The last turn plot was 20/3, 26/11, 13/19, 6/rest. Total of 13 moves. I was tractored most of the last turn so had some slower pseudo speeds too.

Game 3.2 Madjack WBS (bb) vs Spartan RKR

Friday 19:00 EST

By Dana Madsen (Madman) on Monday, February 15, 2021 - 10:48 pm: Edit

Madman (THN) or Kingzilla (TFH)

Seth played it out after the tumbling. He started with 7 internals from T1, he took 20 internals plus 5 warp from the breakdown/tractor/tumbling. I then took 27 from plasma after shooting some phasers and turning into it on my #2. So we were 32 to 27 T2 I watched him tumble and I manoeuvred to end the turn at range 2 on our 6/1 shield boundary.

T3 I hit with all 3 disr and 5ph-1. We killed a bunch of shuttles on each other. I killed 3 and he killed 2. Seth started going backwards with a down #6 and #2. At this point I had a pretty good power advantage 35 power or so to 23 but Seth still had 3 torps.

T4 I shot some disr and hit with 2 ovld's on his #1 doing 12. Saved my phaser power as we were at range 6-8.

T5 He launched a plasma early at range 7(?) to me, I thought it might be a pseudo and almost ignored it but I put a web up to catch it. We were on the same hex line. I was going 15 with 3 ovlds and he was going -14 or so in reverse.
so I let the plasma get stuck right in front of me. Then I slipped to the side, passed it and slipped back into the web. When it had moved 8 hexes it had to chase me into the next line of web. At range 6 he launched 60 plasma as I flew past the end of my web. I had no battery and no het planned so I emerg decel, got 1 hex closer to range 5 and shot him with ovlds and phasers on the 18 pt #1. Did another 17 or so internals at that point. Then I popped the weasel. Turns out the first launch was real as one of the torps in the 60 stack was a pseudo. Seth bolted an F and shot his last ph-1 at me.

T7 I started going 0 and couldn't speed up until imp 7. But Seth couldn't get out of the corner and only had 19 power at this point. He tried to sneak out but I got to range 2 on him and hit his #5 shield for another 23 internals which got everything but an Emer and got the first excess damage.

So turns out I'm not a good gambler, I had enough battery power to fight the tractor T2 (just). Seth allocated 7 and had 5 in his battery. I allocated 1 and had 5 batts. So I could have got away unscathed. What I didn't know T1 is that he used batteries for his reinforcement. I thought it might have been general. If he'd had full batteries then he could have had more tractor energy then I could fight.

Also, I got real lucky with his failed breakdown to make up for a mistake T1. I started the game with web passage off and cast a 5 hex, Str 10 web T1. I wanted to stick myself in the web and wait to see which way he and his plasma went. I decided that was more important than trying to catch him in str 12 web. But on imp 32 I was going to het away from him, had the het paid for. On imp 31 I forgot to change my web status and I couldn't move. If I'd het'd away then he couldn't have got to range 2 and would have had a real tough time getting a tractor off.

Again, I got lucky that Seth got greedy and rolled a 6 when he het'd. He didn't need to het to get the win. That's 2 wins in a row that luck has been on my side. I can't say it's my playing here. I've just been good enough not to make a big mistake after I got lucky.

Yow. So Seth broke down on T2, and kept fighting and made a game of it till T7?

I salute you, sir! I don't think I have ever seen a game continue after someone broke down.

By Seth Shimansky (Kingzila) on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 - 12:44 pm: Edit

When I broke down I knew I had no chance of winning but more interested how the breakdown work but it seems the tumble was the real nasty part from the trac. There where a few impluses turn 6 that I had a glimmer of hope and was sweating madnan. He killed that like not getting presents from Santa as a kid. All & All I enjoyed the game and had fun. Madman was fun to play with.

