Courtenay slowly turns around and starts on a second lap. Peter cruises around and crosses into the last part of lap 2. Sackett, fueled by spite and rage, closes in on Peter. Ben follows in behind Sackett.

T9: Sackett is close to Peter at this point. The two ships finagle for weak shields, which Sackett gets with 4xP1, doing a dozen in on Peter. Sackett then just rams into a fastloaded F with his weak (but reinforced) "front" #4 shield, ending up at R1 off Peter's down #3, and launches 3 drones that will hit on the next impulse. Peter fires all bearing phasers, but manages to not destroy either of the type IV drones, which strike for 48 more internals, leaving Peter with about 2 power and a Plasma S on his ship. Peter coasts into his starting gate for a second lap on impulse 32. Ben closes in on Sackett, doing a few internals with some phasers, but missing him with an OL Hellbore. Courtenay just keeps crawling along.

At this point, we call it, as it is late. Ben's Hydran is probably in the best shape, only being slightly crippled; Sackett can still move fast enough, but probably gets mangled by Ben's fusions and Gatlings on the next turn, as all Sackett is armed with at this point is 4xP1, 2xP3, and a single drone. Peter can't move and keep his shields up anymore, but is also the only player to have completed 2 full laps (we started the game playing for 3, so no one actually won). Courtenay can maintain a steady speed of 12, but that is about it.

All in all, a hilarious and entertaining evening. A highly recommended scenario for a goofy, multi-player game.

MUDDLED DEATH!

By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, July 15, 2012 - 08:59 am: Edit

So my two games as the Gorn were:

Game 1 vs John Rigley in the WAX HgbD

This was a long game. Turn 1 through Turn 8 consisted of us flying around, avoiding significant engagement, avoiding plasma and taking care of drones with phasers and 4/14 weasels. Near the end of T2, there was a R5 phaser exchange, where we both took about a dozen damage, me on my #6, him on his #5. After that, there was mostly minor scraping of shields with sniping and light plasma damage. Some point in the middle there, John got a R8 shot with his phasers and an OL HB, but the HB missed. I got hit by an OL disruptor at R8 once. At some point, I managed to score 3 internals with phasers through his #5, hitting only a warp and hull, but he fixed the warp eventually.

At the start of T9, things look like they are going to get exciting, although John is down to 3 total drones on his ship. He takes a R6 shot with his phasers, OL Disr and OL HB, hitting and doing about a dozen internals through my #2, and turns off. I end up centerlined on his #3 at R3, so I fire 4xP1 and Bolt an S+F, hitting with both for about 26 internals, most of which were good, as I managed to roll exactly one 7 on the DAC on 26 internals, avoiding his cargo bay. I HET and run from the drones, scoring another couple internals at R15 or so with my rear phasers. John comes around for a T10 firing pass. T10, I stop, weasel his last drones, TAC around and pitch an enveloper at him, which he can't avoid as he is moving about 18 all turn. He phasers it up, eats it for about 10 more in, leaving him with a gatling and a HB as the only viable weapons on his ship (he still has 2 or 3 drone racks, but they are empty) with no repairs left, so he resigns.

Game 2 vs Dave Cheng's Hydran

Turn 1, I pitch an enveloper, he knocks half my #6 off at R8 with P1s and HBs, I cripple one fighter that is held in a tractor and gets death dragged, and damage the other, which lands. He runs from the enveloper.

T2: I chase him into the corner, he runs my enveloper to nothing after some gatling fire. Late in the turn, we are at R5, my #5 on his #6. I launch 50 plasma and hit him with 4xP1. He zings up my #5 with 3xP1. I turn off and leave, shooting his #5 with a few more P1s at R8. He can take the plasma on his untouched #4 on impulse 32 or his damaged #5 on impulse 1 of the next turn, so he gatlings it some, slips in, and takes it on his #4 for 14 internals, which hits a couple phasers, a fusion, and some power.

T3: I just run across the map all turn. Dave chases, but never gets to R8. At the end of the turn, he has to eject an OL HB.

T4: I think I pitch an enveloper out, Dave comes in some, hits me with an OL HB at R8 doing a few internals, and he turns off and runs. I get a few P1s in his down #4 at R8, doing a few more in, hitting more fusion beams and a phaser or two, and more power.

T5: I chase him. He launches his fighter, I get a few more phasers in his down #4. I hit yet another fusion, but no HB. His fighter kind of scares me off. I launch 50 plasma at him and kind of separate.

T6: He runs from the plasma, takes it for 1 internal early in the turn through his #4. I kill his fighter with P1s. He turns arounf and chases me across the map, ending the turn at R9. He shoots a standard HB, but misses.

T7: He comes in to about R5, gets me with an OL HB for 10 in or so. I HET to face him and chase him around, trying to get to his down #4 again, which I eventually do at R8 and score a dozen in. Get his last fusion, but still no HB. We end right up against the map edge at R3.

