I was thinking this morning that it would be really cool to have a SFB wall chart of all the ships from the game or for a particular race. We could get Ted to do the art work and format it such that each ship would have its own little box with a 3 way 3d image of the ship. If you look at his site he has a couple 3 way views of the ships that he has done. The chart could include just the hull types of each race or it could include variants as well. In terms of printing it could either be you buy the PDF file and then you self print it as a poster or it could be printed by ADB as a poster.

I second the motion! Not sure what the economincs of this are, but a very high resultion PDF would be great. Although, I'm not sure how ADB would protect the copyright to something like that...

Is there someone out there who does this sort of thing professionally? ADB would own the "file" and the printer would own the right to print it. The buyer purchases through ADB and the printer prints and distributes. Would that work? It's a nifty idea so long as it's kept simple.

I'm just curious how they'll afford to pay Ted to produce 3 views of every ship in the game... Oh My!
But it would look cool on the wall of my gaming room....

Once you create a 3D model of the ship...no big deal to have 3 views of it...

The great thing about this is that it would be pretty easy to assemble especially if it had just the hull types and not the particular scout or drone variants. You might also include fighters and bombers in a small section of the poster or maybe on there own poster. Most carriers don't need to be portrayed but an example list for the feds might be this:
Just Published Historical Stuff(28-30 ships):
BB
CVA
DN
DNL
CX
BC
CF
CC/CA
GCS
CVS
NCA
NCF
DDX
NDN(R9)
NCL
Strike Cruiser(R9)
HDW
DD
DW
FFB
FF
FFX
POL
POL Variants?? from CL and R8
GCA
GDD
GFF
Stellar Shadows Stuff(maybe different poster set?? 7 ships)
DNQ
CAQ
DDQ
TGQ
DCL
FBC
CV(o) Really popular
In reference to an above post, having done a similar project before(not SFB or trek related) once you have the 3D models it would only take a few hours to a day to setup a poster like the above.

The trick is getting it printed cheaply in a small enough print run to make it worthwhile.
If it's just black and white, it might be doable -- provided it was done on a smaller sheet.

Just my own personal opinion...but this would be a logical "tie in" with the 'Leanna's Fighting Ships' product (if and when published).

Good point!

That is a good point but this is something that could hopefully get published sooner and might cost like 15-20 per chart(??).

The old FASA ship recognition guides had something like that as well. Just silhouettes of the ships to get a size comaprison. Effective...

Not sure how people will react to this...but instead of just one "one size fits all" chart that covers everything from drones (size class 7) thru Size Class 1 (IIRC the Seltorian Hive ship) where the smaller units are "lost" in the perspective, how about limiting ships portrayed on the wall chart to comparable sizes...say cruiser/size class 2 for the initial example?
That way, if it is successful, "spinoffs" could do fighters, or PF's, or Size Class 3 ships etc.
If the Wall chart includes say, the Klingon B10 and the Fed F14 fighter (in the same scale) you're going to have a challenge to make out much detail on the tomcat...
By Marcin Radzikowski (Warchild) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 11:36 am: Edit |
Yep...good point. The FASA stuff never got into fighters and shuttles, so it was only capital ships.
By Christopher E. Fant (Cfant) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 12:33 pm: Edit |
I'd rather have everything on one sheet. Wouldn't pay for multiple ones.
You could do small blowups of a few fighters so you could get the detail, like the A-20 and F-14.

In one of David Weber's Honor Harrington novels, there is a similar chart showing line drawings of ship classes. In one corner is an inset chart showing small units that is referenced to the large units.
For example, from top to bottom on the left side, the Klingons would have a B10, C9, etc. down to a G1 PF. Then, inset on the lower right corner, a new set of drawings would start from the G1 and move down to a drone. While the G1 would be a very small object on the "Ship Scale," it would be the largest on the small unit scale, allowing more detail for both it and the small units.

The weird thing is, I don't think ORTHOGONAL ( Three Veiw IIRC ) are all that cool.
Hull class outlines ( a different colour per hull class with a legend at the side ) showing the relative size and shapes of the vessels with maybe some technobable about how ships size class is calculated, now that might actually be a cool poster.
By Clark Chism (Cchism) on Sunday, July 11, 2004 - 07:53 am: Edit |
I agree with Jeff on having it in two sacles. I also think it should include races up to module C3. That would mean Federation, Klingons, Lyrans, Hydrans, WYN, Gorns, Orions, Romulans, Tholians, Neo- Tholians, WYN Fish, Andromedans, ISC, Seltorains and the LDR, but not Omega or Simulator Races. Thats either gonna take up your entire wall or you need seperate sheets.

How about one profile (side or top) for a ship with generic data below it (total power, total weapons, Year produced, BPV). The first chart could be say all the Federation Cruiser variations of the CA, complete with the fighters that were used on the GSCs and CVAs at the time.
I'd love to try to make something like this, let alone have it.

Just to let everybody know I inquired about the cost of printing a color aviation poster today from Kinko's and they said color is about 6 dollars a square foot and black and white about 3 bucks a square foot. With that in mind I'm going to have them print my aviation poster and I will let you know how it comes out. We could in theory do a PDF file as a project and then let everybody print out ther own posters. Unfortunatly I'm not a great artist but if we could get all the 3d ship views I could copy and paste and touch up a poster.
Edit the largest image kinko's can do is 5 feet wide, and lamination cost a dollar per square foot.
By David Lang (Dlang) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 12:30 am: Edit |
the kinko's in my area charge $10/sq ft for color and $0.50/sq ft for black and white and can do images up to 36" in one direction and however long you want
