Hello Greg_T,

I've sent some email, I'm in Japan (aka the future) so timezones can be a challenge. Look forward to our game!

Regards,
Spartan

1.4 bakija (VUD) vs MadJack (ZIN)

Friday, 3/11, 7:00 pm ET.

I can't imagine this will go well for the Vudar...

Tried to report a loss, but the reporting form will only let you choose the last tournament, not this one.

By Andy Koch (Droid) on Wednesday, March 09, 2022 - 09:54 am: Edit

Sorry Steve. We are mostly analog with this one.

DO you want to join the replacement queue?

No thanks Andy, my game showed me that I need some practice to get back in form before playing in a tournament again :)

Stephen McCann (Moose) I thought you played great. I enjoyed our game for a few reasons but one of them is that I have not played you much and had no idea what to expect. It gave some excitement to the game. I had just hit you with 50 points of plasma and I was still scared of getting killed up till the last impulse of the game.

SummaryJudgment over BS in three turns.

On Turn 1, I allocated an EPT (B), held the rest, and went slow-fast with the acceleration very late and to 29 (just in case he went 26 so I could have preferential movement at EOT). I armed one WW and one SS. I started straight up the board, turning left before mid turn in order to get in front of the Klingon and in position to potentially fire and slip out to avoid range 8 without turning again. Bille launched a 6-drone scatterpack and came straight up the board, accelerating to 26 (19 total moves) and turning on i23 to direction C after my range 13, impulse 22 EPT launch.

I slipped out to get out of FA and then turned back in to pursue. After some calculation, Bill turned back in, got R8 for an overload shot on 1.31 (36 total damage with all 4 disruptors and mediocre phaser dice, against 8 rein of which 5 was batteries), and ended at R1 to the EPT (taking it on 2.1 after 11 impulses.) On 1.32 I shot down 2 scatterpack drones (he had spread them out in 3 stacks of 2) leaving four between us. (I got the number I needed to shoot drones every time there was an opportunity to not do so this game; 2 drones died to 2 p3 each at R2 and 2 to 1 p3 each at R1. Friendly dice. I rammed the last 2 scatterpack drones and autokilled the heavies.)

I felt like I lost turn 1, but 44 damage isn't bad even if I lost most of my (reinforced) #2 in the process.

So in EA of turn 2, everything turned in my favor although neither of us knew it until after speeds were revealed. We were at R6, Klingon #1 to Gorn weakened #2. I plotted 26/13, with 5 allocated tractor and no reinforcement, planning to get in and land plasma under the beam, presuming that with disruptors to power 5 might well be enough.

Bill (based on our discussion after) thought that if he didn't fight, he'd take a bolt shot anyway and lose any good opportunity to do more than shield damage. So he allocated slow-fast and planned to come in for an exchange, screened by his drones.

On 2i2, I turn in to get off my #2 and approach with my armed A torpedo. I launch a pseudo "A" Torpedo which Bill didn't get fooled by at all.

So on i5 of T2, having shot two drones and accepted two more on my #1 for 24, I got to range 1 before disruptors cycled, #5 to #5, attached a tractor beam, and traded 50 points of plasma (Torpedo D was not in arc) with 2 fast (presumably heavy) drones and a dummy SS. Thinking that I'd rather take 18 than 24, I autokilled the heavies with my last four phasers available (the rest wouldn't cycle until 2.8) and was simply lucky not to take the SS (as it wasn't armed).

Bill took 29 in from the plasma, plus 18 from a Speed 5 SS launched on i6. He managed to avoid the D torpedo (I forgot I couldn't fire it out the #4, so it had to HET and that gave him an impulse to move), which spun around his ship and impacted his #2 after we both moved. Because he wasn't turn eligible, I got four separate one-phaser shots in the hole with my remaining phasers.

All this was pretty much sheer luck. I thought at one point the tractor on i5 was a mistake (because of the i5 Range 1 SS launch into insufficient phasers). But it obviously worked out.

By i1 of turn 3, the Klingon had lost 19 power, most of the phasers, the whole shuttle bay, 3 disruptors, and the Gorn had lots of shield damage but no internals.

After his range 3 FA turn 3i1 shot, Bill conceded.

