Congrats! I mean, it is better if my team mate wins and all, but still!

Congrats Carl! Yay bad guys!!

Geoff, how is your game vs Daniel going?

By Jessica Orsini (Jessica_Orsini) on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 02:39 pm: Edit

Nicely played and nicely told, Carl.

By Carl-Magnus Carlsson (Hardcore) on Sunday, June 16, 2024 - 05:35 pm: Edit

Thank you, Jessica. I think I actually spent more time writing about the duel than fighting it:)

By Carl-Magnus Carlsson (Hardcore) on Monday, June 17, 2024 - 03:44 am: Edit

I used Google voice typing, translate and chatgpt for something Peter Bakija could have written in a few minutes.

Hey Hardcore,

Stimpy and I have had quite a battle so far. Very briefly (and 100% from memory), KLG deploys SP immediately and recovers shuttle. HYD keeps his distance for turn 1, KLG discharges some (3?) OL. Turn 2 is similar, I think KLG fired 2xSTD, and discharges 2xOL, while HYD continues to run into the SW map corner. So turn 3 is where the action is really starting.

Turn 3 - KLG has a 28-15 plot, with no DISR and 17 in tractor. HYD plots 0-9, with OL HBs. 6 drones are inbound, about 8-9 hexes away, as is the KLG. Over the first few imps, KLG approaches faster than drones, on the hex spine. HYD fires Ph-1s and HB at range 4 on the KLG's #6, hits creates weak shield and does some internals, maybe less than 10, hits nothing major. KLG turns to continue the approach, HYD launches WW, which KLG immediately kills with 1xPh-1, 1xPh-3 at range 3. KLG moves into range 1, just as the WW protection ends, but the HYD's FC is not up yet, since 6xdrones are still there, just coming to range 1. KLG tractors HYD and there is no big auction, so KLG launches fast drones (presumably heavies, plus a SS that moves next impulse. This means that KLG has to drop tracking on 3xSP drones (in hindsight, I should have held the SS until later ...). Anyway, the HYD now has a choice to fire at the new drones, under passive FC, at which point the WW's effect on the SP drones is voided, or to keep under the protection and let the new drones hit. HYD chooses to fire at the new drones, hits with just enough to kill them, but takes SS, plus phasers, as well as 3xSP drones. HYD has 5 reinforcement, plus 5 more (presumably btty), so takes maybe only 10 internals (?). Shortly after this, KLG releases tractor, and HYD launches fighters. KLG is able to kill one fighter with remaining rear phasers, and later will tractor the other fighter at range 3, which the fighter hets away to break, and thus does not get a shot at the KLG. HYD begins to move, and attempts to tractor the fighter, but KLG's tractor power remains, wins the auction. HYD launches 2x manned shuttles in there somewhere, and they do a few internals at range 3 (?).

Turn 4 - KLG moves 20-15, arms phasers, repairs 1 box on two down shields, and comes about. HYD continues to move away at lowish speed, rearming. KLG phasers the last fighter, and gives chase, keeping shuttles in the 8-ish bracket.

Turn 5 - HYD plots zero, tacs and then accelerates to speed 9. KLG plots 15-ish, arms phasers and some significant reinforcement on both of the one-box shields. I think HYD blasts with an OL HB in the 8-bracket, hits and scores maybe 2-3 internals, KLG continues to close and try to get a shot on the down #2 or #6 shields. Lots of manuever, HYD takes another HB shot about range 4 and misses, KLG is just about to get on a weak shield, but HYD turns away. KLG about imp 25, range 3-4, fires phasers and a few DISR (maybe 1xOL, 2xSTD?) on the #3, sees 5 reinf, scores maybe 9 internals and rolls all hull! HYD shortly thereafter HETs back, KLG turns out but shows the down #3. HYD fires 3xph-1s, at range 3, rolls 1,1,1, scores 18 or so internals, but does not hit many phasers, since only the Ph-2 remains in arc.

So, Turn 6 is coming up. It is has been a slugfest, a good game all around. Seems like HYD might have the upper hand in power, and internals ... but KLG's fat lady has yet to sing!

Sneaky move there with the tractor!

Heh. I type real fast. But I can't even actually type! It's all Hunt-n-Peck!

Way back it was a cool thing to be good at, but nowadays people type with their thumbs mostly...

My tractors have been the secret weapon lately, just ask Jack :D

By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Thursday, June 20, 2024 - 09:59 am: Edit

Actually, that was Jack not knowing ESG rules. If I knew the rules, I'd still be wiping Romulan off my boots. It was a cool tractor though-facts.

By Carl-Magnus Carlsson (Hardcore) on Friday, June 21, 2024 - 02:05 am: Edit

Speaking of tractors the issue with tractor tunnel of death come up in a recent practice game vs Seth.
The suicid Dinghys were mine and the tractor was his. Unfortunately he was going slow enough to weasel them away, the snake.

