Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Company-Conventions-Stores-Ideas: About the Company: Hey Steve Cole: Archive 2021
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, January 06, 2021 - 02:18 am: Edit

Here is where I am...

NEW MAP PANELS for FC: These are in Philadelphia being mounted and cut. That should put KLINGON ATTACK back in stock by 1 Feb if the truck carrying them doesn't fall off a bridge. (Which happened once back in the 80s.)

GURPS KLINGONS 2021: done except for integrating the replacement pages (10 minutes), getting a cover from Simone, and anything Jean reports by next week.

GURPS ROMULANS 2021: done except for integrating the replacement pages (10 minutes), getting a cover from Simone, and anything Jean reports by next week.

F&E COUNTERS: Alpha and Bravo apparently need minor fixes. PQ Front is almost done; back will take a day. Civil Wars I have to look at the Kzinti rebels; I think I can wrap this up this week. TacOps I have the mix for the two sheets but haven't even tried to analyze it let alone start on it. Sheet 80 I have roughed out but await public and staff input as to which J/H auxes to include.

SFB COUNTERS: R3-2021 is in Petrick's hands for final checks. R4T and R4J are roughed out but not done yet. Since these will be double sided I asked Petrick what to put on the back and he said "ship explosions."

ACTA: I have the reports to finish Book Two hard copy and Reinforcements PDF but the counters have to get done first.

SFBOL: Jean gave me some preliminary marketing data and was told to go ask the crowd on FB what new features they want for the improved client.

SFM GUNBOATS FIX: I have Mike's proposed fix but am not sure if I will get a chance to review it before this weekend.

Jay Gustafson:

R4T was those Tholian units that were in Captain's Log, plus a lot more developed when it was decided to do R4T. There are the Police Destroyers and Police War Destroyers that appeared as to single ships in Captains Log, plut their variants. The Tholiam Home Galaxy versions of their Neo-Tholian Battleship, Dreadnought, Heavy and light cruisers (you got the Destroyer and Frigate in Module C3). There are also ships for operations in the Tholian Home Galaxy including armed freighters and auxiliary cruisers for battles in the Home Galaxy. There are also added Tholian X-ships for this Milky Way Galaxy, and Fast ships. The SSD book as (with those over 70 pages (three of those pages were given to Tholian Fighters: a page of size 1 fighters, a page of their size 2 heavy fighters, and a page with the size three medium bombers and an SSD for the Interceptor work boat).

Module R4J SHADOW OF THE EAGLE is what if the Romulans developed warp on their own at the same time as everyone else. The J harkens to Stellar Shadow Journal and this could be considered SSJ#3.

Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021: In the service of my customers, I did the following
===
Reviewed all email, moved it into the right stack, answered anything short. This included a conversation with the new die cutter who is about done with the new FC map panels and the long-awaited reprint of Klingon Attack's planet maps.
===
Reviewed the WYN SUC factors for F&E with Steve Petrick and came up with 4-2/2-1.
===
Created the 500 point planet killer for FC, named it the Jupiter Killer, had Steve Petrick check it, fixed the mistake he found, scheduled it for the 10 Feb newsletter.
===
Made the last fix to GK21 (GURPS Klingons 2021) and built the PDF and gave that to Leanna.
===
Walked Wolf around the block. (He was visiting today as the remodelling of Jean's house was too intense for him.)
===
I checked the R4T scenarios and did the graphics for them. Steve Petrick found one minor error in one graphic.
===
Staff meeting (incluing Jean's weekly visit) reviewed current projects. Discussed several items. Scheduled PDF releases (21 Jan GURPS Klingons 2021; 3 Feb SFB Module R4T; three projects are in development for 10-17-24 Feb). Discussed marketing for TacOps.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - 02:28 pm: Edit

Wednesday, 20 Jan 2021
=
Reviewed email, answered or filed everything but the Lyran BATs which I need Petrick to look at and he's waiting for the cable repair guy to come to his house.
=
Talked with the company making the FC/KA maps about freight shipment; they should be on the way today or tomorrow and here next week.
=
Hunted down the reports on ACTASF-2 so I can finish the 2.2 version probably tomorrow and we can then start doing hard copies. That would let us schedule the PDF for one of the Feb dates.
=
Rescheduled next week's staff meeting to Monday because every other day that week ran into somebody's prior appointments.
=
Worked on reports on the F&E counters (posted 4pm) and SIT. This consumed the bulk of the day. I also made the last fixes to the back of PQ.
=
Helped Jean get GK21 onto the PDF stores.
=
Fixed the R4T scenario graphic, exported the four to EPS, and emailed them to Steve Petrick.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, January 21, 2021 - 03:02 pm: Edit

