Well, I do not (never did, never will) consider anything in the R section to be "something that needs to be in the RULEbook".

There are a lot of one-off cases where it'd be tough for me to argue against. A few areas, though, I think I could make a solid case for. Well, for example:
- DEFSATs
- Ground Bases

These do have special rules relative to them, and they aren't "unit/ship specific". There are dozens of different types of small and medium ground bases scattered around a half dozen or so products for all races. It makes a good case for the rules relative to them belonging in the rulebook (especially given that we DO have rules for 'large ground bases' in the rulebook, just not 'small/medium ground bases').

In any case, as I mentioned, I really care little which way the solution to this goes, I'd just like to have all the rules for the R-section stuff in SOME centrally located place.

I suspect that Petrick will generate some kind of "supplement" compiling these "rules". He is a river to his people.

I'd buy that in a heartbeat!

Xander,

It might help if you consolidated. I own all the products. I keep all the non-alpha stuff with their separate rules, so if I bring those rules, I have the. (I've got a binder for Omega and one for "all others"). All of the R sections for all the alphas fit tightly, but fit in a 1-1 1/2 binder which I leave in my trunk, just in case.

My stack is:
v1 rules
v2 alpha r sections
v3 scenarios (big binder)
v4 omega
v5 non alpha/omega
v6 alpha ssds thru tholian (big binder)
v7 alpha ssds Orion on
v8 all non-alpha ssds (incl. Omega)

I've found this layout let's me carry what's needed without what's not as best as possible.

SSDs I've scanned all of, so that takes no effort to move around (just a thumb drive with the files, and a printer on-location somewhere...since we usually play at the office or one of our houses, not an issue). As to rules, I only bring:
- Master Rulebook
- Module G3 Annexes

...then, I've got a counter tray that fits all the necessary hull types (I ignore the 'variant' counters - two or three for each 'hull type' is all you really need), a few dice boxes, impulse cards from Module A+, damage allocation cards, the few maps, and that's it. Whole thing - everything you need to play SFB - fits into a regular laptop bag, easily.

With the exception, of course, of the R-section rules that would require toting around the entire R-section binder (like you, I've put all scenarios and all R-sections in binders, each about 2" thick at this point. IE., on their own, each almost as large as all the other SFB stuff I carry around, combined!)

@Xander - Did you get a license or something to scan all that stuff? It's a great idea...just wondering if it's legal...

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, June 01, 2010 - 10:19 am: Edit

What you do with your material as long as it never leaves the privacy of your house (i.e., you don't give it to your friends, you don't put it on the Web for easy reference, you don't "torrent" it, you don't sell it, etc.) is your business. Technically, scanning the material is illegal and if you ever get caught for doing something else illegal, they'll pile multiple copyright charges on top of whatever they got you for (and the fine PER INSTANCE is in the thousands of dollars). However, we are not going to police your computer.

By Xander Fulton (Dderidex) on Tuesday, June 01, 2010 - 11:35 am: Edit

It's a good thing I never do anything 'illegal'.

Jean, as a minor form of correction - we are specifically referring to the SSD sheets (IE., ship diagrams), here, NOT rules, which ADB does specifically give users the right to make copies of. Per A3.2:

Quote:

Since you must write on these forms to play the game, you will have to obtain copies of them. You might wish to use photocopies or have a local quick printer run off a hundred copies of your favorite ship.
...
Purchasers of this game have the permission of the publisher to produce, by any convenient means, copies of the SSD sheets, Energy Allocation Forms, and movement charts for their own private use (and the use of their opponents). Reproduction for sale or in publication is NOT authorized.

(Emphasis mine)

I think you'd find that if you give someone the permission to make a copy of something, whether they do it electronically or physically-via-electronic-means, the law does not have much opinion. Distributing it, of course, is a different matter entirely. But, after giving someone permission to make limited copies of it in the first place, that does allow digital copies, as well. And, again, this is only relevant to the SSD books...the rules definitely have no such note. And, as clearly indicated, only for private use, and use of one's opponents (so, no, I'll never be distributing these or posting them anywhere).