Finding the relevant rules made me consider buying the pdf masterbook. Until I saw the price tag.

By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Friday, June 21, 2024 - 12:02 pm: Edit

I have the PDF but still found it hard to find the right rules. What rule did you use to decide?

By Carl-Magnus Carlsson (Hardcore) on Friday, June 21, 2024 - 01:56 pm: Edit

G7.94 and G7.54. The keyword is "effective speed".
I was only moving at speed 10 when held in tractor.

An advantage for smaller ships, but nothing to turn into a tactic.

By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Friday, June 21, 2024 - 04:49 pm: Edit

G7.54 seems very clear. Thanks.

By Geoffrey Clark (Spartan) on Saturday, June 22, 2024 - 10:28 am: Edit

Hey Jack,

In that game, you had played so well up to that point ... by all rights you should have had roasted Romulan BBQ, but it is those little things that can get you in the end, so glad we clarified (G23.5732).

BTW, you've really showed great anti-plasma tactics recently, so I'm gonna have to innovate a bit more ... so it is a fair trade!

Of course, this all assumes that S17 even gets started at all ... maybe we can plan another JFF battle in the mornings sometime this week? I'm up to fly KLG vs LYR, or other match-ups.

MadJack (LDR) over Stimpy (Hydran) in 40 impulses.

Turn1, I top of the esgs, 2 suicides, and make 18 moves (16/26). I sort of dodge a little bit. Stimpy charges the hellbores, the std fusions, and 1 suicide. He makes 19 total moves.

I sort of slip right most the turn and he comes up the board. He launches the fighters imp 25. I shoot the fighters at range 15 and cripple 1 with some good rolling. Late in the turn I bring 1 esg up at range 0 and start to bring up the other one which will be range 3.

T2 - I overload 2 FX disr, hold the sui's, and make a 31/19 plot for 17 power. I put 3 in tractor. Stimpy overloads both hellbores and makes 16 moves (26 at first, slowing alot). He has 1 suicide and 4 held std fusions. He also puts 3 in tractor.

We start the turn at range 8 heading straight at each other. My 2nd esg comes up imp 3 at we are 4 hexes apart. He can't launch shuttles to help with the esgs. He decides to fires the hellbores and phasers. He knocks the ESG's down and takes my shield 6 down to 1 point. We keep closing. I fire 2 p1 at range 5 at the uncrippled fighter hoping I can cripple it but no luck. He moves his ship so that I enter his hex on an impulse he does not move. He is centerlined and I am on his #6. We both launch 2 shuttles but his cant hurt me as I move next impulse. He is forced to fire upon my shuttles with his phaser Gs and fires 2 overloaded fusions (batts) on my 1. I fire everything and do 83 to him and 4 feedback to myself. No internals to me but shield #1 is gone. He takes ALOT of internals. 15 power, HB, fusion, 4 phasers, batteries, kitchen sink. It's not that bad really. I move out of his hex and he blasts me again for 29 with the other 2 fusions and gat on my #3. I take a few internals, 1 disr, 1 power. The stupid fighter I couldn't cripple also shoots me for a few internals and gets 1 phaser. I have 9 internals and 3 down shields. He has 52 internals and needs a major remodel. He concedes here. I still have both ESGs, he isn't ever hurting me again. Quick fun tense game!!

Good job! That makes the score 7-4 for team Coalition, with seven more to go.

By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Monday, June 24, 2024 - 01:09 pm: Edit

Thanks Geof- I have had to get better against plasma to stop getting my arse kicked by you and Seth.

By Jack Taylor (Jtaylor) on Monday, June 24, 2024 - 01:11 pm: Edit

I do have to reiterate, it's a relief to get by Stimpy in my LDR game in a fairly straight forward way. I lost half my remaining hair in my last battle against him. That one was incredibly tough.

By Daniel Bitseff (Cadet_Stimpy) on Monday, June 24, 2024 - 03:14 pm: Edit

It would have been a much more fun game if I had just fired a single OL HB to take down both ESG rings (except 5 pts at radius 0), instead of firing the whole wad at range 4. Terrible mistake on my part.

By Geoffrey Clark (Spartan) on Thursday, June 27, 2024 - 09:53 pm: Edit

Stimpy's HYD finally finished my KLG today. Good game Stimp!

I'm looking for Peter's Kzinti, or Matt's ATC.

By Carl-Magnus Carlsson (Hardcore) on Friday, June 28, 2024 - 12:05 am: Edit

Well, i suppose the odds were on the Hellbores side once the shields were lost.

Good job from both of you, and congrats to Stimpy!