Update on Zombie MadJack (Shark) versus Spartan (KR)

We have played 13 turns. Both of us have lots of shield damage and internals. KR has 31 internals and 56 shield boxes remaining. Shark has 11 internals and 83 shield boxes and about to lose 20 more. We will probably not be able to pick it back up until the weekend due to huge time zone problems.

I have watched a little of this encounter and it looks like a classic! Well played to both of you.

There was a mighty duel. It ranged all over. They were both masters.

T1

Dana loaded 3 overloads and made a total of 21 moves using a 16/25/26 speed plot. He had a couple in tractor and 1 in HET. I loaded up 4 standards, 2 suicides, put 8 on shield 1, and went 16 all turn. My plan was to kind of corner dodge and get some drones out on the board between us before t2. I also hoped he would use the caster to put some web on the board t1 so he would have to charge it turn 2.

Everything mostly went according to plan until the end. He moved down the board and I turn right almost immediately. Late in the turn I turned to direction A and fired standards and hit with 2. He got close enough to my drones to shoot them with his overloads. He fired 3 and killed 2 drones on a 1-2 to hit. I did not see that coming and wasn’t happy about it, plan sort of thwarted. He did use the caster on imp 31 to put 4 hexes of 12 strength web on the board, closer to me then him. We ended the turn at range 10 I think.

T2

Dana loaded 3 overloads, re-loaded the caster with 5 power, put 2 in tractor, and made a total of 17 moves. His plot was 1-6=16, 7-14=21, 15-22=15, 23-end= 10. I loaded 4 overloads, hold 2 suicides, 1 in HET, and make 15 moves using a 14/13/14 plot. The T1 web was set up in such a way as I could slip a little and still get around it regardless to which direction Dana chose. In other words, once he committed to a side of the web to pass on I would be able to use that side as well and not get stuck in the web. There would be no free shot on me. We got into firing position at range 4. The situation was that we would then move to range 2. My biggest concern fighting ships like the Gorn, Lyran, and the Neo-Tholian is the off-side phasers. The Shark is very hard to beat if it never loses phaser 1’s and so I will do almost anything to make sure there is no extra volley’s killing phasers. I was thinking he might fire at range 4 then HET away in order to shoot the off-side phasers inside as extra internals. I decided to launch a drone and fire at range 4 and he did not. I hit with 3 of 4 overloads and 5,5,6,6,6,1 with phasers for a total of 41. He took 2 phasers, disruptor, trac, 2 warp, other fluff. Ok so great, I am thinking we are going to move to range 2 and I am going to fire 5 p-3 in the hole I just made. The next impulse he decides to HET into my path to stop those p3 internals. I was a little surprised by that move as I still had t1 drones on the board and 5 more seekers I could launch. He holds fire and gets straight ahead of me range 2. I launched a couple manned shuttles here to encourage him to not get range 1. I also launch drones in here. His HET and speed made it so my drones would catch him if he did nothing about them. He had already used a tractor to grab 1 of my t1 drones and the other one was destroyed so it would have to be phasers. He did not fire much at me really. He fired the fist, the overloads (hitting with everything) and just 2 p1’s but rolled 1-2 with them range 2. His grand total was 47. I used 1 battery to stop damage and took 16 internals. 1 phaser, 3 power, 1 disruptor, no drone racks. Impulse 12 and he still has a ton of firepower so I have to HET, can’t let him hit more phasers. The rest of the turn is spent with him killing all the drones on the map. I end up shooting 4 p-3’s rolling 3,4,5,6 and doing 10 to his #6. We end turn with him in the south west corner direction C near the bottom of the map. I am about 6 hexes behind him direction F and up the map up. My #4 to his #4.

Overall I am down a few internals at this point but have damaged all of his forward shields. I used both the t-4’s this turn and he lost a shuttle he launched. I also know from power tracking he does not have any shuttles ready for a mission. The crucial part of this turn I think was his speed plot. Going speed 10 at the end meant he wasn’t going to get far.

