Emergency Substitute Starbase

Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Battles: SFB Proposals Board: New Ships: R10: ANDROMEDAN PROPOSALS: Emergency Substitute Starbase
By Jeffrey Noel Cochran (Jncochran) on Sunday, May 01, 2022 - 10:04 am: Edit

Background: During Operation Unity, the Galactic Powers discovered the Andromedans used a single Starbase to link to their home galaxy. With incomplete knowledge of Andromedan technology, there were concerns the Andromedans would try improvising another starbase out of smaller units.
This represents the best guess at what such a base might be like.

Unit:
Conjectural, YIS Operation Unity

Take 1 core module.
Attach 3 core modules to it
Attach 2 Satellite bases to each of the 3 outer core modules
Total 4 core bases, 6 satellite bases

I like the idea, and I think the thought of having it as something the Galactic Powers, in their poor understanding of how the Andromedans operated MIGHT put in a simulator is a good one.

Perhaps the only limit I might apply to anything would be not NOT allow it in scenarios involving Galactic Powers operating alongside Magellanic Powers ships; by the time the GP would have good enough understanding and communications with the Magellanics, they'd know about the Desecrator(s?) the Magellanics took out already and would understand that a unit like this would not be part of the Andromedan invasion force.

Jeff A: Knowing about the other Desecrators tells the Galactics the Andromedans originally wanted multiple intergalactic links. The Galactics would understand a unit like this was not part of the Andros original invasion plans. But with the Andros facing the loss of their last intergalactic link, they could suspect the Andros would resort to desperate measures to create a new link.

A worst case scenario for Operation Unity, other than outright failure, is destroying the remaining Desecrator, going home thinking they've won, following Organian plans for disarmament...and the Andros secretly cook up another invasion.

Good points, BUT I see one thing in them...

The Magellanics were able to wreck at least one desecrator (IF my memory is working properly). Such a loss could have wrecked the Andromedan Invasion before it really got started.

Despite that, the Andromedans built further Desecrator type units, complete with the risk of possible befouling ("Desecration" :)) by the Magellanics. This suggests (to me, so it's probably wrong) that the Andromedans needed something as big and vulnerable AS a Desecrator to serve as an anchor for the RTN.

Leads me to suspect there might be something about that giant unit that's not on the SSD that was the key to it.

ON THE OTHER HAND, a base like this might just be what the Andromedans would want for administering a massive, formal shipyard. Something like this, hidden deep in a dark nebula, with half of the Satellite Base units being "Construction" types (like on the BAC; R10.67), it might be just what they're looking for.

The base proposed is interesting and has uses but it takes a desecrator to anchor an RTN long-range link to the MWG.

Perhaps something along these lines could be what the Andromedans attempted to cobble together behind the walls of the Ryn Nebula over in the Omega Octant, in the two years between the loss of the third Desecrator in the LMC and the onset of Y204's Operation Concerted Strike.

The goal in this instance would not be to try and re-establish an Intergalactic Trunk Line to M31, but rather to provide increased logistical support for the Motherships desperately fleeing other areas of space to reach what in effect was their last known stronghold on this side of the galaxy.

In which case, I would agree with one or more of the "outer" modules being fabrication types, of the kind seen on the construction battle station noted above.
