This started as a joke on the 11 Feb 08 blog, a spoof about the "name a star for somebody" commercials that annoy me. It's even on the shopping cart as item 9996 but is clearly a joke.

However, some people say they are actually wiling to pay a few bucks to impress their lady friend.

Leanna says she is ok with it, but doesn't want to rip people off.

We could...

Mail a black and white certificate on parchment paper. This would cost under $5 plus postage.

Have a full color certificate made and charge $10 plus postage.

Email you a color certificate you can print at Kinkos. This could be done for under $5.

Does anybody have a thought or comment?

Yes, please.

So, I owe you guys $5.

If you had a 3-d perspective drawing (from Leanna's Ship registry, or one of Alan Turner's/Geibel's drawings) to slap on the certificate with the person's name clearly shown, it would make it more appealing to the eye (as something someone would buy, frame it and put it on a wall).

Just have a dozen ships done, and be able to add in the person's name as text across the hull, the viola it comes out of the printer.

Of course Giebel has these things saved and it shouldn't be hard to copy the original, change USS Constitution to USS Joe DiMaggio and you are done.

As a joke of course.

EDIT: Of course this should be entry-level photoshop work if you have someone to handle it, so the photo doesn't need to be done by Adam/Ted, just have them do the original ship, then you (as in ADB) add the text in house.

SVC,

If you agree to be my Valentine, I'll pay to have a ship named after you.

You'll have more people interested if they can buy a name for a favorite race as long as they give a "reasonable" sounding name. Subject to your approval of course.

There are lots of other hulls that don't actually have names (AFAIK). Like auxiliaries, police ships, q-ships, etc. And you can charge more if they ask for a specific ship, like a Fed DD or Klingon E4.

This is fun for the Wyn ships because they are all already female names. But to extend this to the whole SFU... no thanks. The current system is best, IMO. I'd rather not see they whole of the SFU background creation eventually sold to the public.

By Michael Lui (Michaellui) on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 01:09 am: Edit

Not the big ships. They are mostly already spoken for. The smaller ships that may only have hull numbers. And they have to have appropriate names for their races empires.

I don't want girlfriend names anywhere but the WYNs. Now, the certificate can say anything you want, but the registry would pretty much make them all WYN Aux cruisers. (Carriers start with S, minesweepers with C, something else with V, some are only viking girl names).

By Jeremy Gray (Gray) on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 09:25 pm: Edit

I don't need one of these. We already have an Orion MR named Ruby Witch.

That covers it. :)

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 09:43 pm: Edit

Jeremy: That would be pertaining to the Phoenix side of her?

By Sean O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 04:43 pm: Edit

If I named a WYN ship after my daughter Colleen, she'd be a minesweeper? That makes no sense. The way she scatters her toys everywhere, she'd be a minelayer.

If the WYNs had any "fast" aux cruisers, I'd pay just to name them Mercedes and Portia. :O

By Mike Curtis (Nashvillen) on Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 09:03 pm: Edit

Minesweepers also lay the mines.

By Glenn Hoepfner (Ikabar) on Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 09:53 pm: Edit

I'm assuming that colleen only lays the mines. The sweeping comes from an entirely different set of unfortunate ships.

My wife said she would want a starship named after her. Her name is Sylvia Celeste. Seems OK for a starship.

I'd pay you for a name of a ship for her.

By Mike West (Mjwest) on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 03:50 pm: Edit

"Sylvia Celeste"? Wow, that'd be a perfect name for a Free Trader or something like that ...

By John Erwin Hacker (Godzillaking) on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 06:01 pm: Edit

If I was to spend the 10 bucks to have a ship named after any lady in my family it would have to be a DRONE ARMED SHIP. Because everyone of the ladies in my family ALWAYS KEPT STICKING IT to us men ..........hehe

"THE GODZILLAKING"

By Tony L Thomas (Scoutdad) on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 06:01 pm: Edit

Inspiration strikes Tony, who has more minis than he knows what to do with...

I'm suddenly thinking of painting one of my Federation pods as the Starliner Pod "U.S.S. Sylvia Celeste and then setting up a demonstration game using miniatures where the Transport Tug has hit a mine and been destroyed - but not before dropping the starliner pod.

Now, all alone - adift in the vastness of space, with nothing in sight except the black hole that's slowly inexorably pulling it to it's doom...

Then the distress beacon is detected, bit who's coming to save her?
Will it be the money hungry Orion Mercenary Captain, who'll steal the supplies and ransom the passengers?
Or will it be the Klingon DSF who's looking for a presumed traitor, and will suspect anyone and everyone on a Federation pod that somehow crossed into Klingon space?
Or will it be the U.S.S. Murfreesboro, swooping in at the last minute to retrieve the passengers and crew from the ravages of the looming event horizon?

Stay tuned, same SFU-channel, same SFU-time.

Man, this could easily develop into a fiction piece for an upcoming CL... DIBS!

Now, don't use my wife's name without my permission guys......

By Tony L Thomas (Scoutdad) on Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 02:38 pm: Edit

I would certainly email you off-list to ask permission, prior to even proceeding with any such plans... but it is a really cool name for a ship!

By Jeff Turner (Turnerco) on Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 04:01 pm: Edit

Thank you for your consideration Tony.

Hello, I just purchased CL:50, SSDs from CL:20,
and have purchased the "Name Your own ship" option
for my mothers birthday, no after my mom made the
purchase, she turned off the computer. Now my problem is that I have no idea if there were any options I have to choose. If so, I would like it named "Christina" and can it possibly be a Klingon
ship of some sort? Thanks for answering my questions.
