What did in the Fed Cinderella Story (i.e. Ted vs Crash)?

By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Tuesday, April 04, 2023 - 10:43 am: Edit

Edited by me - Decided to edit myself cause I have nothing nice to say about the Fed TCC. :)

MadJack is upset with the Fed because they denied his application to Star Fleet Academy - He did not have what it takes to be accurate with a Photon and his obsession with the Wyn Shark centerfolds Pics.

I own it - Shark's a sexy ship!

Turn 2 the Fed and AUX exchange R 5 shots. The Fed hit with 2 photons and 6 p1s for 20 some internal getting a drone rack and 2 p3s. My return fire was just 1 direct fire HB doing 9 damage. The next imp I was able to slip into R4 on the same shield , and fired the other HB as a standard and 4 p1s bringing his #2 shield to 1 box.
Turn three we circle back around to face each other.
Turn four imp one I fired 4 p1s and both HB as OL hitting with one for 9 internals and doing 15 to his #6. Imp 3 he slip into R4 and dropped to speed 4. And then unloaded 4 photons and 6 p1s , only hitting with 1 photon. Doing a grand total of 39 damage , after reinforcement I still had one box left. That’s when he conceded.
If Ted had hit with 2 more photons it would have been a different story to tell.

Overall, I maneuvered well, and my drone defense was excellent. However, the phickle photon phail strikes again.

C'est al vive!

I once had the great honor of being a tenor in one of three choirs, together with a full symphony orchestra, performing the whole of Carmina Burana in Boettcher Concert Hall in downtown Denver, CO.

Absolutely amazing. The WALL OF SOUND that hits you after the first bass drum strike of O Fortuna is... exhilarating to say the least.

@Ginger: Add a new Fed! The CF!

@Steve Petrick, I'd appreciate your feedback on the official proposal for a playtest Fed TCF I emailed you a couple of weeks ago.

I have been mulling the idea for a while (between trying to get my own work done, which is more a problem for my reduced circumstances than anything else). The principle problem is that other players will note the changes to the Federation and request the same for their ships. And that the changes are making the Federation into a Phaser boat.

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Thursday, April 06, 2023 - 02:22 pm: Edit

I will respond privately to SPP.

I've often thought of trying to run it as a phaser boat, (after the initial volley of photons anyway... can't let that free energy go to waste!), but suspect it just won't be as good as the Wyn Aux Phaser boat. Specifically because of the superior movement cost of the Aux.

Action will commence Tuesday 8p, MadJack (Hydran) versus Hood (Fed) in a game that will likely be over in 20 minutes, half of that will be getting drinks ready. Cause that makes sense when there is a 600 page rulebook and 2 excellent players.

Schedule will be 8p-8:20 or if I play really excellent 8:21p. Be prompt or you'll miss umm, everything.

I honestly don't think this is an issue that needs worrying about. It is a pretty widely accepted feeling among current SFB tournament players that the Fed should get *something* done to it to make it a somewhat more viable ship for tournament play. The tournament environment is pretty balanced at this point, and the ships are largely totally solid, and folks realize this. The Fed suffers from the things that the Fed suffers from (i.e. it is very luck dependent), and while I'm not convinced that the Fast Fad is the solution, it is at least worth experimenting with, and I don't think it'll result in an avalanche of "Hey! Make a Fast Gorn!" or anything.

SPP,
Can you please make a Fast Gorn!
Thanks!

Have you _seen_ the TOS episode? Gorn are _not_ fast!

But seriously, I concur that I think a Fast Fed is worth a look. I _hope_ I speak for all of us when I say that for tournaments, we just sort of accept certain things (like no stealthy Orions, etc.) for tournament viability and fleet distinctness.

By Seth Shimansky (Kingzila) on Friday, April 07, 2023 - 09:31 pm: Edit

There are 18 or so ships in the tournament and one of them has a big luck factor thats just enough to put a little spin on things. When you don't roll well with the Fed it's a nightmare to reload.

There is nothing wrong with the Fed - the addition of the G rack has help the ship a lot. I played it about 6 tournaments ago and made it to the final and rolled poorly for 3 of the 4 games. The one game I rolled great was r8 vs ISC and hit for all 4.

If a ship should be added it should be a fast big plasma. just joking -There are already 2 fast disruptor ships.

I am happy with no additional ships but if there going to be any changes then these are my suggestions.

Shark - loose 1 p3 in the front maybe 2
Archeo - give it a 2nd het bonus OR change it that it breaks down on a six after the bonus.
Ando - I have no idea how to fix it - its just broken
Kzinti - give back its 4th type 4 drone
LDR - give it 1 more power
Neo- give it a 2nd snare
Orion - loose the 2nd het bonus but keep the break down at 6 and also tighten the rear arcs on the p3

just my thoughts

Ummm, Jamey, the Gorn may not be fast, but their ships are. The aggressor in that episode was pulling away from Scotty's Enterprise when they got stopped by external agency.

And they need to be fast because they turn with the seasons.

As for the Fast Fed... I dislike the idea. Yes, it addresses some parts of the problems, but it simply makes more in its wake.

I'll get into statistics here, but look at the all of the ships without option mounts, and compare the best possible direct-fire heavy weapon only alpha strike. A three photon fed drops from 64 to 48, compared to the 40 of any of the disruptor armed ships this seems reasonable except that if you were to play fairly, it should be 80. The disruptor advantage is still there, slightly better accuracy not-withstanding.

If I'm turning in for a firing pass, and I think I can at best hit for 48 points, with 32 being more likely, is it worth the loss of the shield, the turn spent running, and trying to maneuver around two turns later to keep a fresh shield towards the enemy? And if you roll poorly, you'll do very little if any damage and then be running around with only your phasers. The TCF Fed as proposed as plenty of phasers, maybe too many that can fire through the FA arc, without getting a centerline shot.

The Disruptor folks get bit the same way to a point, they have slightly better hit chances at the cost of less damage at greater ranges. And if all your willing to commit is the disruptors you may not hit with enough force to punch through the brick and shield, leaving you with your own bad choices.. Even if a dinged shield is easier to follow up on than a Fed that misses with four photons.

As for the Andro... Its a finesse ship that is crippled by the size of its panels and the reduced battery storage. If the forward panels -- separated on the SSD into two banks of three -- could be flipped independently, the current size of the battery array would allow the Andromedan to use its best means to rebuild its defenses As it is, if you have full panels, you don't have enough battery capacity to flip the forward panels. The TRHs help, but even so, the R3 crunch power isn't there and never was. The addition of T-bomb only helps in drone fights, and even if you were allowed to swap it for a PA mine, it would not replace the option the galactics have to weasel. The notion of replacing the T-bomb with the micro-energy module is probably the idea with the best return. That being side, I do wish the Andro could do more to defend against plasma, but alias, all that power has a price.

I guess I am all for a different Fed ship that has less than 4 photons in the FA.

Imagine Scottish accent now.

Who's with me?????

If there is enough of us we can form a union and picket or something until our demands are met!!!

So we are still on the Fast Fed talk?

I dont want a fast fed added to the tournament.

neither do I

I think in Sapphire 14 everyone should have take the Fed, then it's an even playing field!! :)