THURSDAY 21 Jan 2021
=
Reviewed email, answered or filed everything but the Lyran BATs which I need Petrick to look at. Some guy was starting a new online game store and wanted to carry SFU and I said no thanks we had the mail order market covered and there was nothing he could do to earn a share of our profits.
=
Still talking with map mounter about the freight shipment thing.
=
Worked a bit on F&E-TO counters and SITs. Corrected the Fed VT to 3/2. Fixed the command rating on the Hydran HDWC which turned out to be the only HDWC with the wrong command rating. Started analysis of F&E factors for Tholian R4T ships.
=
Worked on ACTASF-2.2 until I had to leave for a routine medical appointment. Seems at my age I have one or two of those a week. Sigh.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Saturday, January 23, 2021 - 01:20 pm: Edit

I WAS ASKED: How did SVC came up with the way ships move?

I had played a lot of Richthoffen's War and didn't want a your-turn/my-turn system. I wanted a simultaenous system. I had seen games where you wrote down your movement secretly (SFB did that for the first year) but I wanted a "proportional" movement system. Being an engineer, it wasn't hard to invent.

How did you arrive at the phaser-1 chart?

Same as all the weapons. It was a balance between maneuver and firepower. Weapons tables were designed to define movement tactics. How close do you want to get?

Midturn speed changes?

People asked me to invent it and I did.

How did the ISC PPD develop

It was designed by Josh Spencer who sadly cannot tell us how he did it.

FRIDAY 22 JAN 2021

Answered email. Heard from another new retailer, this one a local brick and mortar we will do business with.

I processed reports on Tactical Ops and the PQ reprint.

I finished ACTASF2.2B and generated the PDF. It will be checked and scheduled for release as PDF and hard copy.

SATURAY 23 JAN 2021

I worked on the TANGO and OSCAR countersheets for TacOps, posting the finalized fronts at 3pm. I posted the current version of the SIT which is missing about a third of the data but has all of the factors and SFB references. Salute to Chuck and his staff for an excellent report that made the process easy.

When I walked into the office I found Jean's report on GK21 and worked on that, finishing the fixes at 4pm. Kudos to Jean for getting it done.

Then I shrugged and started doing the back of Tango, getting about 2/3 finished before time to go home.

I didn't look at email until late in the day.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, January 25, 2021 - 02:10 pm: Edit

MONDAY
=
Got the back of TANGO finished and posted. Did all BBS reports for TO Counters done by 1pm.
=
Did the back cover for R4T.
=
Did the first five pages of corrections to GK21R.
=
Staff Meeting scheduled ACTASF2.2B for PDF says on 10 Feb 2021. We scheduled Simone to come in and do the color hard cover on Wednesday.
=
Leanna and I took Simone's computer to the PC guys for upgrading to a faster processor, more memory, and Win10.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 - 03:27 pm: Edit

TUESDAY
Did and posted OSCAR-BACK after running the SIT checks I didn't intend to run and finding 60 corrections.
===
So I ran the SIT checks on TANGO-BACK and reloaded it.
====
Made spelling corrections to 17 pages of GK21R.
====
Did email and routine stuff. Did some descriptions for Shapeways ships.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 - 03:29 pm: Edit

WEDNESDAY
====
Email and routine stuff. Did some descriptions for Shapeways stuff.
====
Made spelling corrections to 8 more pages of GK21R.
====
Make 55 corrections to the HDW countersheet and sent it back to the staff for upload.
====
We got Simone's computer back from upgrading and it had some kind of hard disk issue that Leanna is sorting out.
====
Simone came in to do the back cover for R4T and the PDF front cover for GURPS ROMULANS 2021 but could nto do so as the computer was still downloading new software.
====
I confirmed that DNWV, DNWZ, and so forth are the correct designations.
===
I did corrected pages for two pages of ACTASF2.2B so that will be ready to go,
===
At the request of the Garcarian Ambassador, I sent some Steve Petrick data on the Fed HDW with F111s to the F&E staff for their review.
===
Fed Ship R2.A21 has been variously listed as LVH and LHV and today Steve Petrick decided that the correct entry is LVH. I synchronized the TO counters and SIT.
===
While I had it open I alpha sorted the TO SIT but you won't see that until the next time I post it.
====
I set up the back of civil wars and did everything but halving the factors. I then started building a SIT for the product.

