No podcast tonight. I am on vacation

By Joshua Ivan Driscol (Gfb) on Sunday, December 05, 2021 - 02:53 am: Edit

My local gaming group has finally agreed en mass to play Star Fleet Battles about once a month in Cottage Grove Oregon.

We have five players and as two of them are returning to the game after a long long hiatus I think we are going to start out with tournament ships and tournament rules only.

I'm hopeful that it will be a good game of three on two Star Fleet Battles tournament.

I'll be captaining one team while Neonpico captains the other team. I've got the new guys on my team and Matt is taking Greg T under his wing for this one.

We are going to use a laminated Starfire system map. Another game created by the great Steven V Cole that I love even though he sold the thing eons ago. The map is outstanding for space battles it's about 65 hexes in a hexagon shape the outermost ring of which will represent a standard sfb tournament barrier.

The Ships on my team are my ship a WYN Auxillary with HHBB options. An ISC TCC and Federation TCC.

It's been agreed that we will start 35 hexes distance from the enemy and spread out in line abreast.

I suspect that our opposition will choose two Andromedan Krait and a third ship to be commanded by Neonpico in addition to his Krait.

I expect to lose a ship on each pass to concentrated fire. I've never played a 3 on 3 tournament before and am unsure what to expect.

Matt wants a planet at the center of the map and I'm utterly convinced that's an excellent idea. But I have a better one. I'll propose to the group that the center of the map be a singularity. A black hole.

Let the Andromedans have a good laugh we won't go near it. But ships that sustain too many power hits could find themselves in deep trouble.

We were going to take the Soludra out for a spin and may in future gaming sessions but for the sake of our returning players were trying to keep it relatively simple.

We plan to use sfbol for damage allocation and to calculate damage but use real dice for weapons fire and whatnot. It should be the best of both worlds. We will simply rectify the ship displays with what the client shows after we allocate damage that alone will save an hour of time in our busy day.

I suggested the bad guys take 2 Kraits and a Carnivon TCC of Neonpico's design that is very hard hitting.

The Carnivon TCC has a seeking weapon similar to drones that is terribly hard to kill and the Disruptor cannon is nearly as powerful as a photon torpedo. That could pair well with two Andromedan Kraits.

I know they would take 3 Kraits except for the prohibition against more than 2 displacement device capable ships in any force.

Worst case scenario for me Neonpico takes two Tholians and Greg takes the Andromedan.

Should be a nasty little battle.

I'm going to talk them into some terrain. Perhaps a black hole at the center of the map.

Wish us luck were trying to get old players back into the game which is probably our best bet for finding new players.

Can SFB Online be used to go through a SFB Tactics article from a Captain's Log? Meaning with only one person controlling both "sides"? Or do I have to set up a physical board and pieces?

By Jeff Guthridge (Jeff_Guthridge) on Monday, October 03, 2022 - 12:13 pm: Edit

Jonny, you can setup a scenario like that, move the pieces around and such, but your will find the system ‘resists’ a little here and there, like having to tick the ALL checkbox when setting up to fire weapons when declaring targets. EA isn’t bad though, as you don’t have to wait for the other side..

This is just from my tinkering with the client solo, mind you. If more experienced hands can comment on things I might learn some things too.

By Johnny Casady (Phythalion) on Monday, October 03, 2022 - 01:04 pm: Edit

Well, I was kinda wondering if I could move the pieces around, put seeking weapons on the board, and such (without actually having to fill out an EA form or other details) so I could follow along with a Captain's Log article. Its kinda hard to visualize what is going on with those articles sometimes and some of them are quite detailed so it wouldn't be too hard to reconstruct at least some of the maneuvering.

By Jeff Guthridge (Jeff_Guthridge) on Monday, October 03, 2022 - 03:55 pm: Edit

Yeah, you can. You will get warnings about units ther have already moved moving again, and you will have to flash through an EA but the client doesn’t audit energy used so you can probsnly just load everything and fill the phaser cap and move whatever speed you have power remaining for.

Paul may be able to explain how to leverage the cadet training mission modes to more easily do what your looking fit.

Have you played with the VTT engine Vassal? There is an approved Cadet module for it.

How would you build a tug and apply damage? The pods can be added to the map but damage allocation isn't built for it.

By Ginger McMurray (Gingermcmurray) on Saturday, December 10, 2022 - 09:18 am: Edit

How do I launch plasma? I've tried from 3 different ships and I don't get an option in the dropdown to launch a non-pseudo / non-ECP torp. If I try to just pick the blank line it says I can't launch without picking a type.

By Gregory S Flusche (Vandar) on Saturday, December 10, 2022 - 01:07 pm: Edit

You need to go into expendables load them there. Then Then they will show up in IA.

Play the monster scenarios a few times to get used to the client.
