Which is what?

I think Mike was making reference to proposals he's made for alternate timelines in which the Federation don't use drones.

Sounds like a lot of work to sell eleven copies.
By Mike West (Mjwest) on Saturday, December 17, 2022 - 10:50 pm: Edit |
So, if it can't sell, can I put a version of the drone-less Federation on my website? Can I consider it already rejected?

Hey Steve - I wonder when you guys were originally designing SFB if the main building blocks came together easy or hard. I am considering the move chart, DAC, and movement rules. Were those and other bigger parts of the game a ton of trial and error?
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, January 04, 2023 - 11:30 am: Edit |
All of that happened in the first hour of design, during one rerun of Star Trek.

Steve, again I find myself wishing you could take the time (yes, I know, there isn't any) to write an (auto)biography of the game, how it came to be, and the decisions that made it work the way we know and love. But also the little things... Like, "Just which episode was that rerun if you remember?" Things like little tidbits I remember from the GEnie days, when SPP talked about playing pocket edition on a flight somewhere, and so forth. Or the Klingon's discovering Mountain Dew and having to call their ships to have their soiled uniforms replaced with clean ones via Transporter magic.
Sure there are a lot of snippets here and there in the various reports over the last forty years tucked in places, like the quip about the "weekly Ma Bell Enrichment Sessions" in a pre-Captain's Edition newsletter I recently read as a PDF.
Mind you, this is the hobbyist-historian in me begging. If I had the time and the money, I'd absolutely go all in on such a project. Asking everyone that would let me pester them to sit for interviews and go digging in any archives where I'd be welcomed to do so, and so forth with the goal of writing the story behind the game.
Apologies for geeking out. I just have always had a soft spot for the SFU, ever since I immersed myself in it, thirty years ago. And for me, unable to ever make it to any of the big events when they were still big, I'd love to have that little slice of history preserved.

Outstanding! Which rerun as it? I need to watch it for inspiration!

I vote Trouble with Tribbles

I would guess Balance of Terror. Lot's of tense, proportional movement there, with a focus on tactical combat. 2nd guess, Journey to Babel, with the Orion ship doing that speed 31 stuff every turn ...

I agree with Jeff. I'd pay for it.

Maybe SVC and SPP would agree to an Origins Story Style interview during the next StratCon? One that could be recorded, edited and released somehow. Or maybe summarized into a Story Segment for CaptLog?
By Jeff Guthridge (Jeff_Guthridge) on Wednesday, January 04, 2023 - 11:23 pm: Edit |
If they would agree to sit for it, I would happily commit to coming to StratCon and bring recording gear.

SVC: How is your knee feeling?
--Mike
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, February 13, 2023 - 07:35 pm: Edit |
Pretty bad. X-rays said it’s not bone damage, probably not torn muscle, next guess is a nerve pinch in my spine. Waiting for a scan to tell if that’s it. If so, I face a year of extreme pain before surgery reduces the pain by 50%.
By Jessica Orsini (Jessica_Orsini) on Monday, February 13, 2023 - 09:51 pm: Edit |
The clean X-ray is at least good news (because that rules out arthritis, and arthritis is forever).
I'm currently in a similar, though not as painful, boat; likely torn meniscus, clean X-ray, and MRI pending in three weeks. Knee brace and a cane for the meantime.
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, February 13, 2023 - 10:47 pm: Edit |
I already had arthritis (which is why I had the knee replaced a year ago). The X-rays today showed that I didn't crack the bones, dislodge the kneecap, or break the glue joint that holds the metal parts to the original bone. All of which would be catastrophic.
You have to eliminate the horse, the donkey, and the Shetland Pony before you decide it's a zebra. Hence, we check the spine for a collapsed disk.
If it's not my spine, the next target is a nerve connection in my hip that could be fixed with a steroid shot. If that doesn't fix it, we're back to the original "torn muscle that will heal in time."

Ask a Chiropractor..
After getting run over by a Camry and having a plate installed in my left arm, I had the sensation that my left thigh (front) was burning. Like someone is holding a lighter to it. ALL the time.
Chiro is like, Kneel like this, foot turned like so, put your arm like tgis, push like this, tilt your hips so, and squeeze your bum... Fixed. Best $40 ever There was some nerve wonkiness.

Stay Strong, SVC
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 - 10:28 am: Edit |
The knee is okay, a little sore, whatever happened healed.
The problem in my side isn’t going to be healed or fixed. I am apparently going to be in pain the rest of my life.