===
I finished the Romulan SIT for Civil Wars so I can check half of the countersheet.
===
I did spelling corrections to eight more pages of GK21.
=
Answered email.
==
posted a schedule update.
=
Steve Petrick ruled that the Fed HDWZ has four F111s (six attack factors) and two special sensors, but no F18s. A theoretical HDWH with six F111s (9 attack factors) has no F18s and no special sensors.
===
Steve Petrick and I did the missing piece of art for R4T.

Finished the civil war SIT. Finished the civil war counters (for today, sigh) and posted them and the SIT.
=
Left to run errands. Back tomorrow.

I got my COVID19 vaccination, or the first of the two. Almost no one was at the civic center but it still took an hour for paperwork, walking through huge empty rooms of roped off que lines, answering questions, waiting for a nurse (10 minute) and then the self-monitored observation period (15 minutes to see if Leanna or I were going to have a reaction). All done for now, I meant to do it earlier but the Great Dragon (F&E counters) consumed every moment of my time. The trip is probably going to result in delaying the counters a day but it's better than being dead. Although, if I were dead, I would not have to work on counters any more!

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, February 09, 2021 - 04:10 pm: Edit

Been a busy afternoon since I got here.

I finished updating the PDF sheet of HDW counters and sent them to Simone. I also sent her a JPG sheet.

I got the updated GURPS Roms weapons tables done and sent to Simone for the 10 Feb newsletter.

I found the Planet Killer 500 ship card I did for FC and sent it to Simone for the 10 Feb newsletter.

I made the last five page pages to ACTASF-2.2B so the print edition can start printing soon. Not sure about the cover but I have to discuss that with Simone.

Did the art for the Tholian battleships and CVH so the Tholian MSSB can match what Chuck Strong did in F&E.

VAT UPDATE: Simply put, nobody knows what is taxable or what to do. Lots of companies around the world are ready to tell the UK to go stuff themselves. Since when did the UK have the legal, moral, or ethical right to order a foreign company to collect British taxes?

We have received no straight answers on what is and is not taxable, but no packages are accepted for shipment without a VAT account number. The UK got something like 20 million applications for a VAT account number and have processed about 3% of them. This same flood is probably why the UK isn't answering questions about what to do.

The game industry is going crazy trying to get anything shipped. Many companies have decided to include a tea bag in every shipment and throw the shipment into an east coast harbor and hope it floats to the UK. If the UK can legally require an American company to collect their taxes then US companies can legally require the UK to send a ship to pick up the packages out of the harbor.

We are trying to find a freight/mail service that will do the paperwork for us but (guess what?) the companies that do that have 100,000 companies asking them for help and have processed about 1% of such requests.

Simply put, the UK shot itself and its subjects in the foot. I think you lot need to have a chat with your politicians about bad career choices.

MONDAY MARCH 1ST
Received from Cenveo the proofs of the second countersheet batch (the 300s)
Received from SPP the proofread SFM Update (March newsletter freebie #1)
Received from Chuck Strong the rest of the TacOps SIT data.
Received from Tony Thomas the Tholian BB for ACTASF (March newsletter freebie #2).
Checked the countersheet proofs for the 300s.
Lunch: Fish at Calico.
Sent corrections to Cenveo for sheet R3 (corrupted RKL icons) and the R4T/R4J/80 sheet (I forgot to turn off the die cut lines).
Made the corrections to the SFM update and sent it to Jean and Mike West.
Got an email saying Jean had released 48 new items on Shapeways.
I proofread Jean’s Shapeways press release, making a few suggestions.
I made Jean’s changes to 24 pages of GURPS ROMULANS 21 including some that I did not agree with.
I did the roster for the ACTASF version of the Tholian Battleship and sent it to Tony and Jean for checking.
I did the first page of the TacOps SIT from Chuck’s table.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, March 02, 2021 - 05:45 pm: Edit

