Headline today: Sophomore arrested in New Hanover High bathroom with knives
Gives a new feeling to what Leanna may want to have in her bathroom. Knives, guns, who knows what!
(Obviously someone needs a proofreader!)

Proofreader needed at AP. First sentence of a story: A once-cent copper coin from the earliest days of the U.S. Mint in 1793 has sold for a record $1.38 million at a Florida auction.

Even my own profession is not immune to not thinking.
Film: Fright night. Rating: R. Subject heading in the original Blu-ray/DVD combo record: Vampires -- Juvenile films.
This is in an international database. I would think that an "R" rated movie is, by rating, not for young children.
(sigh) Changed to Vampires -- Drama.

Proofreader needed at AP:
"Google for several years agreed to censor its search results in China to gain better access to the country's vast population, but stopped that practice two years after engaging in a high-profile showdown with Chain's government."
Or... a Freudian slip???

Children being "wary" and children being "weary" are not at all the same thing. Nor are "wandering" on the moon and "wondering" on the moon the same. I'm not quite sure what a "freighted" animal is, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the same thing as a"frightened" one. Also I am pretty sure that a damaged "loom" wouldn't be on a beach and have "gooed-up" feathers. What makes the latter so sad is that the writer of the question felt compelled to add (bird) after "loom."
And all of these mistakes (and more) were on 15 pages of six questions. One question was so bad that none of us could decipher what was being asked.

Even the government has CCS:
Some spotters relay reports from their home or business while other more adventurous volunteers Brave the elements and try to get as close to the storm as possible.
And the ellipsis is not a substitute for a comma or whatever:
Many other groups participate in the sky warn program... including law enforcement agencies... fire departments... utility companies... Rescue squads... and the news media. In some areas... individual citizens are trained as spotters... and are asked to relay their reports to the National Weather Service. Spotters are a vital link in the warning process... and it is important to have as many trained spotters in each County as possible.
Brain now hurts.

"IDG News Service - An Oregon man has been convicted of seven courts of wire fraud for helping thousands of people steal Internet service, the U.S. Department of Justice said."
What SI prefix is "court" slang for?

So I am working on my Cataloging and Classification class today, and the readings for this week as provided by the Professor's online syllabus direct me to the Classification and Shellfishing Manual in cataloger's desktop. Gotta love autocorrect, that should be Shelflisting of course...

I have heard from Jason, so nothing too terrible has happened to him.
My dear FEAR, next time for a simple question from Jason, just deprive him of dark chocolate. I would make it ten weeks -- one week per word. For the smile at the end, I get to pick a ship of my choice from his next F&E game at Origins and I get to pick it when it is visiting in space other than its own so the cover story can be that it found its way into a wormhole that ended in a pocket universe.
Petrick, the vibration you felt was because I saw a picture of a sign offering "Congradulations" to the winners of a spelling bee. And because I got the questions for the next Battle of the Books.

Editor/Teacher needed.
First sentence: Main character #1 lives in NC.
Second sentence: Main character #2 is in the Army in Louisiana.
Third sentence: They argue.
Second paragraph: Character #2 pounds on the bathroom door that she is currently behind.
Nowhere in this little story does it say that it happened in the past or if character #2 were home. My guess is this is in the past as character #2 drives character #1 to school and then walks away from her.
Then there are misused words ("he stammered into the bathroom"), "interesting" punctuation ("There was a girl named, Elizabeth, who..."), or strange capitalization.
What really upsets me is this was a class assignment (all sent in one envelope from the school) and apparently the teacher didn't see these issues.

And another cataloging fail.
Twin Peaks, broadcast in 1990-1991.
Author: Paramount Pictures Corporation (1914-1927)
(sigh)
By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, May 04, 2012 - 01:11 pm: Edit |
Garth, Paramount went through a series of name changes.
It was Paramount until 1927.
In 1927 it became Paramount-Famous Lasky Corporation.
Then in 1930, it became Paramount Publix Corporation.
In 1936 it became Paramount Pictures, Inc.
In 1951 it became Paramount Pictures Corporation again.
So it lives!!!

Editor needed. Headline from local paper: Fort Bragg soldier shoots one of two men charged with breaking into his Hoke County home
Turns out the soldier shot and wounded one of the men who were breaking in his home -- while they were breaking in. Afterwards the unwounded man was charged; the guy in the hospital will be charged later.
(sigh)
I'd suggest malice, but I'm afraid that it is simply poor writing.

(sigh) I haven't been saving my dishwater and now I wonder if I ought to have done.

Proofreading needed (or something). Seen as a comment in a local paper: After all we the people DO HAVE THE RIGHT 2 BARE ARMS AND PROTECT OUR HOMES AND THE FAMILY IN THE HOME.
All I could think of was that here, at least, no one has made a ruling about sleeveless or not sleeveless (although one wishes good taste would prevail).

Proofreader needed. From an AP newsfeed: They're publicizing court documents about [political candidate's] past legal, martial and business troubles and denouncing him as unfit for office.
You know that "martial" troubles happen between two people married to each other, right?

Nope, neither did I.

Local store that delivers fruit arranged as a bouquet didn't deliver as promised. The public apology of the manager included this statement:
"Again, I am sorry and will fix my internal problems to ensure this (does) not happen again."
As written, that is just TMI!

How many categories can an ice cream have?

Proofreader needed: A technical issue at a Raleigh switching station caused many AT&T mobile customers in eastern North Carolina to be without service for most of Wednesday, but the outage didn’t affect local governments in neither Robeson County nor Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Next to last paragraph: The property is east of Lumberton.

Steven Roberts Original Deserts and Ticklebelly Deserts is headquartered in Denver, Colo. The company creates, manufactures and distributes premium frozen deserts directly to restaurants, hotels, theaters, gourmet grocery stores and some major retailers, including Olive Garden, Red Lobster and Applebee’s.
The company already has committed to investing $4 million in its Pembroke plant that will create 342 jobs over three years and provide an average wage of about $1 an hour.

This is regarding a "Senior Fire Captain" and I suspect they need a proofreader ...
According to Wayne Horne, the city manager, Evans was placed on administrative leave without pay pending the investigation. Evans, whose salary was $1,775 a year, was hired Jan. 12, 2000.
++
Quick update: another paper has: His salary is $41,775. I suspect that is correct.
(sigh) Proofreading and logic application seem to be unusual skills.

The blurb: "The acting is fabulous."