Suggestion, when you start doing more pdfs on e23 you should offer some of the website freebie as freebie pdf through e23. It is possiblt that some of the potential customer at e23 don't visit the website as often as the die hard, just as the face book fans are different from the bbs fans and the Forum fans are different. The first ones I would suggest are the cadet materials for SFB and the First Mission for FC. Now if only there was a intro to Fed and Empire type pdf.

By Terry O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Sunday, June 06, 2010 - 12:11 am: Edit

Shawn's idea seems like a good one... I know that SJGames gives away .pdf's of its GURPS Lite introductory GURPS rulebook on e23. If First Missions is not being used as a freebie to capture email addresses, then making it available on e23 makes sense.

How about a SFU dice game? Similar to SJG Zombie Dice. One possibility, the dice could have a ship on two sides, an Empire symbol on three sides and an explosion on the other. The premis is this, the players are the "Masters" and they are trying to collect different ships or a certain number of ships, if a ship is rolled, you acquire a ship for your collection, if the Empire symbol is rolled the ship escapes and you can try again, and if an explosion is rolled the ship self destructs and the crew escapes and you lose your prize. Three explosions and you lose your turn. I do not know how close the mechanic could or would be to Zombie Dice and it would be okay to use. Release two different kinds of sets, one with Federation and some of the other races, and a second one with Klingon, Romulan and some of the other races. Would be nice also if the dice had a number on them so they could be used for regular games also. Any other thought or ideas for such an animal?

We looked into doing dice and could never find a source that produced good enough dice, in reasonable quantites, and cheap enough for us to re-sell through wholesalers.

This sort of thing makes me wish we were selling twice as much stuff. I'd have somebody like Ken Burnside working here who would do nothing but "new short-term projects" like this one. I just don't have time to run this down and have no confidence that there is a pot of anything at the end of this rainbow, assuming I could even find a rainbow.

By Terry O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Sunday, July 25, 2010 - 12:36 am: Edit

Michael Oliver, if you are looking for 8" x 11" hex paper, or large rolls of hex paper, check out www.gamingpaper.com

By Michael H.Oliver (Mholiver) on Sunday, July 25, 2010 - 07:50 am: Edit

Thanks

Another you could use is:

But note this paper is not numbered.

I got a program I can make 8x11....but looking for large size (like the size of F&E or larger)

By Michael H.Oliver (Mholiver) on Monday, July 26, 2010 - 08:35 am: Edit

http://www.starfleetgames.com/sfb/sfin/Hex_Map_4230_numbered.pdf it still up and running.....A Company years ago made them and they are very large and cost I think $10 for 5 sheet ( and now the cost would be possible $30 or + )....They had hex with out number and both side and I think one side 25-30mm and the over size was smaller.. That is what Im really looking for............mholiver

By Terry O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Monday, July 26, 2010 - 02:36 pm: Edit

The gaming paper rolls are really huge. But those are 1" un-numbered hexes intended for rpg's so might not be what you need.

By Michael H.Oliver (Mholiver) on Monday, July 26, 2010 - 04:05 pm: Edit

You can find 1" and over (hex size)....But not under 1".....very rare to find

By Phil Shanton (Mxslade) on Monday, July 26, 2010 - 08:35 pm: Edit

E23 has a feature called library, it remembers what you purchased and let's you redownload it.

By Terry O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 - 03:09 am: Edit

Yup, just remember to be logged in to e23 before you order so it is added to your library of orders.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 - 10:31 am: Edit

As Phil and Terry said, once you buy it from e23, you can always get another copy free. There's another feature. Let's suppose that I misspelled Xander Fulton's name. We could make a correction, and upload the corrected file, and you'd be able to download that corrected file for free.

I have not regretted any of the downloads I have purchased from e-23. They have a great service with lots of cool stuff to check out. You can also have it set to automatically send you an e-mail if there is a free updated posted for something you have purchased.
