The Gorn Anchor Strikes Again!

Yeah, coulda/shoulda/woulda .... maybe things go better for the ISC with some different luck (a more cooperative DAC), or different choices, like emer decel earlier ...

Anyway, I'm now 1-1 vs Peter's Gorn with the ISC in Sapphire tournament play, but he gets the title this time! Congratulations again!

Thanks, Geof!

Yeah, that game was good. I did a couple dumb things--I forgot to fire a couple phasers at the incoming dual plasma F's that were about to hit and possibly blow off some phasers, which would have saved me 5 or 6 internals, but then I figured you were moving faster than you were going to be, and was all "that's probably the pseudo G...". Even if it was, firing a couple phasers into the known real F was a thing I should have done, and just forgot to do. I also should have used a battery to block a point of damage when it turned out the two turn F *was* real, again, saving an internal.

On top of that, I also got a little lucky there--the 34 internals killed my first tractor, and after that with he follow up pair of P1 strikes for 4 and 5 damage, it wasn't that likely I'd lose the second tractor, but it also wasn't impossible (you just needed to roll two 10's on the same small volley), at which point, the game was over.

(for future notes reference, the ISC had 2 total negative tractor; 1 allocated, 1 remaining battery after a HET with 3 allocated power and the two turn F launch; I grabbed him with a strength 3, 6 power tractor at R2; also the 3 unused batteries I lost on the first 34 internals were actually 2 empty batteries from my earlier speed change and 1 unused battery; 2 survived the initial volley [thanks, Gorn C Hull!] and at the end of the impulse, were dumped into the tractors before they got shot off).

Thanks for the great game, Geof, and next tournament, I'll fly something wacky again!

Ok it's been 4 days now basking in Peter's glow.

How about rolling the next one?

It seems like Paul sent me in the right direction to fix my SFBOL client (and now I can see all the controls, and IA chart, etc.), so I'm good!

And second Let's Start A New Tournament!

(granted, it is the holidays, and everyone is underwater, so a delay is also understandable).

Peter - what was your underlying issue? Is it something that was caused by an update to Mac ios?

Just wondering in case it comes up again.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Monday, December 18, 2023 - 08:57 pm: Edit

I honestly have no idea.

I moved the game window slightly out of the client screen (to the north and west) so I couldn't see buttons and things. And nothing I could do could move the game window back into the client screen. The game was mostly playable, but I couldn't see, like, the left most column of the impulse chart (which made it difficult to see what actual impulse it was), and if someone put shuttles on the map, the "shuttle squadron" button on the main navigation bar made it so I couldn't get back to the map. It was all a hassle that I could not fix through any mundane solution.

Finding the current userinfo.properties file and deleting it, however, fixed everything by putting the game back into default. I had to reset all my preferences, but at least the game window is back to regular now.

Good that you shared what the solution is, and how to do the reset. One never knows when some Microsoft update or other have unintended consequences.

Hm, i always disliked the clutter of windows on the same space as the map. Maybe I should try set up my spare monitor. Never had a reason to do that before, but if the next tourney starts then...

I have to get Jean to start the list for gamers, and get Paul Franz to set up the topic.

By Jeff Guthridge (Jeff_Guthridge) on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 - 06:41 pm: Edit

Carl, if you do setup multiple monitors, be wary that all of the windows remember which monitor and what pixel they were placed on, even if that pixel is out of current resolution or on a monitor that is not currently connected.

That's been my problems with a 34" 5k monitor at home that I hook my laptop up to.

In this case too, deleting the userinfo.properties files does the trick.

If I had the time to invest, I think I could devise an alternate means to present the information Paul does. But I don't have that sort of time these days where I can spend hours a day on a programming goal.

Jeff, that makes sense. Lol, imagine the look on my face if that happened to me! Thank you!

A thing that is important to emphasize is that, depending on your machine, I'd imagine, it is possible that there are multiple user info.properties files, and deleting some of them will not help. I deleted one of them, which was probably from a 2020 version of SFBOL on my computer, and nothing changed. Eventually we figured out that I should delete the other one that was hidden somewhere on my machine, and after doing a computer search for userinfo.properties, another one showed up (which I couldn't even manage to find manually, even after seeing the path to get there; sometimes, Mac information hierarchies is *very* convoluted), I deleted that one, and the day was saved.

Google to figure out what's wrong, Google for a solution, then Google for the location of the files.
