Captain's Log #51 Now Available from Multiple Sources

"Exploration is a valid and important mission, and many in Star Fleet (and the government) consider it their true and primary mission or their highest calling."

Released in May 2016, Captain's Log #51 supports Star Fleet Battles, Federation Commander, A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Starmada, Prime Directive, Star Fleet Battle Force, Star Fleet Marines, and Federation & Empire. "Night Hounds" by Jon Berry is about an Orion cargo ship that is hired by the Romulans to make a delivery to the Gorn Neutral Zone. Little did they know they had hired a secret Orion Pirate special ops ship!

The rest of the History section includes "NCC-1821 USS Sakharov: Voyages of Discovery" by Gary Carney, which is the history of the Sakharov and her many discoveries including a voyage to the Magellanic Cloud and, after that, to the Omega Sector. The Lyrans hire a team to recover someone in "Survivor" by Dan Ibekwi. Jean Sexton discovered a new technology, "The Astroscooter." "Dark Gaming" pokes gentle fun at the staff at Amarillo Design Bureau.

As is usual, Communications is designed to inform readers about the company's activities. After Action reports are on A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Deluxe Edition, the revised Federation & Empire Fighter Operations, Klingon Master Starship Book, and various revisions of older Star Fleet Battles books. The company answers 10 questions about its operations. The Input Guide is designed to help writers and other people submitting material get their ideas into print. There are further questions ACTASF. "The Sound of Battle" is a filk song. This section is rounded out with staff awards and other information about the company’s plans.

There's a page of Command Notes. There is a guide to close-range combat. There are battlegroups with opposing players trying to destroy an enemy or assigned to protect the base. The Command Note is about planetary assaults. Finally, there are three new scenarios. One of those is for the cover story. Another is for the battlegroup situation. The third is based on a battle from the cover story. The final one is after the Klingons decided the Seltorian forces needed to be "neutralized."

This issue includes four scenarios for Star Fleet Battles. SL342 Mobile Bases is the battlegroup scenario. SL343 Incident at Hakatuka is the scenario for the cover story. SL344 A Sword Short has a confrontation between Kzinti starships and Klingon and Lyran gunboats. SL345 A Rock and a Hard Place has Seltorians facing Jindarians.

Captain's Log #52 Now Available from Multiple Sources

He realized that his advice to Ti'Nay Blakem had been unnecessary. The young Alpha-Centauran already knew about stabbing others in the back.

Released in March 2017, Captain's Log #52 supports Star Fleet Battles, Federation Commander, A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Starmada, Prime Directive, Star Fleet Battle Force, Star Fleet Marines, and Federation & Empire. "Escape from Xylad" by Michael Bennett is about an Orion snatch and grab of a major crook who failed to pay his franchise fees. However, the Federation Police and Star Fleet both respond to the kidnapping.

The rest of the History section includes the history of the Federation's heavy cruisers written by researcher John Sickels. Rounding out the section are two short stories told from the viewpoint of someone who mistakes the Amarillo Design Bureau's offices for a bed-and-breakfast makeover location and ADB's receptionist who thinks the designer is a new game blogger/playtester.

As is usual, Communications is designed to inform readers about the company's activities. After Action reports are on the Romulan Master Starship Book, various card packs for Federation Commander, Prime Directive PD20 Modern Supplement, the PDFs SFU Coloring Book #1 and Women of the Zombie Apocalypse short story, and the Starline 2400 release of the Klingon D7K. The company answers 10 questions about its operations. It also explains playtesting materials and how it defines materials that are playtested. The Input Guide is designed to help writers and other people submitting material get their ideas into print. There are questions on high energy turns and ship design. "Drones, Drones, Drones" is a filk song. There is information on the future of metal miniatures. The communications section is rounded out with staff awards.

Federation Commander has information on future plans and rules for ground combat. There's a page of Command Notes. There is a guide to close-range combat. There are battlegroups with opposing players trying to rescue a group while preventing the opposing side from doing the same. The Command Notes are about Andromedan power absorber panels and Tholian patrol corvettes supporting Tholian webs. Finally, there are four new scenarios. One of those is for the cover story. Another is for the battlegroup situation. The third uses the ground combat rules. The final one also uses the ground combat rules in conjunction with a Coalition fleet facing a Federation squadron.

This issue includes five scenarios for Star Fleet Battles. SL346 Escape from Xylad is the scenario for the cover story. SL347 Extraction Perilous is the battlegroup scenario. SL348 A Whale of a Problem focuses on a prospecting freighter driving off a herd of alunda. SL349 A Flame in the Deep pits Andromedans and a Juggernaut squadron. SL350 Monitor in the Attack has a Federation monitor discover an Orion base station and a small Orion pirate squadron.

The Star Fleet Battles tactics include a page of term papers. The battlegroup section has 12 confrontations between two empires, each assigned to docking to a commercial base for a rescue while preventing the other side from accomplishing the same mission. The Magellanic primer focuses on the Jumokians.

Database articles include an article on the alunda. There are guidelines to convert Gorn ships to various empires' technologies and vice versa. The rules for the Zosman Marauders are updated. There are eight pages of Ask Admiral Vanaxilth. The section is rounded out with proposals, a proposal for Klingons to have diplomatic gunboats, and answers to background questions.

The Venues include Star Fleet Warlord, SFB Online, Play by E-Mail, Star Fleet Battle Force, Starmada, Star Fleet Marines, and Galactic Conquest. Prime Directive explores the Yeney'vn system and the Rovillians of the ISC. Star Fleet Marines has a new scenario. Starmada Unity is introduced. Juggernauts are introduced to Star Fleet Battle Force, and there are some tactics notes for that game. A Call to Arms: Star Fleet has a preliminary look at WYN ships and some tactics notes.

