This is only an OK idea in its beginning stages.
Say that a Crusier and Assault Ship are attacking a planet when hordes of auxillary units do a suprise defence ambush. There could be converted liners, Freighters, old ships like Fed Cls, etc. Tell me if this is a bad idea and sorry for developing less before posting.

We have had an F&E case where a Kzinti LAV reacted to a raiding Lyran DNL and won the battle, crippling the DNL. Seeing as this actually happened, and the the LAV's fighters would have to surprise the DNL, you might like to give it a shot (Y169). A couple more auxiliaries supporting the lav (F-AS?) could make the battle a little more fun.

You can pick the terrian. Maybe the DNL had to stop because it detected a hastily put-up minefield?