TUESDAY MARCH 2ND 2021
Received status report from Jean and Steve Petrick.
Received the revised countersheet proofs from Cenveo.
Sent my weekly status report SPP, JSB, LMC.
Reviewed with Leanna the situation with getting the four non-updated F&E rulebooks available in PDF. A memo was created for tonight’s staff meeting and these might be released this week.
Built the Combined Ops 2003 rulebook from the file and sent it to Leanna.
Looked into the 320.0 special/advanced raids rule, compared it the original to CL53. Conference with Leanna and Steve Petrick decided on the best way to fix that and we created the amended Planetary Ops book.
Sent Cenveo the go-ahead on printing the counters.
I finished the Federation part of the TacOps SIT and sent it to the staff.
I did all of the changes for GURPS ROMS 21 that Jean had given me (to page 102).
Staff meeting came up with a plan to solve the final issues getting R4T (covers) and F&E PDF rulebooks (watermarks) out, maybe even this week. Jean came up with the Star Fleet Marines Battle Manual. Just as I packed up go to home Leanna solved the watermark problem so the F&E rulebook thing should happen. I think we can get R4T out this week if Simone can come in and do the covers and Shawn can fix the SSD book problem.

Monday March 29th: Staff meeting. I worked on ACTASFR1.

Tuesday March 30th: worked on ACTASFR1.

Wednesday March 31st: worked on ACTASFR1. After I got home, I spent two hours cutting firewood.

Thursday April 1: We say the Drach video and were all excited. I worked on ACTASF.

Friday April 2: Leanna and I came down hard with a cold and drove home on back roads at 25mph, all I could handle.

Saturday April 3: We stayed home too sick to move.

Sunday April 4: I managed to stagger to Walmart to get something to cook.

Monday April 5: We made it back to work. I got the Tholians and Orions done for ACTASFR1. A doctor report said that there is actually nothing wrong with my liver, which I guess is good.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 - 06:47 pm: Edit

WEDNESDAY APRIL 14th 2021
Module R4J is finished, but we had to struggle to get the color SSD book to work. Leanna finally made it behave and I drove across town to put a zip drive in Jean’s hands.
Leanna got busy uploading the new countersheets to the shopping cart. I helped.
I sent Simone the big news section for the newsletter. I replaced one of the WB10 newsletter freebies to correct two minor errors noticed during yesterday’s staff meeting.
I sent the Klingon WB10 and Fed DNW to FCOL. I also sent them the Frax CWL and got the Gorn BFF ready to send tomorrow and two more ships for the following days. I sent FCOL a replacement for the Klingon BT7 which had two minor mistakes that were caused when I modified the file and deleted two things I should not have. Oops.
I finished the ACTASFR1 scenario section (except for the scenario not send to me yet) and sent it back to Tony.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, April 15, 2021 - 06:46 pm: Edit

THURDAY APRIL 15th 2021
I had lunch with Jean and Al; we discussed shapeways, tournaments, R4J, and the next products.
I sent FCOL two ISC ships (one they needed, one they didn’t) and the Gorn BFF. I did some more ships for them for later days. I don’t want to send ships faster than they can do them as backlogged ships get lost and my time is valuable enough that I should not waste it getting weeks ahead (even if doing ships for them is fun). They checked on Distant Kingdoms and said they needed only the WYN Aux (sent) and the two battleships (both, done and sent). They checked on War & Peace and only needed the ISC battleship (done and sent).
I checked Hailing Frequencies and released it, so did SPP and JESB.
I sent a note to Daniel Kast of Stramada regarding Rumors of Wars and the streamlined rules that Zac Belado said he wanted.
I did all of Tony Thomas’s reports on ACTASFR1 Tholians, Orions, Selts, Frax, WYNs, Juggernauts and sent him new PDFs of those chapters. I just need on scenario, one monster, and two civilians to finish this thing.

Contrary to rumor, I have not sold ADB.

I have many times said if someone wants to buy it, I want to sell it and retire. But the license and IP is worth a lot and I'm not going to give ADB away for nothing.

So far, nobody has put money on the table, although I have talked to a dozen who said they might be interested but nothing has come of any of those discussions ... yet.

Someday, someone will buy ADB. When that day comes (if I am still alive), I will let you know.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to buy ADB or knows someone who might, contact me.