T8: I have a 24/12/8/4 speed plot and a bunch in tractor and 50 plasma ready. The Hydran stops and TACs. Impulse 3, Dave launches a couple shuttles. Impulse 4, I get to R1, try and tractor him, fail with 12 power, but launch 50 plasma anyway, as he just launched 2 shuttles. I kill both shuttles, he shoots me for 20 some odd internals. Next impulse, he takes 18 in through his reinforced #1, and resigns before I fire a couple more P1s in the hole.

Both games were very entertaining vs always good opponents.

-Dave Cheng
-John Rigley
-Andy Koch
-Doug Riggi
-Mike Rogozinski

Congrats!

So a non complete report from Council of 5, where the final game is between Steve McCann (WAX 11g1) and myself (GRN) is going to be played in the next week or so via SFBOL, as Steve's semi-final game wasn't finished till about noon today, and the guy driving me home from Council wasn't super excited about waiting around for me for another 3-4 hours. Se we arranged to play online.

The tree of 8 was, IIRC:

-Steve McCann (WAX 11g1) vs Ben Kalb (TFH)
-Ed Slusarek (THF) vs Dave Zimdars (KLI)
-William Wilson (TFH) vs Andy Vancil (HYD)
-Peter Bakija (GRN) vs Brett Johnson (ISC)

Top 4:

-Steve McCann (WAX 11g1) vs Dave Zimdars (KLI)
-Peter Bakija (GRN) vs Andy Vancil (HYD)

We had about 25 total players (not counting Sackett, who reentered at least once). A great tournament. Thanks to Ken for running it and Dave C for organizing it, as always.

Steve and I will play the final soon. I think we have played this exact match up, like, 15 times, him usually winning (including the last time we played the exact match up for the Council final 4 or 5 years back), but I did get him the last time we played it. As I decontrolled him. Twice. We'll see what happens this time!

By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, October 07, 2012 - 09:21 pm: Edit

Up till the final, my games in the Gorn were these:

Game 1 vs William Wilson's (sheap) TFH: A fast, fun, surprisingly decisive plasma game. T1, I launched a regular plasma, he launched an enveloper, we shot with phasers, we each hit with an F bolt (him on 1.32, me on 2.1). T2. I scored a single internal (a warp), and we both ran from plasma and circled around, ending at about R8. We both launched some more plasma. T3, we both did a 4/14 weasel. I had an F and a Fast F to fire. I somehow forgot that he also had a Fastload along with the S torp he had armed (I thought he just had the S torp), so we both turned in and ended up at R0 centerlined. I launched both Fs, he launched a single F. I fired 4 phasers, he fired all facing phasers. He does 4 internals, hitting 2 of my phasers. Next impulse I take 30 in from an F and 10 points of feedback. He takes about 25 in from my 2xF torps and 5 feedback. He hits 4 more of my phasers, including two that hadn't fired yet. Which was bad for me. He launches his enveloper, I fire a couple more phasers in his ship. I move out of the hex, and eat the enveloper, and a few more phasers take down my #4. I resign at this point, as I'm down to, like, 2 total phasers on my ship. If I had fired those two P1s before they got shot off, we would have been in much more similar shape, and it still would have been a game.

Game 2 vs Brett Johnson's (AgentofChange) ISC. I launch an enveloper on 1, but from too close, so his PPD gets to hit for 2 or 3 impulses in the juicy 1-4-1 range. He launches an enveloper. We both run. T2, I outrun plasma and reload, Brett does a 4/14 weasel. T3, I come in for a possible anchor, but behind my already half gone shield. His PPDs busts through it, I eat an enveloped G torp, I eat his phasers. By the time I get to R1, I'm out, like, 8 phasers, both F torps, and both my tractors (on, like, 25 total internals) due to brutal mizia DACing. Brett played a strong game and I approached on T3 stupidly.

Game 3 vs William Balch's Hydran. William was a newish/returning player. We played a fun, bloody game where we both were seriously mangled by the end when I knocked his last few weapons off with a plasma, so he resigned.

So I end up 1-2 when they make the top 8 tree, and get in on the very bottom (my buddy Ben and I were both 1-2, and were slots 7 and 8).

Round of 8: Brett's ISC again. I didn't like my last plan, so I went with a different one. T1, I launch an enveloper from further away, so the PPD is fired all in the 11-15 range. I run his enveloped G out to 11, eat it, and pursue. T2, I chase him into a corner. Near the end of the turn, it is apparent I can't catch/anchor him, so I get a R5 centerline, fire 6xP1, bolt 3 torps (hit with S/F), and do, like, a dozen in after batteries. He knocks most of my #1 down with his phasers and lobs an enveloper. I HET away, and do 4 or 5 more in with my rear phasers, ending the turn at exactly R8 with an enveloped G 2 hexes behind me. I start turn 3 feeling reckless and desperate, so I plan accordingly. I plot a drastic 26/19/9/4 plot, allocated for a second HET, put some power in tractors, recharge a bit of phaser power (assuming most of them will be dead by the time I catch him anyway) and hold my 2x suicide shuttle. Impulse 1, he fires the PPD, hitting. Impulse 2, he decides that since I'm runnng away and about to leave R8, he blasts me with his 6xP1 on my #4, doing a few internals. Impulse 3, I'm clear to HET, so I swing it around and don't break down. I eat a couple more PPD pulses in the face, taking more internals. I skunk the EPT for a few more impulses and close. He launches a rear F. I eat the enveloper for more internals. I drive right into the F torp with my down #1 for 20 more in. I get to R1, tractor him, and hit with an fastload F and a couple suicide shuttles, followed by 2 or 3 more P1s, for about 50 internals. Brett resigns. If I break down, the game is over. If Brett holds his P1s, I get killed.

