Congrats to Andy, and also Congrats to Seth for making it to the finals in a Fed.
I wanna see details! And now Andy needs to write a Victory article. And now we have 4 players for a Championship! Woo!

Congratulations, Andy.
I feel better about that loss now, losing to the king.

Graham I was just got lucky you dropped your weasels and then I had 3 Feds. I am merely a prince.
Final went something like this:
T1 I went speed 31/23 to goad the Fed into his corner, and then slow some to allow the drones to array in their splendor somewhere in front of me. This usually draws a weasel and allows me to get an overrun. It worked pretty well against the other Feds...but this tricksy Fed went 16 with a SC to 31 on 1.17, and continued to close. The Fed got to r4 oblique, and I fired the disruptor I was about to lose. The Fed took his shot (3 OL 16; 1 standard, 6 p-1s) which resulted in 56 to me after 2 Ols hit. This resulted in 17 in after 9 reinforcement on my #2. I lost several power but only a p-3 and the disr for weapons.
THe next impulse I was able to turn and eventually get a r2 shot (4 p-1, 2 p-3 and a standard HB) on his #3 which resulted in volleys of 3 and 12 in, netting a photon and a couple phasers and power. The Fed eventually got my down #2 with 2 more phaser 3s, 5 more in... nothing of import.
As an aside, Seth used his drone rack like a champ. He hit with 3/4 ADD and killed 2 additional drones with his drones on the next couple turns..
T2 We kept speed up and circled each other. He killed more drones. I repaired my disr, he repaired his p-3.
T3 I had visions of getting hit in the rear so I actually allocated an HET and OLed the HB just out of desperation. However, his starting speed was 24, and his speed was pretty high T2.. so his photons weren't oled, then 3.1 he fired 4 range 4 p-1s at my #5 doing 16 points. So I held off swinging the bi0tch around.
He droned/shot/ tracced drones.. and we flew apart. I got back around eventually, and the Fed just made a b line for the opposite corner. After the game it was revealed he 0 energy in photons on Turns 2 and 3. So all made sense.. At the end of the turn, I repaired a p-3 and discharged the OL HB. We were maybe 25-28 hexes apart to start T4, both facing C.
T4 I plotted 24 all turn, Seth went 14. I closed, Seth turned to A then to F late in the turn. 4.28 I launched 5 drones. We ended r-8-10 ish.
T5 I plotted 17/23/17, finished the HB as a standard, and put 7 reinforcement on the #1. The Fed stopped to tac and weasel with 10 tractor. The drones got out in front of me, and Seth weaseled them early so his weasel moved twice.
He brought FC back to be up effective 5.16. I got to R1 at the same moment his FC came up. I launched 3 drones and we exchanged fire. He blasted with 3 OL 16 photons, and 2 phaser 1s, netting him 31 in after reinforcement. I fired 6 p-3s, 4 p-1s, a standard disr (2 Batts) and on OL HB (3 batts). This netted volleys of 28 and 15, which killed the Fed's shuttle bays. This effectively ended the game Impulse 17 i slipped a fresh shield and launched 2 heavies. Seth fired at them but couldn't kill them, and was going going to eat them though a weak shield on 5.18.
I thought I was ruined on T3, but Seth chose to keep his speed and not arm the photons, and the crops were saved. Very well played Seth.
Feels good to win one finally.

Yaa!
I mean, it would have been good if Seth won too, and I'd be making the same "Yaa!", but this is good too :-)

I mean, don't get me wrong.. we love Seth. But Yaa!

I had been thoroughly outplayed for a couple of turns when I forgot to power the weasel Andy; well deserved. You can't guess wrong about an opponent's EA and plan as often as I did in that game and expect to survive. I spent the whole game playing against a Hellbore that you never overloaded and took as damage on like the 2nd drone hit.
Congratulations.
I'll look back at the reports, but did any of the Feds insist on R2 or better against your WAX?
Looking forward to next time.

Seth shot me at R-1 but his 12 feedback tipped the scales in my favor....
By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Monday, November 09, 2020 - 07:31 pm: Edit |
An opponent of mine, when I was flying Fed, downed my front shield. When I turned away from him to cover it, he dove for my dark side (where the photons did not bear).
The next words out if mouth were "I cannot believe you are doing this, I cannot believe you are doing this" as I burned my high energy turn to point the nose of my ship directed at him at Range 1.
I knew what I had (including the phasers) so I merely responded "I have four fully overloaded photon torpedoes: you're dead".
Sure, he survived the photons and the phasers (and at my suggestion he launched a shuttle which I had to shoot since I had no way of being certain it was not a suicide shuttle). But a few turns later he was finished.
I have known only one player who was consistently good with photon torpedoes outside of Range 1 (I rarely hit outside of Range 1, at least the misses were so devastating they register more in my mind, and this is even though I have won quite a few battles with single or multiple Federation ships so there mush have been times the torpedoes hit). But back at Fort Benning there was one player. He was the WORST at maneuvering. But he was also truly "Legendary" with photon dice.
Range 8, normally a 1/2 chance of hit. But the Opponent has six ECM, but he has six ECCM, but the opponent is under erratic maneuvers. You only have a 1/6th chance of any given photon hitting. Do you want to close the range?
No.
Your firing now? Okay,. Do you want to try a narrow salvo? You still have only a 1/6th chance of hitting, but if you hit all four hit.
No, I will roll them separately..
Okay, four dice, only ones hit. Roll them:
1, 1, 1, 1.
You know, if he had only ever done that once. but just sitting here I can recall of the top of my head four times he did that. And I know he was not cheating in any way because he was using MY casino dice (and I was not the only one he did it).
But the thing is, even with those photon rolls, he tended in the end to lose to his opponents who wold just not give up or be disheartened by his photon rolls.

What's the BPV cost for a Legendary Roller?
By Scott Moellmer (Goofy) on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 - 09:43 am: Edit |
===
The wife got me a button some time ago saying Great Strategist, Lousy Dice roller, and in the last part at least, truer words were never spoken.
One Colo tourney I was playing the finals, i forget which ship, but missing with almost every torp shot. I lost, and very frustrated, grabbed the dice with vague intent of tossing them across the crowded room. I hesitated, and the Judge said "Go ahead, you'll miss..."
