Victory in Power - Campaign for SFB

Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Battles: Player Campaigns: Victory in Power - Campaign for SFB

Victory in Power is a SFB campaign I've been working on for the last 6 months. It is inspired by both Federation and Empire and the Admiral's Game. The idea is to keep record keeping manageable and combat the focus, while still maintaining a rich strategic feel.

ViP is designed to explore the full richness of the SFU, from duels to fleet battles, from lone wolf raids to base assaults, from a Warbird to an KEX. Campaign maps are very simple, vaguely relating to the original Admirals' game, but the tactical and strategic play is nevertheless rich.

The campaign is player moderated, and most aspects of the game are either public knowledge, or secretly assigned and simultaneously revealed. Thus, there is no need for a moderator.

All players follow the same sequence of play at the same time, so that when everyone gets to combat everyone is fighting (potentially). This keeps the campaign moving along. Players can arrange themselves in teams to further increase time efficiency. If desired for any reason, the F&E statistical combat system can be used to quickly resolve specified combats to keep the campaign fast-paced.

I am not ready to start a ViP campaign, as I wish the campaign to be subject to peer review before starting anything.

If you are interested, here is a link to view the campaign rules.

Ted,

You've done really nice work here. It's great that the system doesn't actually need a moderator. You've draw some really good elements of F&E and combined your own stuff to make it workable for playing SFB. I applaud your work.

I will try to read more carefully and see if there are parts that seem unclear, but it's a very strong start.

Peter,

Thank you! You're a long-timer, I know, so your praise means a lot to me.

Having written at least a dozen campaigns over the decades, and having run many of them, and played in more, campaigns have a tendency to break down (lack of pace, too much quagmire in tracking logistics or movement, too many battles are too large, etc.). I'm trying to prevent that from happening, while still providing for the full richness of the SFB universe.

Meaning, yeah, there is at least one SB assault to win the campaign, but there's lots of duels and squadron sized actions as well. The option for F&E statistical combat can be used for campaign players who want to hurry things along or avoid the really large battles.

But I know people (me, at least) who *like* the occasional large scale scenario (SB assault with two fleets), so I wanted that to be a possibility.

Anyway I WELCOME comments, ideas, pointing out errors, etc. I won't necessarily adopt everything (after all, too many cooks in the kitchen isn't good), but I want this campaign to become popular if I can.

Nicely done, though a couple of minor points -

DefSats are usually in orbit around planets, not bases ...

As for the map setup (60x60), would using 4 SFB maps (84x60) been that hard (yea, yea, just don't go beyond the 18xx hexrow on the back maps)?

Some 'he'/'the' typos but didn't mark it and forgot where they were ... (they were close together and were probably cut & paste) ...

Stewart,

Thank you kindly for your comments, they are much appreciated.

I will reconsider/change the DefSats.

As for the maps, most of my opponents have been on SFBOL, where 60x60 maps seem to be used a lot. I will definitely look at using more standard SFB maps, at least as an alternative.

I'll scour for typos on the next pass-through.

This looks pretty solid. A lot of work. A couple of nitpicks:

1) You don't explain specialised slipways.
2) Inconsistency of BPV gained from spending a strategic point (125 or 75?)
3) Raids. If the modified roll is less than 1, then what?
4) A successful garrison raid means the defender loses control of the sector and gains no income. What does a successful base raid achieve?
5) Pinning is...confusing

Jim,

THANKS for your input! I will address these comments.