I have actually been inside the cages of some of the wolves. I have petted and rubbed a live wolf and sat for an hour on a hay bale with a wolf at my feet with his chin on my knee. (He could tell from the smell that I was the guy who brought the organ meat and when they brought him to the campfire circle he picked me to sit with.)

I met a cougar in the wild when I was 16, about 30 feet apart in a New Mexico forest. We stared at each other for a full minute, both astonished, and then he just turned and walked away.

I met a fox a block from my house (I live in a clump of houses in the country). He was as astonished as I was. We were 30 feet apart and just looked at each other, then he sauntered off. He was probably one of the ones I chased out of my back yard a month earlier. I was driving a block from Jean's house and met a fox who didn't pay me any attention he just keep running across the street.

I have stood two feet from a tiger and pushed a steak through a hole in his fence. I looked out the window of the cabin we were staying in at Florida (Big Cat Rescue) to learn that the tiger pen was literally attached to the cabin and there was just a piece of wire reinforced glass between us. We went into the various cages with Russian Lynxes and Servals and Ocelots and American bobcats. The ocelot peed on my pants leg and an hour later the Lynx was chewing on my pant leg (not my leg, just the floppy parts of my jeans) when the zookeeper suggested I get out of the cage quickly.

Leanna is okay, but she was in a traffic accident today and was taken to the hospital for a few hours for tests and to have a doctor check her out. Only damage seems to be seat belt bruise. The spine repair (screws and rods) from two months ago was not affected. Her car is probably a total loss but we have to wait for the insurance paperwork to be certain of that.

My extreme thanks to Al, Steve Petrick, and Jean for their help in navigating the crisis. I went straight to the hospital to meet the ambulance and my "brother in law" Al went to where the car was to arrange towing and deal with the police and sheriff. Jean helped me track down phone numbers for relatives that I kept meaning to program into my not-so-smart phone (which was built by the Union Army Corps of Engineers and Electricians in 1864). Steve Petrick kept the office under control and made sure Jean got to her car okay at the end of the day. (At ADB, women do not walk alone to their cars. It's not a bad neighborhood; we just think women need a male escort.)

Knee replacement surgery went well, discharged today Tuesday at 2 pm. Pain is extremely bad, the worst that I have felt in my life. Even with opioids it is blinding. They tell me the first week is the worst. I have a machine that for the next two weeks will circulate ice water around my knee six hours a day. A second machine bends my knee once a minute for six hours per day. I am supposed to get up and walk five minutes six times per day on a walker but today the pain was too much.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, December 02, 2021 - 10:11 pm: Edit

I am feeling better with round the clock painkillers. I did six hours on the two machines, and walked on a walker several times. I will read a few hours and go to bed. Tomorrow will be a bit of a challenge as Leanna has to go to the doctor. It will be m first time alone since surgery.

Report on Friday.
I am stunned by the typo rate of this report, most of which I went back and fixed.
Midnight, Walker to bathroom, isometric exercise, fell asleep.
4am, woke up, Walker to bathroom, took pain pill.
9am, woke up, tried to get breakfast on walker but ended up waking up Leanna. This whole thing has been very hard on her, she did not sign up for his much physical labor to manage my rehab. My getting six hours of work on the machines costs her three hours of hooking them up and moving them into / out of position. Then, for safety reasons, she cannot leave the room while they are running as I cannot get out of them on my own.
10am, pain pill, two hours on exercise/cold machines.
12n light lunch. Walker.
12:30 Leanna went to appointment.
2:30 Leanna returned with Raising Cain chicken strips.
3pm Odin stole Leanna's bread and had to be bribed with a chicken strip to give it back.
4pm pain pill. Walker
4:20 exercise and cold machines.
7:20 done with machines (five hours will have to do). Ate a bowl of cereal with fruit.
8pm tried to work on computer but there is a typo in every third word. Must be drunk from pain meds. Knee hurts sitting in the only available position.
For what it's worth, I have no appetite and am eating about half of my normal calories. I cannot finish meals I previously ate all of regularly. I now eat about 3/4 of my breakfast bowl, 3/4 of my lunch, no snacks, and less than half of what passed for supper.
I had dreamed of an hour of office time today but that didn't happen. I will probably get one hour on Monday as I have to go to town and it's a special lunch for Leanna.

SVC, awhile back you listed names and hull numbers for Fed war dreadnoughts. I'm making some decals for mine but I can't find that list anywhere. Would you be able to repeat them? Thanks.
