For a wacky alternative that's more like modern naval warfare, try Warp 4 plasmas and drones.
During the normal movement sequence every plasma or drone can turn one hex facing then move forwards one hex, sideslip one hex or just move forwards one hex, with the usual rules for impact. They cannot HET.
Then after the first aegis firing pulse every drone and plasma moves one hex straight forwards and if they reach the target hex they impact.
Their effective turn radius is 2, but they only get to turn or slip on their first move of each impulse.
Plasma and drone endurance is read as impulses rather than hexes of movement and they have to give up plasma bolts and possibly scatterpacks.

If you want it to really be like a WW2 battle, try this set of rules (I don't claim authorship, but I honestly cannot remember where I saw them)
1 - No ship can move faster than speed 4.
2 - No ships allowed except for freighters, auxilliary and Wyn aux ships.
3 - Drones, fighters, and plasmas all run normal speed.
4 - No such thing as shields.
