SVC -

When the time comes to do the podcasts (if they happen), let me know. Audio production is what I do and I'd be happy to help.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 02:19 pm: Edit

You'll have to remind me, Will. I won't remember much by then. You might email Matt and make sure he knows how to find you.

By Will McCammon (Djdood) on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 11:45 pm: Edit

I'll remind you when it comes up. There's other folks pushing you to do it - I personally would rather you spend the time pumping out more game material ;)

If and when it becomes a "let's do it", I'll be around to help.

SVC, here is an idea that isn't really a product but might actually be more helpful to you.

I noticed that you are offering the Captains Log SSD's separately. I would like to suggest that you offer a one line item for a pack of the SSD's so that if some one was to want them all then they'd just order the one product.

I'm not even suggesting a discounted price (although that would be nice) just a product number to order "The Complete Captains Logs SSD Pack".

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, October 06, 2007 - 09:24 am: Edit

That would be something to Email Leanna. I don't have much to do with it. However, I don't think it would work as most people would have some and not want others.

SVC said "since I do want to find something for experimental PDF sales."

SVC, what about a pdf set of "Cardboard Heroes"-type characters for Prime Directive like Dale drew for the Klingon gunboat deckplans?

One set could be Federation crew, another Klingon, Romulan, etc.

If you offered those on RPGNow, the cross-over potential could be HUGE! Trek fans would love something like that, regardless what "brand" of Trek they were playing (Heritage, FASA, Last Unicorn, Decipher, PD, etc.)!

Set 1 could be the Federation- something that every ST RPG gamer has wished for for years. You could use the Klingons that have already been done and maybe add a few more to it for Set 2. That would (seemingly) make a fairly quick and easy test product for the pdf market.

At 5 bucks a pop, it seems like a win/win!!

Heck, why not offer pdf sheets of FC/FE/SFB counters (or is there something potentially nefarious I'm missing there?)

Just an idea that I know I'd like to see!

Lee: Those would mean paying an artist and that would cost enough to require it to be sold as a regular product (and that would just about break even). Without going into details, cardboard heroes is (due to artist costs) about the most expensive product we have ever done and doing it as a low-profit PDF would be impossible. I could just go flush a thousand bucks down the toilet and pretty much accomplish the same thing with a lot less time and trouble.

Drat.

No need to answer here, but what about CGI-rendered images? There are a plethora of CGI-rendered "cardboard hero"-type products on RPGNow going for $3.50 a pop. Those have to be cheaper to "start up" than regular ink-rendered characters.

I realize this isn't a priority. Just trying to help generate some easy cash ;-)

Not really anything I know about (or have time to look into). We'd have to have somebody who had the software and knew how to use it. If you can write up a memo containing useful info (links to such products) and Email it to me, I will forward it to the artists we use.

I have scanned thru the 400+ posts, but didnt see any thing about playing cards with SFB's theme.

What about a Star Fleet battle "card deck"?

I'm not talking about battle forces, What I am suggesting is a regular 52 deck of cards (with a joker or two and instruction card or advertisement)... it seems to me I have heard that there are a number of novelty companies that have the ability to put designs and grapic images on sets of laminated cards.

Pick the four suits from Federation, klingon, Romulan and Gorn...

While many SFB's players might pick up a set or two for fun... non players and Star trek fans might find such a product interesting as well... and if it got non existing sfb's players interested in findout more about ADB and SFB, so much the better!

By Mike Novean (Blackdice) on Friday, November 02, 2007 - 11:53 pm: Edit

I know from reading SVC's comments in the past that the cost of producing the cards is quite high. Sales of regular card decks might not be cost effective unless that is something that Cafepress does.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, November 03, 2007 - 11:59 am: Edit

There are more ideas than time, and this one would be low on the priority list because of low sales and high cost.

Low sales: SFU players want games, not novelties, and non-SFU players have yet to be dragged into the idea of non-game products based on SFU. I think that Trekkers would buy a deck of cards with photos from TNG or DS9 with the Klingons for spades, the Feds for diamonds, the romulans for clubs, and (pick somebody who was on TV, or maybe all of Kirk's girlfriends) for hearts. I don't know that they would pay money for a standard bridge/poker deck which had something vaguely Klingonish on it.

High cost: Cards are expensive to print. Seems to me that the SFBF print run was $10K for 7,000 decks, about twice what we paid for a Captain's Log. That's for top quality cards. You could in theory print regular cards at one of the POD places (the place that will eventually do GHCG for example) but the cost is about $2 per deck and considering what a deck of standard poker cards sells for, there's no way to make money without a crowd of people willing to pay a premium to giggle over Kirk jokes.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Saturday, November 03, 2007 - 12:09 pm: Edit

I'd certainly want SFBF expansions long before a SFU poker deck.

Has anyone ever presented an idea along the lines of ground combat? Not really Risk style, but more like Memoir'44 if you've heard of it. It could be a customizable map so that way the game could have a different set up each time. Maybe use plastic figures to represent Marines and any type of ground vehicles that would be included in the game.

There could also be cards which could have special effects such as "Starship in orbit beams down additional troops" or "Captain orders aerial bombardment". What do you think?

See the topic for Star Fleet Assault.

Thomas, that is here: Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Battles: New Product Development: Star Fleet Assault (Ground Combat)

By Thomas LaMaster (Thomas) on Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 04:31 pm: Edit

Ah OK, sorry about that.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 04:54 pm: Edit

Thomas, no need to apologize. It wasn't until SVC posted that it clicked in my brain where the topic was located!

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 04:54 pm: Edit

No need for appologies, Thomas. It take a while to get settled in here and if you weren't around for the announcement then it's hard to know something exists... and it never hurts to ask.

By Thomas LaMaster (Thomas) on Thursday, November 15, 2007 - 11:39 pm: Edit

Thanks, yeah, it's taken me awhile to adjust to the set-up of this board, though I'm starting to get the hang of it.

How about a "Miniatures Painting Guide" with some articles written by the players? Advice on conversions, kitbashes, making a ship look like different varaiants... more detailed painting guides for all the races etc...it could be in color with photos of miniatures from start to finish :+) or maybe some painting notes could be added to each ship in it's entry for Leanna's Fighting ships...

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 11:31 pm: Edit

In color, it would be too expensive to publish, and I am confident that sales would be low. We try to do that sort of thing on the website for free, and while we don't do enough, we always try to do more. If somebody wants to do a step by step color photo article, we'll put it on the website.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, December 13, 2007 - 11:45 am: Edit

I will offer $20 gift certificates to up to three people who provide me with "photo by photo, step by step" illustrated articles (including detailed text) of modifiying miniatures, and $10 certificates for three people who do that for painting existing minis. Ask me first so I don't get three people painting the same ship. My theory is that you'll just take some photos and write a few words about something you are doing anyway, and get some honor and glory. I'm looking for a dozen clear well-lit photos and clearly-written instructions for each step of the process.

By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Saturday, December 22, 2007 - 07:05 pm: Edit

Has anyone took you up on your offer yet?
