Greetings all.
This is my first sojourn into this particular forum. It's nice to be here, finally!
Anyway, I have been playing SFB since the early 80's. I got out for quite some time, but I just purchased the new Master Rule Book, and so I got up the gumption to run yet another campaign.
I'm not sure exactly how to classify it; set in y160, my players are all young officers who are part of an escort squadron in the Federation 2nd Home Fleet. I have a system (it's in my head right now, but I'll have it in digital format soon) where the players build up experience points (for the Klingons it's Honor Points, for the Feds it Commendations, Romulans curry Favor, but you get the idea; different flavor for each empire, same effect). These experience points are used to improve one's crew, one's officers, and one's ship. Save up enough points and you get a promotion to a bigger and better ship.
I also wanted to give my players the option of improving their ships, but to my chagrin I have found that as of around 1990, rule section (S3.3 Modifying Ships) has been removed!
Now, I ask a favor.
I'm not asking anyone to break any laws, but does anyone have any idea where I can get a digital copy of the relevant rules section? It's an old piece, and one that isn't even in use anymore, so I hope I haven't just broken a slew of board regulations.
I really need this piece of ancient codification, and if anyone can help, anyone at all, I would appreciate it immensely. I don't know if the proposed revision (S7.0) has seen publication yet, and I'm not asking for a copy of that (although is any moderators happen across this and would be willing to let me playtest it I'd certainly be game), and even if it is available I really want the old system because I am pretty familiar with it and I know how to keep my players from getting just plain stupid with it.
Anyway, enough from me for now. If anyone wants to see the advancement system once I get it written I will gladly post it here. I'll also try to put up post-game debriefings. Our first night will be next Wednesday.
See y'all soon.
Thanks

S3.3 was removed from the game due to balance issues and player abuse.
You can still run your game without it; with all the various refits, S3.3 would be redundant anyway.
Example: Fed player.
Starts out in a FF. Has options to upgrade into FF+, FFG, FFB, etc.

Sean,
Although it wouldn't be of any use in the campaign you are just starting, due to the Y160 timeframe, the XP rules also allow players to customize ships. If you are unfamiliar with the XP rules, they basically allow players to upgrade some systems on a standard technology ship to X-technology.
Which systems are upgradeable depends on the ship. For example, most ships can upgrade their heavy weapons to X-tech but dreadnoughts (too much stress since the ship already carries so many weapons) and war cruisers (designed to be produced very quickly, but this entailed certain "shortcuts" that make them less durable than other ships) cannot. Note that dreadnoughts and war cruisers can upgrade other systems to X-tech, just not their heavy weapons.
Some XP-upgrades have other limitations. Of particular note, upgrading a battery allows it to hold 3 points of power rather than one. But the ship's power distribution system (too expensive and complex to upgrade unless the ship is totally converted to a fully capable X-ship) prevents it from expending reserve power greater than the number of batteries in a single impulse. So, for example, a D6 receives an XP upgrade to its 3 batteries. It now has 9 points of reserve power but can only use 3 points per impulse. It can still use all 9 points of reserve power in a single turn, but this usage would be spread over (at least) 3 separate impulses.
Some systems are not upgradable at all unless undergoing the full conversion to an X-ship. For example, no XP-ship gets X-tech warp engines. And no XP-ship can receive the X-ship EW advantages.
The draft rules were published in a Captain's Log (I don't recall which one) and the final rules were published in Module X-1R. If you ever run a similar campaign set in the Y180s, you might want to try those.

You guys do realize that the updated S3.3 is on the website in the download section, right?

Ah it is in the play aids section. I tried searching for it in the master index, but I think it has yet to be added there.

The Masters are up to their old tricks again. This time, THERE'S TWO OF THEM! They've gobbled up a few colonies from each empire and deposited them in a far away land of narrow travel lanes and broad adventure.
"Another Way to Glory" is a Star Fleet Battles campaign run by Matthew Potter. It is designed as a beginning-war 4X campaign. "Another Way to Glory" begins in Y166.
Josh Driscol is running a sister campaign called "A Better Point of Aim". It is designed as a late-war fleet campaign. "A Better Point of Aim" begins in Y175.
Both are using a common set of rules (found at sfb.mattnet.org/another_glory.html). Both are based on the campaign "Canis Minor", run by Jon Berry, which was based on the successful Farthest Stars campaign that was started by Dale McKee.
AVAILABLE EMPIRES
Federation (R2.0), Klingon (R3.0), Romulan (R4.0), Kzinti (R5.0), Gorn (R6.0), Tholian (R7.0), Hydran (R9.0), Lyran (R11.0), ISC (R13.0), FRAX (R51.0), and Peladine (Module E4)
The campaign "A Better Point of Aim" is using an abbreviated set of races to select from:
Federation (R2.0), Klingon (R3.0), Romulan (R4.0), Kzinti (R5.0), Gorn (R6.0), Tholian (R7.0), Hydran (R9.0), Lyran (R11.0), ISC (R13.0), and Peladine (Module E4)

