1.07 bakija (GRN) over Zero_G (ZIN)
We started T6 at about 10 hexes, me behind him, him kinda between me and the NW corner of the map. I had just killed his 4xT5 drones.
T6: I move speed 14/26, rearm most of my phaser capacitor, have held S, 2 held F, 2nd turn of my other S, have a couple of weasels held, and put 5 in tractors. Wayne moves 30/15, slowing down about the same time I speed up (impulse 11 or 12 or so). Early in the turn, he kind turns back in my direction, and I just turn towards him. I speed up to 24, he slows down to 15, and is right up against the West wall. At R5, he shoots me in the face with 2 standard disruptors, 3xP1, but the disruptors both miss, and my #1 is left at about 6 boxes. I keep coming in, so he slams into the wall and stops. At R2, he TACs towards me, launches a couple medium speed drones, and shoots my #6 with a P1 and 2P3, leaving it about 6 boxes also. I don't move the next impulse and the drones do, so they come in to R1. I ID one of them, but miss the other one, and kill the type I with a P1 in the direction I want go the next impulse. The next impulse, I slip into R1 centerline, and he TACs away again, and I announce a tractor attempt. We get up to 9 (I have 10 possible power for tractors), he fights that, I get nervous, but then when I go up to 10, I get him. I launch S+F+F. He launches a couple drones. I ID his previous drone and kill it with a P1 (it is a I), and kill the other two with a couple P3's each. Next impulse, no one moves, and I hit his #6 with 70 plasma, doing 40 in. I drop the tractor and follow up the plasma with 3xP1 for another 16 in. Wayne surrenders.
A good, solid game! If Wayne hadn't TACed twice as I was coming in, he would have beat my tractor, and I would have been in a rough spot.

That was a good game Peter (and a good write up of the battle).

Thanks, Wayne! You too! That was a fun game!

So far, six of the eight first round games have concluded. In an odd pattern, the game at the bottom of the top of tree, and the game at the top of the bottom of the tree are the ones remaining unresolved.
So far, the Klingons are riding to victory have won in all three of the first round matches they were in. Also moving forward (so far) are two of the four Gorns, and one of the two WYN Black Sharks.
It is, however, a sad day for the Hydrans as both their ships went down, along with their lone Kzinti ally (well ... the Hydrans did intervene in the war on the Kzinti's side).
The Feds, Andromedans, and the WYN Ax are still in the game (along with the remaining Gorn) as we await the outcomes of the final two first round games.
Good luck to all the captains.

2.4 bakija (GRN) over Tartan_Army (KLI)
T1: I move 17/24 with an enveloper, hold a weasel, have 5 reinforcement that never comes up. Klingon moves 31/24/27 with a single overload. He just plows at me, at about R13, I pitch the enveloper, he immediately turns off towards the West wall. He launches 2 medium speed drones late. We end at about 12 hexes range, my plasma a few hexes away.
T2: I move 24 all turn, hold the weasel, start rearming my plasma tube, have a few points in tractors and a few in HET. Klingon moves 27/19. He runs the plasma to the West wall, eating it for 2 on its last move, after he turns South. I just move in, using a battery to speed up to 25 for the rest of the turn as I close in, to get in front of his 2 medium drones. I get inside R8, and he launches a shuttle and 2 more medium drones. We get close to the South-West corner of the map, he slows to 19, and turns out of the corner (direction C); I use 3P3s over 2 impulses (and labs) to identify and kill the 2 drones in front of me (both I). I launch S+F at him, turn in, get R4 centerline on his #5 shield. I fire bolt F and 6P1, roll well on phasers, bolt hits, do 33 damage. I find 10 reinforcement, leaving his shield at 1 box. I tractor his shuttle on the map (which was just a decoy, but killing a shuttle for 2 tractor power is always a good plan), HET away, get my last P1 on his 1 box shield at R6, roll a 3 for 3 damage, do 2 internals (hull, warp). He turns into the wall, stops (taking 5 on the nose), weasels the plasma, drops tracking on his 2 drones on the map, and avoids collateral damage. He immediately TACs back in my direction and speeds up to 10. I just fly off. We end at about R12.
T3: I move 12/24 for 14 moves, reload all my stuff and refill batteries and start a second weasel; Klingon goes 10/9/10/19. He just comes out of the corner, launching his SP which opens late in the turn. Near the end of the turn, he fires 4 standards at my #3, hits with 1 for 3 damage. We end at about R14. He gets 2 boxes back on his #5.
T4: I move 16/24 for 18 moves, arm plasma B as an enveloper, hold both weasels. Klingon moves 19/20. I turn in his direction, launch the enveloper at about 11 hexes, and turn off to evade the ship and drones. He comes in, shoots up the enveloper with most of his phasers, knocking 21 off of it, and it hits him for 39 spread around his ship. He shows 7 reinforcement on his 2 box #5, leaving it up at 2, but takes 6 or 7 on all the rest of his shields. He turns in, I turn out, but he and the drones close in. Late in the turn I end up at R8 centerlined on his #1, fire 6xP1s, knock most of his #1 off (it took 5 from the wall, 6 from the enveloper, and then 6P1s), and Brendan calls it here, feeling he is too far behind to catch up.
A good, short game vs an always fun opponent.

