That is where the firing arc-for-more-weapons tradeoff will get the most use.

For those who want a challenge, try dueling the Seige Tug vs. a D7K. Although I'm not sure which side has the harder challenge.

One OL-range slipup and the D7K is in serious, serious pain.

John, while I agree that against bases is where the trade is the best, I don't think "allowing"/arranging ships for this role is good for the fun factor for SFB. It starts the slope towards an "arms race" that eventually leads to munchkinism.

Thus I've been trying to limit ships/weapons that are good base busters (by making them non-historical and or limited via technobabble).

Spinal mounts are way too good as written here - as people have said, they are the perfect base busters.

Think - a spinal mounted Fed NCL. 8 photon, and enough power to load them all while pumping out 6ECCM. It stays at ~R30 and deosn't really need to move much.
Bases just got twice as easy to kill. Even spinal Fed FFs can do it with enough power for 6ECCM (just).

Conversely, the Klingons are disadvantaged, because the DSR on their small ships don't have 30 range (although a spinal D5 is also a very good base-buster).

If this got added, I would like to see a limit on them, both in terms of how many units in a fleet, AND in terms of overall production.

Perhaps spinal mounts could replace other weapon systems (like Special Sensors on scout/SR conversions) but on a 1:2 or 1:4 ratio, not 1:1.

On the other hand, it is the only way I could see a Phaser-4 being mounted on a Size Class 2 or 3 ship; firing arc = row straight ahead, period.

Gary the closest to that (currently:)) is the Phaser M.
