What would "N" be?
By Richard B. Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 - 06:57 pm: Edit |
A number.
By Howard Bampton (Bampton) on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 - 01:14 pm: Edit |
More specifically, N in this context is the number of things you need to function at capacity. N+1 means you have a spare one online and functioning. This is common in higher end computer gear in the business market as far as power supplies. 2N+1 would be twice as many as you need, plus a spare. High end datacenters often have this level of redundancy for their power systems (generators, typically). While a normal system might get you 90% availability, and N+1 99%+, 2N+1 gets you to around 99.999% or so. This Wikipedia link seems accurate enough on the point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_availability
Put another way, N+1 redundancy occurs naturally with kidneys and portions of the reproductive system- you've got two, but can live a healthy life with only one. Brains and hearts on the other hand do not have spares.
A probably misplaced attempt at ITish humor. :-(

I know a few people who could use a spare liver.

In a moment I will post a new Gazetteer file. It includes CL47, CL48, and C6, so those are now open for you to report what I missed. I also did one of the archive files, but just did not have any more "non-revenue time" in the CL48 flap list cycle to process any more archives. From what I can tell, the CL47 flap list never really happened in the Gazetteer section.

Minor error in the gazetteer:
Entry for IRIDIMA (hex 1912) reads as "Neutral planet in Fed-Klingon Neutral Zone. Site of the largest battle (SL265) in the Second Federation-Kzinti War."
Per Captain's Log 37, page 45, that should say "Site of the largest battle (SL265) in the Second Federation-Klingon War."

The segment from Mapsheet P in the C6 preview PDF has hex 5702 as the Paravian capital.
Is that the "historical" location of the (former) Paravian home planet?
(Funnily enough, 5702 happens to be right in the middle of that 1-2-3-4-5-6 circle on Mapsheet B...)
Also, since the Farnest does not exist in the historical universe, and neither the Gorn nor ISC off-map regions extend into that "top-right" corner of the Alpha Octant, how would the location of the Wingatha colony (also mentioned in that preview file) be described in the standard timeline?
Would it simply be "Off Map"?
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - 08:27 pm: Edit |
The gztr already says wingatha is off map
Garth's reported item was in the previous gztrs

gazetteer typo:
Battlestatin R10
unless that is a new drug... Battle Statin...
yeah, every time we fight the Klingons, my cholesterol levels go through the roof!

SVC: When I posted my report the first time, I didn't double-check the source (captain's Log) but rather kind of "guessed" it was wrong. This time, I looked it up to be sure.

Any chance, with the next update posting, we can get a version sorted by hex number, please?

Garth,
It's a PDF. Import to Excel and sort by hex number.
Easy peasy.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 11:47 am: Edit |
I tried but for some reason after it sorts i get about half of the planets in hex number order and then it starts over with the other half. I cannot find any reason that it would do that.
By Randy Blair (Randyblair) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 01:37 pm: Edit |
Would you like me to make a copy, sorted by hex numbers and email it to you?
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 01:40 pm: Edit |
Randy: go for it. Or I can email you the excel file.
By Randy Blair (Randyblair) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 01:49 pm: Edit |
That will work better actually.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 01:54 pm: Edit |
SENT, be careful, most excel files sent to me open then crash the computer.
By Randy Blair (Randyblair) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 02:03 pm: Edit |
Ok, then do you want me to send it back as a PDF?
By Randy Blair (Randyblair) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 02:32 pm: Edit |
Strange, it's been a half hour and I haven't received it yet.
Did you send it to the correct email address?
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 04:57 pm: Edit |
I sent it to the last address you send me mail from.
Try sending me an email and I'll reply.
Yes, back as a PDF will be fine.
By Randy Blair (Randyblair) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 07:13 pm: Edit |
I got your email at 17:51 EST, hours after you sent it. Weird.
Resorted by hex and made a minor change, as described in my return email, which was sent at 19:09 EST. (I'm wondering if you email provider is whacking out??)
Please post when you get it.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 09:09 pm: Edit |
It came in just before I left. I will post it tomorrow. The Mac says the file is corrupted but that usually just means that you did it on a newer version of acrobats than I have.
By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Thursday, May 01, 2014 - 11:56 pm: Edit |
SVC: I did say "with the next update". I really didn't expect you to take time to do it now. But, hey, THANKS!

So far as I can tell there are no planets mentioned in CL49. So feel free to look for them and if you find them post them here.
