We can use again what we have used before. We cannot use something we never used from a series from which we have used other things.

By Douglas Lampert (Dlampert) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 04:59 pm: Edit

Kzinti and stasis generators are both from Animated Series episodes, but [SVC posts while I'm posting, deleted line].

Re: Legendary Federation Commissioner and other political handicaps.

I tend to think that republics are actually LESS likely to have interfering politicians than other militaries. ISC and Feds may have the Commissioner, for the other organizations, you get the "Emperor's idiot cousin", who's actually in command of the fleet and/or its logistics.

Lyrans don't have any drones, because they're not drone users.
But sir! This is a carrier!
Don't bother me with irrelevant details captain! Do you know who I am?!

Klingons/Romulans have their mauler close with the enemy at max speed under seeking weapon rules, and not fire or use tractors till at range 1. It's the ship's job to close and destroy after all.

Hydrans have one guild providing maintenance and stores to ships designed by another guild, so you get no commander's options this scenario but are treated for BPV as if you had the maximum allowed.

Kzinti, obviously, you attack, you must overload all weapons, fire drones at maximum rate, and launch all shuttles and fighters at maximum rate. Who cares that you're at range 30 and haven't yet armed the shuttles? You attack.

Gorn, beats me, you attack a colony world of a possible ally for no good reason. Or maybe you drop shields so you can board anytime the enemy has a down shield facing you.

SVC-
Thanks for that licensing clarification.

Can we pull artistic license for a simulator from other source material that is licensed? For example *IF* ADB were to pick up the sim idea, could it be justified out of Gurps/D20 source data...so long as things were carefully worded? Also, *IF* such were possible, I image that "Holodeck" would be prohibited. Correct?

By Steve Cain (Stevecain) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 05:05 pm: Edit

Douglas-
I did the commissioner b/c I can't even begin to roll my eyes at how much TOS (and others) have used that foil.

By Douglas Lampert (Dlampert) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 05:08 pm: Edit

Sure, I recognize the idea, I just don't see any reason to limit that to the Feds, I tend to think most of the other empires are even more vulnerable to insane orders from above.

By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 05:16 pm: Edit

Douglas Lampert:

Oh you are so, so, wrong. Just because it is not as often covered in our histories, it does happen. A lot.

Consider the "Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War" for example (I think that one is old enough that I do not risk setting off a political firestorm if I point out things both Democrats and Republicans have done).

Both dictatorships/absolute monarchies and democracies/republics have their problems with such, and have all through history, and both have some versions of "checks and balances" to try to handle them. But neither is free from interfering bureaucrats or politicians trying to throw weight around.

Even George Washington had to deal with members of the Continental Congress who thought their august posts gave them more insight into what he should be doing than what he himself had, requiring him to do things he considered militarily ... well lets just say "inexpedient" and leave it at that.

By Douglas Lampert (Dlampert) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 05:44 pm: Edit

I have no objection to there being a Federation Commissioner, and freely agree that the Feds would have political interference and that we have had plenty of political interference.

It was really bad for the American Civil War, and far worse at the brigade and regimental level than at the higher levels where it gets more publicity.

I just see no reason to think it wasn't even worse for the Soviets, or the Nazis, or the Iraqis, or the Kuwaitis, or the Red Army, or....

We've never needed to formally organize a separate commissar group (Soviets) or a secret police branch of the military (Nazis and others).

By Steve Cain (Stevecain) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 06:04 pm: Edit

The reason I said Federation Commissioner was to anchor-point for everybody a easy reference of just how miserable the foil makes life. I could care less if we call them Pink Elephants on Parade; But kinda like the note I added about Legendary Cook needing to be a spec op fall-guy farce, I wanted to provide reference. So now, after being inspired by explaining use of terminology:

Legendary "Go-Go Girl" Marine Squad: This is a team of individuals of interest to the captain's....tastes....that can be purchased in excess of the 10 extra BP limit. They are marines so as to ensure that they are fit; however, the only combat use they have is guarding the Captain as they are ALWAYS with him/her/it. If a H&R on the location of the Captain occurs, they die in that individual's place if the raid would have been a success. Otherwise they are of no consequence to the action b/c they are not outfitted to fight...only dance. The however, *DO* dance and with great vigor to the Songs published under the series of albumns titled "Camptian's Log" by a group that goes by the pseudonym G.O.D.T. (Game's Omnipotent Design Team)

Steve Cole,

My apologies for the "Holo Deck", I was not aware of the legal maters (The idea just popped in my head when I read some of the posts here for an legendary officer), and I do not know much about Next Gen.

