This topic will be used now and then when Steve Cole wants to know something. Usually, something that he already should know and just doesn't know. (He's led a life sheltered from popular culture and most non-Mac computer technology.)

Somebody named "Notestine" or something similar to that long ago sent a "brickshelf Gorn" photo to me. I found it amusing and intend to print it as an example of how creative our customers are but would prefer to have your full and correct name.

I am (suddenly) having an issue with the superPC I use at home; it might have been caused by a recent update I did not ask it to do. I click the mouse on the screen on a link and it acts like I clicked it two or three times, with results that are predictably annoying. I tried adjusting the double-click setting all the way up and all the way down and nothing changes. Any ideas?

Fist this I'd do is swap out the mouse (assuming you have a spare) to make sure it's not the mouse itself going bad (or in a good need of a cleaning).

Check the mouse settings, and turn down how sensitive it is.

Check to see if there were any disability settings turned on. I am not sure about Windows but on the Mac there are settings that enable double clicks easily.

Eddie, I did say I had done that already. All the way up, all the way down, no difference. Click the PLUS sign on the browser and open two or three new screens. Click the button for "create new folder" and it creates two or three folders at once.

Zac, I will check, but it’s not a Mac.

Garth, I am on the way to Office Depot. Thanks, buddy! We'll give that a try.

Oh, okay. I see. One more setting to double-check. My Logitech mouse has extra buttons, and I can program any of them (including normal left/right buttons) to do specific things. I have one thumb button set to double-click and the other to 'go back'.

Sometimes a dying battery will cause that.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, June 21, 2021 - 01:53 pm: Edit

Battery? In the mouse? In my flashlight?

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, June 21, 2021 - 02:24 pm: Edit

If it's a wireless mouse, then yes it has a battery. Corded ones do not. Personally, I despise cordless mouse.

Personally gone back to using a corded, Rollerball Mouse, I've had like 20 years....
Have issue now and then with the click, though rollerball still works great...

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, June 21, 2021 - 06:39 pm: Edit

Not wireless.

By John L Stiff (Tarkin22180) on Monday, June 21, 2021 - 09:10 pm: Edit

My old roller ball mouse finally gave out years ago - all they had was wireless replacements. I ended up getting a USB wireless mouse. The mouse talked to the USB and the USB talked to the computer. (Yes my computer is that old - it cannot handle a true wireless mouse.)

Note to Garth: Thanks, the new mouse fixed the issue.

LESSONS LEARNED
Read this and don't make my mistakes.

It should have been obvious that a bad mouse was the path to explore.

I bought a new cord mouse and proceeded to slice and dice the cord getting it out of the package. Be careful and don't just cut through a sheet of cardboard because there could be a cord inside of it.

I had always complained that the mouse cable was too short. The solution was a cordless mouse which I bought on the second trip to Office Depot. Then when installing it I found that the computer was sitting on a loop of mouse cord meaning I always had two more feet of cord.

Computer mice are somewhat like tires on a car: the ride/control is only ever going to be as good as the tires/mouse. :)

Got a number of wireless mice laying around the house somewhere, they just quit...
New batteries did nothing....

By Thomas Mathews (Turtle) on Friday, June 25, 2021 - 02:51 pm: Edit

My issue with mice is that I almost always wear out the left button before anything else on a given mouse.

By Mike Dowd (Mike_Dowd) on Friday, June 25, 2021 - 10:05 pm: Edit

SVC: One could say that once you cut the cord by slicing the cardboard, you had a cordless mouse... ;)

More of a short-tail mouse.

I love my thumb roller ball from Logitech. Have to replace annually...

I am so happy with the new cordless rodent on my home STEAM computer that I may pick one up for the PC I use at work for non-design tasks.
