Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Company-Conventions-Stores-Ideas: About the Company: Compiling a list of out-of-print products: Archive through September 30, 2009
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, February 27, 2006 - 12:08 pm: Edit

E2 is on the list. I added E1. H2-90 included counters that were added to H1-06 so we don't really need an H2 but might do one anyway.

STAR FLEET UNIVERSE UPDATE LIST
========================================
Many players have asked us to provide them with a list of what products have been updated, and how extensively they were revised. There is no good way to define the extent of revisions, but if you consult the on-line errata sheets you will get a good idea of what changes were fixed and how much you do or do not need the fixed versions. LIST REVISED 27 FEB 06.
========================================
5501 BASIC SET: First printed 1990. Rulebook revised (massively) 1994 and again (massively) 1999. SSD book revised 2000 (several serious changes). Map, counters, charts same as original printing. Most of those which have silver "now published by ADB" stickers are the 1999 version of the rulebook, but some 1994s had this sticker. Cover was replaced with new Geibel art in 2003 and the price was increased. The 19991 resurrection rulebook ran out of stock during 2005 and we began kyocera-printing a new rulebook extracted from the SFB Master Rulebook. Counters are likely to run out of stock in 2006 and will be replaced with new counters done in the Fed Commander Style.
5502 ADVANCED MISSIONS: First printed 1991. Rulebook (massively) revised 1999. SSD book revised (9 ships changed) 1994. Counters same as original. If it has a silver "now sold by ADB" sticker, it is the 1999 version. Cover was replaced with new Geibel art in 2003 and the price was increased.
5620 CADET TRAINING HANDBOOK: Printed in 1996. No revisions to date, although this product is itself a revision of the earlier Cadet Training Manual and the even earlier Introduction to SFB. Out of stock. Original plan was to leave it out of stock and just put it on the web site but given our new internal printing capability we may re-release it ... or not.
5624 TACTICS MANUAL: First printed 1987. Captain’s Edition printed 1992 with major revisions. New edition in 2000 corrects several minor errors. The new 2000 edition has a different cover (cgi people standing around a hologram display).
- - - - -
5715 CAMPAIGN DESIGNER’S HANDBOOK: First printed 1996. The 2000 printing changed only the publisher information page.
5601 MODULE C1 NEW WORLDS I: First printed 1991. Rulebook seriously revised 1994. SSD book slightly revised 1999. If it has a silver "now sold by ADB" sticker it is the new version. A new cover was done in 2002 and if it has the new cover (with ADB not TFG) it is the new version.
5602 MODULE C2 NEW WORLDS II : First printed 1991. Rulebook seriously revised 1994. SSD book slightly revised 1999. If it has a silver "now sold by ADB" sticker it is the new version.
5603 MODULE C3 NEW WORLDS III: First printed 1993. Still in stock. SSD book slightly updated in Aug 2004.
5616 MODULE C4 FLEET TRAINING CENTERS: First printed 1995. No revisions.
7101 MODULE E1 printed in 2000 and when it ran out we sold hundreds of photocopies. No revisions. Taken off sale in 2003 to be replaced in Module C5.
7102 MODULE E2 TRIANGULUM GALAXY: 64 Page, B&W cover, available through stores but few carry it. Printed 2001. In stock. No revisions. Special Countersheet #1, a separate item, provides counters for this product.
5614 MODULE F1 JINDARIANS: the 1994 edition had a 48-page rulebook, 48-page SSD book, and 216 counters. During 2000-2002 we sold a few photocopies to those who wanted to complete their collections. These photocopies had original covers and counters, which were available in good supply. In April 2005, we released a new edition of F1 with a 52-page SSD book (added shipyard ships from CL16 and bombers) and a revised rulebook. The books say 2005 in several places and the original TFG cover has a silver ADB sticker.
- - - - - -
5604 MODULE J FIGHTERS: First printed 1991. Rulebook seriously revised 1996. SSD book has not been revised.
5619 MODULE J2 ADVANCED FIGHTERS: first printed in 2002. No revisions.
5605 MODULE K FAST PATROL SHIPS: First printed 1991. Rulebook somewhat revised 2000. SSD book somewhat revised 2000. If it has a silver "now sold by ADB" sticker it is the new version.

5622 MODULE T TOURNAMENT BATTLES: The new edition in 2000 is a total overhaul of the earlier versions. It has a new cover with ADB logos and would be all but impossible to mistake the older versions for the 2000 version.
5624 MODULE TR: 64 Page, B&W cover, available through stores but few carry it. Printed 2001. In stock. No revisions.
5612 MODULE X1: THE X-SHIPS: First printed 1994. Still in stock. No revisions.