T3-

Ok so I do some math on his ship. I figure he will charge the caster, batteries, phasers, and make about 15 moves. Really that is about all he can do. His front shield 6 already has 10 damage and I think I can get close enough to probably shoot it. He does about what I think – he makes 15 moves, puts 4 in the caster, 6.5 in phasers, 5 in batteries, and also puts 4 in damage control for shield 2. I put 6 in phasers, 5 in batts, hold 2 suicides, and make 18 moves. I turn direction A and start slipping towards the right map edge. He turns direction A and hugs the map edge. I keep slipping in and getting closer. Imp 27 he speeds up to 20 his max speed but I go to 26 using batteries. He stays direction A all the way till impulse 32. I turn direction B but I am out of his FA. He is on my #2 and I am on the 20 point 6. Impulse 32 I launch 3 drones and the 2 suicides thinking he probably isn’t moving T4. I also fire 6 p1 and roll 2, 5, 2, 3, 4, 5. Decent roll. It adds up to 26. He uses 4 batteries and takes 2 internals including a disruptor (lucky shot). He fires the snare but does not fire anything else. End of turn he repairs a P-3 and I repair a disruptor.

T4-

One thing is certain. I am shooting 4 overloads into a down shield impulse 1 unless he weasels. I knew he didn’t have one going into turn 3 but he could have charged 1. I load 4 overloads, fully charge phasers, reload a couple batteries. I plan 2 tacs and speed up to speed 3 impulse 11. I expect him to kind of sit still and deal with a bunch of seeking weapons while I move to range 1. He has other ideas.

He arms 1 overload, tops of the caster, charges batteries, allocates a 2nd HET (!), puts 4 in tractor, 1 in general, and makes 14 moves. He moves 24 at first then slows to 15, then 10 late in the turn. Impulse 1, I fire the overloads and hit with 3 for 24. He blocks 3 with batteries + general for 21 internals. Snare, another disruptor (he has 1 left), 3 phasers, 4 power, a battery, other stuff. He moves for a few impulses but it still looks like he can’t get me into FA. He gets to range 2 and I don’t think he is getting closer so I fire 4 P3 into his shield 5 (2,3,3,6) at range 2 for 13. He tractors one of my suicide shuttles. I am still waiting for my p-1s to cycle and after shooting shield 5 there with P3’s I think I am getting more internals with P-1’s. Again back to his other ideas. I have tac’d twice before impulse 8 to keep him off my #1. He gets in position and HET again making the roll and get on my down #1. I still have p1’s coming up and a lot of seeking weapons he has to deal with somehow but can’t tac. I decide to try to tractor him and succeed but only barely. He starts plinking me with phasers and the disruptor for about 30 internals altogether. He missed the web fist, the only heavy weapon miss he had all game. He gets a couple p1’s, 2 FX P3’s, 2 drone racks, power, other stuff. No tractors. My phasers cycle and I tac again. His 2 point 6 is facing me so I start plinking him back. I purposely fire 2 p1 on an impulse right before speed 6 shuttles move hoping to get his remaining tractor, which I do. He is going to take another 18 inside next impulse. He looks at it and decides the game is over.

Summary- overall he rolled almost exactly average with everything he fired. I think he rolled better shooting me then shooting at drones. That may have hurt him in the end as he had to expend a little more firepower on them then me. My dice were as usual not very good. On 36 rolls 17 were 5-6. Only two 1’s on 36 rolls. He was definitely hurt by lucky internals with me seemingly able to target disruptors at will. I think what made the most difference were his use of the caster turn 1 (forcing him to recharge it) and then slowing to speed 10 at the end of turn 2. I got to dictate shield facings t3 because of that slow speed there. So keep your speed up early on kids!! Great Game Dana, very fun to play with.

Yaa! Thanks SPP!

In Consultation with Lenna, Jean, and SVC, it has been decided that Sapphire Star VIII will not begin solicitation for players until 1 May 21. This is both to give Leanna a Break to handle Tax Season and to allow the players to take a beak from the tournament to just play a game of SFB Online.