By Jessica Orsini (Jessica_Orsini) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 09:28 pm: Edit

It's worth remembering that the German OKW refused to believe that the Americans would sideline what was considered to be their best tactical general (Patton) over a publicity issue (the "slapping a soldier" incident), and yet that's exactly what happened.

Mind, it worked to the Allies advantage in the end, because the fake army (complete with inflatable tanks) they built up around Patton kept a significant German force stuck at Calais, out of belief that what was happening in Normandy was a diversion for the "actual" invasion by Patton's fictional army group.

By Steve Cain (Stevecain) on Friday, January 11, 2019 - 10:18 pm: Edit

Jessica- Very true; although I would wager that Patton would have traded the whole fake army for 10 tanks.

So, on Jessica's behalf- Legendary Hot Head- This Legendary Captain rolls 2D6 per campaign turn. If he rolls a 12 he is forced to command a desk that turn as penance for slapping a wounded red shirt (hold it...a redshirt that LIVED!!!). Price is that of a Legendary Captain less some trivial amount...oh say that he comes with an MRS for 'free' since you could loose him a few turns in a long campaign.

Legendary Surgeon: His bedside manner isn't all that good, his surgical record isn't going to win any awards (or put him under review by the licensing board); but have you seen the amazing kit-bashing that he does?

Legendary Frailli- He is kept locked in an iron mask to avoid the crew suffering from Frailli Syndrome (a catatonic state suffered by non-Frailli due to the horror of the sight). He can recharge two batteries immediately after they are use. This allows them to be used the next impulse. He can only do this once per turn though, quarter turn delay applies.

By Steve Petrick (Petrick) on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 01:20 pm: Edit

Steve Cain:

He is only found on Frailli ships, as even with the mask the thought of what is under it is enough to drive non-Frailli mad. His Legendary status comes from the fact that he causes other Frailli to suffer from Frailli syndrome if he is not wearing the mask.

When I watched Bird Box I admit that the thought crossed my mind that the whole thing could be a Fralli invasion.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 02:45 pm: Edit

I wondered if that was true about Bird Box.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 02:54 pm: Edit

(sigh) Let the beating commence.

By Jon Murdock (Xenocide) on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 03:19 pm: Edit

Jean, are you one of the characters from Bird Box who saw the Fralli as beautiful and tried to force everyone else to look at them?

*Launching Bampton Stewpot, max load*

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, January 24, 2019 - 03:30 am: Edit

Max load? You mean you filled that stewpot with stew before launching it? I hate seeing people waste good food.

Can it have raspberries? I like raspberries.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Thursday, January 24, 2019 - 11:44 am: Edit

Dang.

Spill over on launch again. Make a note for Bampton Industries, either the max fill line is positioned wrong or there is a inertia change of moment during the initial launch phase.

Send back to stores for a steam cleaner, Raspberry stains are hard to get out of the carpet. I told Jean that white carpet was a bad choice for the launch bay decor.

(Sigh.) nobody listens until there is a mess to clean up.

I was hoping someone would run with that reference. Thanks for making my day.

By Steve Cain (Stevecain) on Saturday, February 09, 2019 - 04:42 am: Edit

Wayne- I think I found the referance needed for the holo-....place....ya, the holo-place. The old PD Federation Sourcebook p 66 in Dome E the term "HoloTheater" shows up. I'm not going try to win SVC on it. For all I know, he was referring to tri-videos.

This public service announcement was brought to you by: Insomnia- the 3:30 A.M., wish a Fralli would look at me so I would pass out from fright feeling.