None of the maneuvers broke his way this game, and if I hadn't allocated for the anchor on T2 the Klingon probably shoots me a lot and continues to wear down my plasma availability and shields.

Bill was incredibly gracious (and patient with me moving my plasma when I meant to move my ship a few times) and I very much appreciated the opportunity to play this game.

Graham, well done. While games are often decided while players make guesses in EA, like this one, BS is a world champion - so luck or no, well done.

One interesting moment was the last two scatterpack drones on i3 of turn 2. At the beginning of the turn, I thought "Self, you should really consider just taking those if they aren't on the shield that the Klingon ship is." And moved on.

Then on i3 I realized that I had gone to i3 without thinking about it again and pretty much rammed them by force (they were on my #1, not the #6 the Klingon was on or the #5 it would be on when we arrived at Range 1).

If I had shot them at R2, though, I get hit by two heavy drones two impulses later, so this was the right thing to do anyway even though I never went back and worked it out. As it was, I had the four phasers I needed on i5, and then the rest cycling around impulse 8.

If I don't butcher the Klingon with plasma, then I pay for it later, but if you have them in a beam then hopefully there won't be a "later".

"Sir???"

"You heard me correctly, Helmsman! I said to RAM those two incoming Drones with our Forward Shield!!!"

1.4 Madjack (ZIN) over bakija (VUD)

T1: I move 16/26 for 19 moves, overload all 4 ICs for 12 total power, have a bit of reinforcement on my #6, hold a weasel. ZIN moves 16 all turn. He corner dodges and launches 4 drones spread all over the place and the SP late. On impulse 32, we are at something like 20 hexes, he fires 4 standard disruptors, hits with all of them for 8 damage, sees 4 reinforcement, I take 4 on my #6.

T2: I move 16/26/14 for 22 moves or so, hold 4xOL, have a weasel, have 3 or 4 power in tractors. ZIN moves 16/27 something? The SP opens, launching 3 medium and 3 fast drones. He closes a bit in a cloud of drones. It is apparent I'm not going to accomplish anything useful by flying at him through the drones, so I turn off and start killing drones. I shoot a couple, get 4 with the IPG, and the rest are far enough away that I don't need to deal with them this turn. We end the turn at R9, me facing away from the ZIN, with 5 drones on the map (4 were there, he launched a single fast drone late).

T3: I'm near the map edge, and don't have a ton of room to move. And am facing away. And still only have 1 weasel armed. I plot 26/13/6/4 with a HET, put 3 in tractors, plan on HETing at him, skidding to a halt, and him not having more than 3 in tractors this turn. ZIN starts the turn moving speed 29. Impulse 2, I HET directly at him. We close a bit. I declare decel. We get to R2 a couple impulses before I can weasel (due to the post HET restriction). I can avoid drone death at this point, assuming I don't get tractored. He fires a few phasers at my #1. I shoot with 4xOL IC and 6xP1. One of the ICs misses (which isn't that unlikely on 9's), I do 65 damage total to his #6, do 35 internals, which isn't enough to be worth any of this. ZIN turns into R1 with his up #2, tractors me, beats my 8 negative and kills me. He had plotted speed 29/14 for 19 moves and had 8 in tractor.

I'm not really sure what the Vudar can possibly do against a competently flown ZIN. If the Vudar can get to R5, shoot with all the guns, and then HET away, it'll do fine. But the ZIN can avoid this pretty easily.

You can’t lose in the Vudar if you don’t play the Vudar?

Are you in for replacement???

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Saturday, March 12, 2022 - 07:53 pm: Edit

Sure. I'll be in as an alternate if you need one.

Nothing better than getting killed in the Vidar twice!

Report page has been updated to add the Sapphire Star 10 tournament.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, March 13, 2022 - 10:52 pm: Edit

3 Kzi
2 Kli
1 WBS (bb)
2 Gorn
2 RKR
1 RKE
1 Orion
1 ATC
1 Vud
1 Hyd
1 WAX

Almost half the field is drone ships. Of 5 plasma boats, none of them are Firehawks. No Feds, only the Vudar and Hydran (and maybe the Orion?) to represent Team Rolling Dice.

Interesting tournament.