Federation & Empire gets its own proposals, Q&A, and "Why" questions. There is a page and a half of Tactical Notes. Rules for playing scenarios during the Middle Years era are introduced. (6LH) Uneasy Lies the Head is a Lyran civil war situation.

New ships for Star Fleet Battles include some general ships: Jumbo Armed-Freighter, Heavy Armed-Freighter, and Smasher Large Security Skiff; Romulan FarHawk-E Division Control Ship, FarHawk-C Heavy Scout Cruiser, GryphonHawk-J Heavy Assault Cruiser, GryphonHawk-C Heavy War Scout Cruiser, Workboat, Survey Boat, and Recovery Boat; Orion GhostHawk, Lyran Local Defense Light Cruiser, Local Defense Destroyer, and Panther-T Light Transport Tug; Seltorian Advanced Technology Light Cruiser; and some Omega ships: Kholigahr Early Command Cruiser, Trobrin Early Command Cruiser, and Zosman Fence Cruiser and Syndicate Base. Federation Commander gets a Free tanker and commando cruisers for the Klingons (D6G), Romulans (Commando Eagle), and Federation. A Call to Arms: Star Fleet gets WYN 100-class Frigate (Kzinti-built) and Mako-class War Destroyer, Federation Mars-class Battleship, and Klingon SD7 Warhatchet-class Strike Cruiser. Starmada gets the Federation Eagle-class Fast Cruiser and Texas-class Light Cruiser and Klingon D5W Soulkiller-class Battlecruiser and F5 Fury-class Frigate.

Supports Federation Commander, Star Fleet Battles, Federation & Empire, Prime Directive, Star Fleet Battle Force, SFB Galactic Conquest, Starmada, A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Star Fleet Marines, and Star Fleet Warlord.

Captain’s Log #53 Now Available from Multiple Sources

“Your objective is to find a way for us to take control of Adanerg that does not violate the Organian Treaty.” -- Klingon Brigadier Grosk

Join us for Captain’s Log #53 and see what happens in “Practice to Deceive.” Adanerg lies in the Neutral Zone between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Both sides want the planet; the Klingons vow to eliminate the Federation “nest of spies” by sending their own spies, backed by Marines. As Sir Walter Scott wrote, “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”

Captain's Log #53 includes information for all our games, including updates, new ships, information about “space trucks” and customizing civilian ships, a first contact story, information about the ISC and the Bureau of Inquisition, and new scenarios.

Star Fleet Battles: This game gains three new scenarios (the fourth one is a repeat of Space Hockey), information on mind-control plants, Aurora Update, Proposals Board, Ask Admiral Vanaxilth, Battle Groups, Term Papers, Platinum Victory by Bill Schoeller, and new ships: free minelayer; Federation old survey cruiser; Fralli cruiser (the USS Powerista); Gorn advanced destroyer, heavy destroyer heavy fighter carrier, medium cruiser escort, and frigate escort; LDR police flagship, heavy police flagship, commando destroyer and commando war cruiser; and five Omega ships (Federal Republic D7 battlecruiser, D6 battlecruiser, F5L frigate leader, F5 frigate, and Lyran light cruiser).

Federation Commander: You will find five new scenarios, Battle Group tactics by players, and a preview of rules for X-ships. To support the new rules, there are X-destroyers for the ISC, Gorns, Romulans, and Hydrans. Other X-destroyers have appeared in various issues of Communique; there is a list of those included.

Federation & Empire: This game has Tactical Notes, Q&A, revised rules for special raids, and a new scenario -- the Federation against everyone.

Starmada: A preview of rules for hellbore cannons and beta rules for Andromedan weapons are included. New ships include the Hydran Tartar and Rhino Hunter and the Andromedan Intruder and Cobra.

A Call to Arms: Star Fleet has an update on the release schedule (hint: it will move much faster now) and battleships for the Federation and Klingons.

And there are still more articles: Starline miniatures, Star Fleet Awards, Command the Future, Input Guide, Galactic Conquest, Prime Directive, Star Fleet Marines (wild animal packs), and the mind-control plant special event card for Star Fleet Battle Force.

Supports Federation Commander, Star Fleet Battles, Federation & Empire, Prime Directive, Star Fleet Battle Force, SFB Galactic Conquest, Starmada, A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Star Fleet Marines, and Star Fleet Warlord.

The colorized SSDs from this issue are sold separately; the Supplemental File (which includes background information) is free.

Could you maybe put the Module TR: Tournament Reference book up as a PDF on Wargame Vault?

By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Thursday, December 12, 2024 - 06:21 pm: Edit

+1 pretty please for Module TR. Even better if it could be updated to 2012 rules and ships.

By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Thursday, December 12, 2024 - 06:39 pm: Edit

Any plans as to when the outstanding older "master rulebook" related modules will be published as e-books please?
Specifically: F1, F2, J2, K, X1, Y1
I have upgraded most of my collection to e-book now, but these are still paper only.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, December 12, 2024 - 06:50 pm: Edit

We cannot release anything as a PDF unless we update it, and it takes two or three months to update any product. Y1 and K are in line for updating next.

By Stephen G. Parry (Mutant) on Thursday, December 12, 2024 - 06:54 pm: Edit

Is there any grunt work on this kind of thing that could offloaded to skilled volunteers, in exchange perhaps for product?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, December 12, 2024 - 09:19 pm: Edit

What can be offloaded already has been.