4501 MODULE H1 MEGAHEX: large colorful 1" counters. First version was printed in about 1990 (it had 80 counters and a large-size map) and is long since out of stock. Second version printed in Nov 2005 (320 counters and no map, uses the maps from Module W or Fed Commander) and remains in stock (it’s counters are used in Federation Commander) without revisions.
Xxxx MODULE H2 MEGAHEX 2: an expansion of H1 printed in 1990 adding three sheets of counters. Long since out of print, the races and ships covered by this product were incorporated into the 2005 version of H1.

5609 MODULE R4: REINFORCEMENTS FOR ROMULANS, GORNS, ISC, THOLIANS: First printed 1992. SSD book revised 2001. Some exist with silver ADB stickers with both the 1992 and 2001 SSDs. Rulebook revised 2002.
5610 MODULE R5: BATTLESHIPS: First printed 1992. Rulebook seriously revised 1994. SSD book somewhat revised 1994. If it has the silver ADB sticker it is the new version, but many without this sticker are also new versions.

5006 FEDERATION & EMPIRE: First published in 1986. Rulebook seriously changed in 1989 and minor changes in 1990. Massive revision in 1993 to produce the Deluxe Edition, which had a new rulebook, a new map (nothing changed, it’s just nicer) and new charts. The 2000 edition rulebook was added in September 2000. If it has a TFG box, it is NOT the new edition. Those with ADB boxes might include the 1993 or 2000 rulebooks. All 1993s in distributor stocks were upgraded in Sept 2001. In March 2004, the ABCD counters were replaced by new sheets designated ONE and TWO. I realize that no reveisions were made to the actual X1 module since it hasn't been reprinted but it might be helpful to some to add a note about the rules revisions in Captains Log.
============
5612 MODULE X1: THE X-SHIPS: First printed 1994. Still in stock. No revisions. (NOTE: The X1 rules were seriously revised for playtest in Captains Log 23 and on this web site.)
============

I don't recall exactly where the new X1 rules are... perhaps in eratta?

By Jessica Orsini (Jessica) on Monday, February 27, 2006 - 03:17 pm: Edit

If it's any help, Steve, I do recall that Subspace News #4 presented various Alliance maulers (including the Tholian War Cruiser Mauler (R7.933), which I think is the only item that hasn't been reprinted elsewhere).

By Jessica Orsini (Jessica) on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 11:11 am: Edit

As luck would have it, I just tripped across some of my old Subspace News issues, and hunted down info on the rest:

SSN#1, March 1994: Early Years Hydran preview.

SSN#2, June 1994: Frax Submarine preview.

SSN#3, July 1994: Fliver preview.

SSN#4, August 1994: Alliance conjectural Maulers: (R5.932) Kzinti Medium Cruiser Mauler, (R6.922) Gorn Heavy Destroyer Mauler, (R7.933) Tholian War Cruiser Mauler, and (R9.933) Hydran Light Mauler Cruiser.

SSN#5, February 1995: Triaxian preview.

SSN#6:, spring 1995: Britanian, Canadi'en, and Barbarian preview.

Just found a place that has a bunch of out-of-print stuff including CL#1, CL#3, Commander's Ed. stuff, SFB dice, and more!

Regarding Steve Cole's update list above: After getting my old rules out of a box, I find that I have not retained many of the covers. So, for example, when reading "5602 MODULE C2 NEW WORLDS II : First printed 1991. Rulebook seriously revised 1994. SSD book slightly revised 1999. If it has a silver "now sold by ADB" sticker it is the new version.", I can not tell if it has the silver sticker. I see that the books themselves say "Copyright 1991 Amarillo Design Bureau". Does this mean that I have a 1994+ version?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, May 08, 2006 - 11:20 am: Edit

Look on the bottom of any page. If it says "copyright 1991" it's the 1991 version. If it says "copyright 1991, 1994" it's the 1994 version.

Since the silver stickers were not applied until 1999, you "old rules in a box" are probably (just guessing) pre-99. If they were in a copy sold between 94 and 99, they would have been the 94 edition and would not have had a silver sticker.

Was the 1986 F&E called Federation Space at the time?

By Jeff Laikind (J_Laikind) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 12:57 am: Edit

Federation Space was the 1981 strategic game. F&E 1986 underwent a design change for the 1989 version, which affected a number of mechanics.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 09:51 am: Edit

Who is Stephen G. Wilcox? I'm pretty sure SVC designed that game.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 09:56 am: Edit

Wilcox designed Federation space. I designed Federation & Empire. While they cover the same ground, they are radically different games.

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 10:09 am: Edit

Well I'll be. I have Fed Space somewhere and I never noticed that.

Different? I'll say.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 10:23 am: Edit

Fed space as done during a period of time that TFG-2 and I were not on speaking terms. The horrible failure of that game design and the rejection of the game by the marketplace (thousand of copies went into the dumpster, and wholesalers were returning it wanting money back) led to TFG-2 resuming diplomatic relations with ADB. It also led to one of the most bizarre contracts in gaming history, which gave ADB total control over the Star Fleet Universe and specified in one entire paragraph that Federation Space had to be dropped from the product line and never reprinted.

