For what it is worth, the material I'm working up for Prime Directive: Federation will have some "peaceful exploration" stuff (after all, the book is about the Federation) that should appeal to mainline Trekkers, in addition to the military stuff that appeals to SFBers.

Stacy,SVC, there is such an article from some early gaming magazine (SVC even autographed it!)now I just have to find it (again)...
By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 05:44 am: Edit |
Good to see the exploration aspect will be detailed in PD Federation - I hope that when/if books for similar races (such as the ISC) will have a similar scope!

This sounds like a much more comprehensive guide than the one printed 12 years ago in Captains Log 16.

If anybody wants to help with this project, here are ways you can do it. Please do it in this topic so i can just copy the topic sometime instead of hunting down 50 separate emails.
1. Suggest anything not already mentioned which already exists and should be imported wholesale into the encyclopedia. (One suggestion made by Email was to include all of the input guide articles to help writers, but of course those are on line also.)
2. Ship names. Get the ship name lists down in the miniatures section. Pick a product at random. See if the ship names from that product are in the list. If they are, then great, if not, then let me know what product is missing from the list so I can tackle it during my "work on like whatever dude" time.
2A. At some point, I may figure out a way for people to actually type the ship name input for me. For now, don't worry about it.
3. Time line stuff. I already did the Klingon and Romulan books, by the way, earlier today. I was in a strange mood. Anyway, if there is something missing from the timeline, let me know what it is but please please please do it in the following format:
Year. Actual entry in proper style.
Source of entry on a separate line.
Here's an example.
-Y942 Kahless unites Klinshai into a single empire.
Source: GURPS klingons page 19.
And here is another one.....
-Y941 Kahless gets a new pony named "fluffy".
Source: I made it up. This is part of the book GURPS FAMILY PETS OF THE SFU which I am writing for you; remember the 300 emails from me about this book.
Yes, you can make up stuff if you tell me that you are making it up. I may or may not use it, depending on how it fits.
By posting it in this topic, you save me time checking it because if you get it wrong, somebody else will tell me in a later posting in this topic.
By Michael Powers (Mtpowers) on Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 08:58 pm: Edit |
Posting in this topic also lets everyone know what has been done, so that you don't get 500 people doing ship names.

In fear of saying something wrong, but if you mean the Data for Painting Miniatures topic you posted in November of 2004, it's missing ship names from R7
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 02:37 pm: Edit |
Perfect, just exactly what I need to know, reported just how you should report it!
Does it have R8, R9, and/or R10?
By Jack Andre Bohn (Jbohn) on Monday, June 19, 2006 - 03:00 pm: Edit |
I don't have R8... wait some pages are printed in R9,
Missing names from R8, except the Fed GCA names which are listed as Fed LCA.
Missing names from R9.
Missing names from R10.
That reminds me, missing names from the frignaut article, CL 31

In Putting together a SFU Chronology I'd like to see it so that Alpha and Omega are presented side by side-and perhaps LMC as well. Do it in such a way that new pages can be substituted as we learn more (Such as a Xorkaellian Timeline when that info becomes available and Triangulum chronology when that time comes)
regards. Maybe something like Heinlein Future History chart?

Tell me what you think of something like this...
Make the encyclopedia in a multibook format much like those Brittanicas that you see in garage sales.
However, try a format for each race that is much like a new car brochure at a dealership. Have some high end art showing generic classes from different angles, as well as options (variants), colors (fleet locations) and packages available (escorts, carriers etc..). Start from a timeline or from a hull size and work to the other end of the spectrum.
Each Volumn comprises a single race, including descriptions of ships, descriptions of beings, armaments, typical tactics (gorn anchor, echelons...etc.) and some mind numbing specs on anything already in print.
Yes it would be a large undertaking, but it allows flexiblity for future products to be incorporated.
The main goal... make it a book that large chain book store would want to carry as well as small hobby stores. Attract those trekkies who know all the tidbits from the shows, get kids interested with the great graphics and get new people interested in this Phenomenon call SFB!
By Nick Samaras (Koogie) on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 01:11 pm: Edit |
The problem with that is, who is going to buy the books with the non-Star Trek race? Certainly not the trekkies
By Cristopher Johnson (Nsg2002) on Sunday, October 22, 2006 - 06:20 pm: Edit |
The idea is, get the reader(s) hooked on the "core races" with references to the other races... make them need it to fill in the gaps. If someone is gonna shell out 30 or 40 dollars for a great looking, eye catching cool book on the feds or klinks, and the Lyrans or Hydrans are next to them on the shelf... they should sell themselves. Another thing to think about on this... dont put all the core races in the first few books. If the Encyclopedia is 16 volumns in number for example, the feds would be in #4, the klinks in #7 and the roms in #12. Give the end user gaps to fill with missing volumns, and some of the more anal ones will get them just cause. Others would buy them to truly find out more.

I am currently working on the Index that was last published in CL16 and bringing it up to date through the current CapLog, PD Publication, F&E, and SFB Publications.
Fed Commander will also be included for stuff not published elsewhere but I know the same scenario from SFB to FC can be very different in the terms of ships present and SFB will carry the weight there.