Round of 4 vs Andy Vancil's Hydran. A 7 turn game of a lot of running around and sniping. T1, he hits me with 5xP1 and 2xHB, which spread around my ship due to some reinforcement. I launch an enveloper, hit him with some P1s, and chase. T2, he runs into the corner and launches fighters. I take down his #4 with an F bolt and 4xP1, launch an F at his fighters, and HET out, doing a bit more damage through his #4, but only hit the 360 P1 and 6 or 7 hull. His fighters cagely gat the F torp and one of them takes a few points of damage. T3, I run, he chases. T4, I slow down, launch an enveloper, and kill his fighters. He hits me with phasers and a couple HBs for a dozen+ in. I come about to pursue. T5, he stops, is hit by the enveloper for a few in on 1, and TACS around. I come into R5, hit him in the face with 4-5 P1s and a couple bolts, taking out his #1 and killing a HB. He speeds up to 10 and comes at me. T6, I eat another HB, but get 4 more P1s through his weak #3 (which got shot on T1), doing another dozen in. T7, he HETs at me, we end up at R1, so I tractor him, he does 30 in through my one box #5 but I hit him with a full enveloper through a down shield and two 1 box shields. I drop the tractor and fire more phasers through his down #4. At the end of the turn, he is down to a gatling and maybe a P1 as total weapons on his ship, where I have a handful of phasers and both S torps still, so he throws out the white flag.

I started out sucking, but got better and lucky when I needed it in the single elimination rounds. Now to see if Steve McCann mangles me in with WAX :-)

By David Zimdars (Zimdarsdavid) on Sunday, October 07, 2012 - 11:31 pm: Edit

You have a better memory or much better notes than I have about my 7 games. What a whirlwind. I always remember my losses most vividly. I got greedy vs. Andy and his fighters ended up at range 0. Then my plan vs. Steve was largely ill advised. Too much tractor. Had I reached the finals, I would have been a lot more practiced defeating a GRN than a WAX 11G1! :). Nice meeting everyone. Id like to than Ken and DC for a great con.

I am sorry I missed, and I sincerely hope all the new guys had fun. I hope to see you all next year!

By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Monday, October 08, 2012 - 10:56 am: Edit

Heh--yeah, that 11g1 WAX is very rough (it was worse when it was the g1g1 WAX, which got outlawed not too long after it won at Origins...). It goes 32 all the time and always has 10 reinforcement on whatever shield you happen to hit (generally from 10 in general and then batteries). And if it gets to R1, it just kills you.

By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, October 14, 2012 - 12:00 pm: Edit

The Council of 5 final between myself (GRN) and moose (WAX 11g1) is currently set for Thursday, Oct 18th, at 7:00ish.

By Peter D Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, October 18, 2012 - 07:35 pm: Edit

And...

I win Council of 5 in, like, 29 minutes. Apparently the Gorns are doing well with the Alpha Bolt this season:

Peter Bakija (GRN) over Steve McCann (WAX 11g1)

T1: I move 16 all turn with some tractor, a couple weasels, and 10 reinforcement on my #1. Steve moves 31 all turn with some reinforcement on his #3. We close in. At R13 or so, I launch both pseudoes. He turns to cross my bow (me facing A, him facing C). I slip to keep him on my #1, he slips out to run the plasma down some and launches 4 drones. I eventually turn to face him (keeping him on my reinforced #1). He hits my plasmas with 10xP3 and eats them at 11 hexes, discovering they are fake. I kill his 4 drones with 6xP3. We end the turn at about R5.

T2: I move 24 till 24 then 17 with both weasels held, a couple points in tractor, a point in a HET, and recharge most of my capacitor. Steve moves 31 all turn, recharges his capacitors, and puts some reinforcement on his #4. He turns back towards his side of the map, I chase. Impulse 16, I get R3 centerlined on his #5. He launches 5 drones. I blast him with 4 bolts and 6xP1. I hit with S, F, F for 35, roll hot on my phasers for 28, and do 63 total damage. He stops 5 with batteries, and takes 34 in, losing most of his fluff, a bunch of power, and a couple phasers. Next impulse, I HET directly away (without moving), he hits my #4 with 3xP1, I fire my last 2xP1 in the hole, roll 1, 2 for 11 more in, and mangle him. He is down 16 power, 3xP3, 3xP1, 1x drone at this point. Steve resigns.

A very quick, good game vs an always excellent opponent.

Thanks Ken for running things, Dave C for organizing things, and everyone for being cool opponents.