By Roger Rardain (Sky_Captain) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 04:19 pm: Edit

So it's a collectible item, then? :O

By Peter A. Kellerhall (Pak) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 10:57 pm: Edit

Does ADB now own Fed Space rights?

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 11:00 pm: Edit

I don't about that. I think the game would need to be at least good.

I stayed away from early F&E because Federation Space was a let down.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, April 27, 2007 - 11:30 pm: Edit

Yes, we do own Fed Space, and have no intention of doing anything with it. (Other than trying really hard to forget all about it.)

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, September 27, 2009 - 04:14 pm: Edit

A player asked if we could find him copies of some old out of print stuff. (A partial list is below.) He seemed to think that we obviously had readily available copies and plenty of time to scan them. We don't have copies (at least not that we can find) but we do have Eric who can (and has) scanned and uploaded tons of stuff, and Eric has uploaded tons of stuff that people have found and scanned for us.

So, if you're looking for an out of print SFB product, ask us here. If we have a copy and can scan it, we will do so (and either put it in the new PDF store or just upload it free, depending on what it is). And if we don't have a copy, maybe somebody else can find one for us.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, September 27, 2009 - 04:20 pm: Edit

Some of the requested old products include

Starletters (We may have copies of a few of these somewhere, but it would take days to find them and we're too busy to look. If any turn up, we'll scan them and do something with them.)

Star Fleet Times Volume I: We never had copies.

Star Fleet Times Volume II: Bruce did these, often including stuff we sent him. Some have been uploaded. We might or might not have copies of others, at least some of them. I'll ask Petrick if he knows where the box is and then ask him to give them to Eric to scan. Then we can decide what to do to make them available.

Old Painting Guides: All the ones we can find are already on the site, on the minis page. If anybody has one we don't have, send us a scan please.

Module P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6: we might or might not have electronic copies or hard copies (see above, no time to hunt, but if we dumb luck into them, or somebody has a copy they can scan (don't send it without asking first, in case we find it), we'll make them available somehow), but all of the material was used in other products.

Subspace news: I don't think we have hard copies or computer copies, but if we stumble on them (or somebody finds them), we'll find a way to make them available.

AoG Packs: I don't think we have hard copies or computer copies, but if we stumble on them (or somebody finds them), we'll find a way to make them available.

If anybody has a copy of any of the above, Email me and we'll discuss whether we still need it and how to get it and then Leanna and I will figure out how to make it available.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, September 27, 2009 - 05:00 pm: Edit

Petrick walked into my office with a box of random stuff (some starletters, some SFTs, some other junk) which he said had turned up in various boxes he (and, supposedly, I) went through at various times in the past. I will discuss this with Eric on Tuesday, or maybe Thursday, since he has to do covers on Tuesday.

I can vaguely remember that, at one time, we had a whole stack of "boxes of junk" in the warehouse. I went through them, threw a lot of stuff away, put the SFTs and other such things in one box, and repacked what was left in fewer boxes.

While I agree that a lot of what was in P6 has been published formally elsewhere, not everything has. In fact, not everything *can* be, as it is intentionally outside the rules proper. Just to be specific, here is the list of items in P6 that are still, to the best of my knowledge, only in P6.
- Megaphasers
- Megaphotons/Miniphotons*
- High Energy Deceleration
- Drag Space
- Hispaniolans (DN, CA, DW, DW-variants)
- Proton Torpedo (both Hispaniolan version and "vanilla" version)
- Flivver DN, CW, DW-variants
- Deltan DN, DW, DW-variants, FF
- Britanian CW, DW, DW-variants, FF
- Canadi'en CA, CW, DW, DW-variants**
- Frax X-rules and CCX, DWX, SWX

[*] I understand some form of these are in Omega. But I am referring to just "regular" versions.
[**] Petrick is working on these ships for the website. Looks very nice!

My point in all of this is that, unlike other P-modules, P6 does in fact have several items that haven't been published yet. Nor, quite frankly, can the published as there isn't really anywhere to put them. The non-C4 related material could easily fit into SSJ#3, but I have gotten the impression that SSJ#3 isn't terribly likely. And, based on the vote that included Y2 and X1R, C4R just isn't likely to happen either. How to best put that data out there, of course, is a totally different issue.

I would be interested in a copy of the Blackfoot pass map - I know you can mark it out with counters, but it's not the same

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 - 04:35 pm: Edit

Step One complete: I opened the dusty box of "stuff we found when cleaning out boxes of junk" and found:

Mail Order Bonus #2.

SubSpace News #2, #3, and #4.

Starletter #23, #24, #26, #28, #70, #86, #88, #90, #91.

Star Fleet Times Volume 2: #1-#6, #8-#11, #13, #15-#18, #21-23, #27-#30, #32, #34, #41-#42, #44-#50.

I have emails from people who have some of the missing stuff.

The next step is to check the site itself and see if any of this stuff is already uploaded.