Any one interested in a 1 vs 1 campaign ?
I have rules that allow us to play with several Empires, map is involved, repairs, income etc.
Do note the mixing up of technologies between the Empires is not allowed !
Ping me if interested.
For ease of scheduling, I live in the EST time Zone.

I've been asked to post my question elsewhere, and this is the best elsewhere I can think of.
I've managed to wrangle up enough local F2F interest in a T0.0 SFB style mini campaign centered around an attack on Kzintai (Kzinti homeworld) in a "historical" set of scenarios.
I have most of it all figured out except the planetary defenses (read: PDUs) of Kzintai.
As I understand from playing F&E, SVC defined a PDU as 2xGBDP, a FGB-M, 2xGWS and a "standard pack of DefSats" (5).
So, I made the following chart showing the progression of purchasing Kzinti PDUs one at a time. I specifically divided the FGB-M to 2xFGB-S to give more planetary hex side coverage. Power grids (and GPS) are assumed and not reflected in the chart.
For a little diversity, I had BMBs replace FGB-S and GBDDs/GMBs/GHDs replace a single GBDP.
GREEN indicates that the base in question will be subsequently replaced by a RED base. i.e. FGB-S grows up to a FGB-M and BMB grows up to a BHB.
DefSat "house rule" is that no two of a single type (Ph2/Drn/Disr) can occupy the same hex in orbit (1/2/3 hex).
The chart is CUMULATIVE. And the reason I asked for SVC's help is because I'm thinking that it's too much, and needed his opinion as to whether those forces were appropriate for a Capital planet on an SFB level, given his definition of a PDU.
In the interest of full disclosure, Ryan Opel has already volunteered to help with this, but all input is very sincerely appreciated.
Here's the chart...
Number of PDUs | Planet Hex Side | DefSat Orbit Level
A | B | C | D | E | F | 1 | 2 | 3 | |
1 | 1xGWS | 1xFGB-S | 1xGBDP | 1xGWS | 1xFGB-S | 1xGBDP | 3xPh2 | 2xPh2
2 | 1xFGB-S | 1xGBDP | 1xGWS | 1xFGB-S | 1xGBDP | 1xGWS | 2xDrn | 2xDrn | 1xPh2 |

I see an obvious error already.
2xFGB-S does *not* equal 2xBMB
It should be 1xBMB and a blank slot.

Looking for a Hydran Admiral replacement in Border Wars campaign.
Current year is spring Y164, Hydran have 7 borders, 4 with the Carnivons and 3 with the Klingons.
This is an online campaign using Matt Potter's wonderful program !
No book keeping involved, just assign your forces to scenarios, fight, enter result, repeat.
Scenario results pending on winning or losing could be inflate your income, deflate it, gain or lose borders etc.
If interested, please post here or send me an email for faster results.

Above & Beyond has an opening for a Kzinti Admiral.
Currently on T4[Fall Y169] so quite young.
Fleet size based on CBpv to encourage battles.

Above & Beyond East [ABE] and Above and Beyond West [ABW] has a vacancy in each campaign.
ABE needs a Romulan Admiral and ABW needs a Lyran Admiral.
ABE is currently fighting out battles for T12 [Roms have 4 battles to resolve] and ABW just finished T11 and about to submit T12 orders.
Please note AB is a play test campaign. With input from the Admirals and onlookers, the rules are shaping up to be quite nice !!
Once AB has run its course [hoping to get 25-30 turns in !], I will launch the Time Wars campaign applying the AB final rules set.
Both campaigns[ABE and ABW] were started back in Nov of 2020.
Be prepared for a lot of battles as the rules do not allow for an easy escape.
We do have a stable of captains for hire should RL happen.
If interested, please ping me at my email.
Thanks.
