All three posts from last night and this morning are deleted. Some of these seem to be coming from hijacked Tor exit nodes and there are hundreds of those nodes. IP numbers blocked where appropriate, and IP ranges blocked when appropriate.

Three posts were deleted. Three IP ranges blocked.

Two of the three were Tor exit nodes.

Three countries: Switzerland, Romania, and Germany.

The attack may have started on February 8. At that point, we got 20,000 more hits than normal. By the 10th, it was 30,000 more hits than normal. By the 12th, it was 40,000 more hits than normal. By the 15th, they hit 45,000. On the 16th and 17th, they hit 65,000. Yesterday, they only were 20,000 above normal.

The IPs I blocked are blacklisted by multiple services. The IPs are known for spam and brute force attacks.

Perhaps you should suspend instant registration for a (undetermined) period of time?

If the spammers can’t register, they can’t gain access to the bbs.

That is not what is happening. The ones who are posting aren't registered. They are just hammering until they get in without it.

Jeff, what the spammers are doing is hitting the BBS so hard, so often, that the "You can't post" software gives way. That is why the message always is an Authentication Error.