Partially updated SFU Index posted. Updated through CL25 as of posting.

A somewhat related FYI... someone created a Star Fleet Universe Wiki (Wikia.com).
Maybe this is old news but I wanted to point it out as it directly associates itself with SFU. Is the wiki sanctioned or is it someone's personal project?

Where the heck did that chicken video come from?
By R. Brodie Nyboer (Radiocyborg) on Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 04:20 pm: Edit |
Probably some anonymous editor's idea of a joke.
Oddly enough, I know people who think chickens represent the premier subject of humor.

In another topic, the idea came up about the Star Fleet Universe Encyclopedia. It was noted that should such a "document" ever exist, it would include most of the data in PD FEDS, PD KLINGONS, PD ROMULANS, and about 2/3 of the pages from PD CORE.
It was further noted that because you would need to include 136 of the 144 pages of PD FEDS, PD KLINGONS, PD ROMULANS, and 144 of the 200 pages from PD CORE, this would be one very large book, and would probably be a multi-volume book.
At which point it was noted that PD FEDS, PD KLINGONS, PD ROMULANS, are, in fact, already volumes 2, 3, and 4 of the Star Fleet Encyclopedia. It was noted that there would be no real point in removing the game system data as the PD FEDS, PD KLINGONS, PD ROMULANS books are, as a practical matter, 99% identical to the putative Volume 2, Volume 3, and Volume 4 and there are other things to do rather than printing generic versions of those book.
At which point it was noted that if you took PD20M CORE and removed all of the game specific data, that would cut it down from 200 pages to less than 150, the same size as PD FEDS, PD KLINGONS, PD ROMULANS. At which point lots of people started talking about adding stuff to the "non-rpg core book". SVC said no, anything else could go into Volume Zero while "non-RPG core" would become Volume One. Gary Carney asked if we could re-insert a few pages (e.g., Andros, ISC) that were in GURPS but which were deleted from the d20 version for lack of space, and I said sure.
Mike Bennett wanted to discuss what might be in Volume Zero, and I told him to go to this topic and do that.
I could see the NCC list being added, and some "encyclopedic" stuff that I have been wanting to do that nobody really knows about. Someone said that some of the one-page stuff from Captain's Log, and fighter development articles, might be added to Volume Zero, and if anybody wants to point out such items than do go ahead, and do it here.
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 12:12 pm: Edit |
There is so much in development still that it seems to me that this is a product that should wait until the background matures more.
I used to want this product that was started in Captain's Log but will take a new turn with PD material but PD has done a good job so far.
SVC talks on occasion about retirement and I've come to imagine that this would be a product he'd do IN his retirement.
The background book (PD material minus game data) seems fine for those who just want background material but the encyclopedia should be something much more, IMO.
The SFU Encyclopedia should also include data from SFB and F&E as well as PD. There is a product there that could be a truely amazing legacy.
But there is still a lot of untold history and such a book would have holes if done too soon.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 12:14 pm: Edit |
Who says it's just one book?
In a very real sense, you just open a pagemaker file, and when it hits 144 pages you publish it and then open another file.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 12:20 pm: Edit |
Fed NCC list: 9 pages
Name index: 60 pages
Index 19 pages
Gazetteer: 11 pages
That's about 100 pages so far.

That sounds like an argument for a sourcebook for the not-very-major races that don't quite deserve their own book.
Orions, Gorns, maybe. Definitely the Paravians, Hydrans, Vudar.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 02:18 pm: Edit |
Well, planned sourcebooks include:
Orion pirates
Feline Empires (Kzinti, Lyran, WYN)
Gorns (including Paravians)
Tholians (including Seltorians)
So, we have....
R2 Feds = FEDS
R3 Klingons = KLINGONS
R4 Romulans = ROMULANS
R5 Kzintis = part of FELINE EMPIRES
R6 Gorns = GORNS
R7 Tholians = THOLIANS
R8 Orions = ORIONS
R9 Hydran = PRIME or "other"
R10 Andros = "other"
R11 Lyrans = part of FELINE EMPIRES
R12 WYNs = part of FELINE EMPIRES
R13 ISC = "other"
R14 LDR = part of FELINE EMPIRES
R15 Seltorian = part of THOLIAN
R16 Jindarian = "other"
R17 Paravian = part of GORN
R18 Carnivon = could be "other" or "feline empires"
So there could be a sourcebook(s) for "others" after all of the listed ones are done.

Historical Engagements
A listing of historical scenarios to include date and location of battle, specific ships involved, key named personnel, reason for the engagement, and outcome.
This would not be a reprint of all the scenarios. It would not include any special rules or usual scenario specifics.
By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 04:03 pm: Edit |
Michael, When I compiled and updated the SFU Timeline for GPD3, any event that was tracable to a scenario was noted as such. For example, see the various entries for Y155-165 et al.
That may suffice as a starting point for you.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, September 06, 2010 - 04:54 pm: Edit |
Historical battles/scenarios have been added to the timeline, in several itterations, at various times. Probably needs to be done again for products done in the last five or six years.