(Please ignore me being in the final round; I think Brendan and I accidentally both reported the game at about the same time; I sent an e-mail to Paul to fix it).

Brendan's first mistake was eating 2 from that first torp....

Andromedan Paul Franz (Krait TCC) over AdmiralDZZI Dave Zimdars (Gorn). Paul wins on turn 6 when he HETs into me to move on my weak shield #1. I'm looking at 30 or so internals from his TRL and P2s. He had about 11 in on his from PAs and I'd shot 2 P2 and P3s I try a 2nd HET to bring a strong shield but breakdown. Earlier in the game I missed on alpha shot with 3 bolts and did only about 8 phasers on a rear PA that was 60% full. So kind of. bad luck. Even so, I don't think I played aggressively enough. Note I had a problem reporting my loss, so I emailed Paul and SPP. Thanks for the game Paul!

Yikes!
Which Andro is the Andro right now? 3TRL, 6P1, 4 batteries?
And the tree looks fine (well, except that I'm still accidentally advanced to the final :-); I think the tree is just glitching, and when you make a report, it often gives you an error message, but reports anyway.

Romwe(FED) over Droid(WAX).
Andy had maneuvered beautifully, and used his drones to push me around the first 2 turns. He ended up behind me on turn 2, and shot up my #4 with phasers and an OL hellbore. Did 3 in(all hull), after a couple points of reinforcement. We ended the turn about 6 hexes apart with him behind me, and 5 drones between us. Fortunately for me, all his fire was impulse 26 or later.
Turn 3, I wasn't going to be able to move fast enough to shake him, so I went with the hail mary. Plotted 26 through i5, then slowed as fast as I could, for 10 moves. On impulse 2, I het back towards him, angled slightly away from the drones. I use 3p3's to shoot a couple drones that I couldn't avoid. On impulse 5, announce ED, and shoot him with 4 OL's and 5P1's at range 4. Then I got lucky, and hit with all 4 photons. He takes 49 in, after reinforcing with batteries. On impulse 7, I stop, and launch a weasel. He turns in and flies over me, while his drones hit my weasel, but doesn't fire. I tac on impulse 11 to keep him off my down shield. He moves a few more times, then decides to concede.

Wow. WAX usually kills the Fed. Combination of skill and luck. Well done.
By Andy Koch (Droid) on Thursday, April 30, 2020 - 01:54 pm: Edit |
Ted, but Brian usually kills Andy. So....
If I had fired 2.25 he would have taken 4 p-1s on his downed 4 on 3.1. Then he would have been in a pickle instead of me being in a pickle.
Although, he only takes 8 in from that, so unless I get a torp it probably doesn't change much. So his pickle would have been smaller than the pickle I ended up in.
There's a joke in there somewhere....

I feel, you Andy. Peter Bakija is my SFB bane. I've beaten Paul Scott a couple of times, I've beaten Frank Gilson several times, I've beaten Tom Carroll at least once, but I have never beaten Peter Bakija...
Go figure.

Even I can beat Bakija on the odd occasion
By Andy Koch (Droid) on Thursday, April 30, 2020 - 03:56 pm: Edit |
To be fair, Brian had his HET / decal planned very well and hitting with 4 at r4 is not that remarkably lucky .
I should have been better prepared for it as it was his only real option to avoid getting tortured through his downed shield .
