Star Fleet Battles at Council 2022 and 2023
Hello Star Fleet Battles fans worldwide,
I’d like to update you on a discussion we had at Council of Five Nations back in September 2019, the last Council convention since COVID, about the future of our SFB tournament. Please note, this message is long; I hope you will read to the end, where I will be asking you to answer three questions.
For readers with short attention spans, here is the executive summary:
1. The events and discussion at the last Council that led us to where we are now
2. Normal SFB tournament at this year’s Council, September 23-25, 2022
3. 2023 will be our last SFB tournament
4. We want to go out with a bang, and we hope the whole SFB/SFU community will join us
5. Questions about your desire to attend and help plan the big bang last tournament.
WHAT WE DISCUSSED AT COUNCIL 2019
I started the discussion at Council 2019 by posting on the wall the famous stanza from a T.S. Eliot poem:
“This is the way the world ends,
not with a bang, but a whimper.”
As many of you know, Council has been fortunate to host the biggest face-to-face SFB tournament in the world for years now, ever since ADB stopped attending Origins. We’ve had some good years, with attendance in the 30s, and a big push in 2016 when we had 42 players to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. But a typical year for us has been “high teens to low 20s”.
This has been pretty steady since 2014 or so. We used to get high 20s, but as most of us know, the SFB community has been suffering attrition for a long time.
Special for us in 2019 was confirmation that we would have three new players; all long-time SFB guys, but Council first-timers. Not only this, but all three would be traveling a long distance – two from California, and one from Alberta, Canada. Council is in Upstate New York, so we see transcontinental journeys like this as a big deal.
As the tournament judge, I had a bit of a dilemma that was giving me stress. Three first-timers is great news. But we knew that schedule conflicts would prevent several of our regulars from attending. Would we have enough critical mass to make sure these first-timers would have a good pool of opponents? The slow trickle of RSVPs made me concerned we would not even reach sixteen.
I want to tell you, I was about a week away from contacting these three guys and telling them to save their money, to hopefully come next year. I did not want them to travel so far only to find a too-empty room.
Then, over the next few days, some of our Maybes upgraded to “Committed” status, and I felt better. We ended up with sixteen players, and our first-time guests report they had a good time.
But, this was a learning experience.
I have come to the point where I do not want the SFB tournament at Council to limp along every year under a cloud of uncertainty. Will we get at least sixteen this year? Will we get at least double digits this year? At what point do out attendees regret coming? When do we pull the plug?
So rather than limp along until we end with a whimper, I’d prefer we go out with a bang.
I proposed the following to the Council 2019 attendees:
1. Set a date for the last SFB tournament sponsored by the Schenectady Wargamers Association. Set that date three years in the future.
2. Announce that date as soon as possible
3. Have two more years of ‘normal’ tournaments at Council
4. Promote the final tournament as heavily as we can
5. Go out with a Bang!
The feedback from the folks in the room was:
“Two years is probably better than three, so let’s have the last one in 2021.”
Then, of course, COVID happened. There was no Council gaming convention at all in 2020 or 2021.
BUSINESS AS USUAL THIS YEAR
We are on track to resume at this year’s Council convention, September 23-25, 2022, in Schenectady, New York. Please mark your calendars now.
We hope and expect to have our usual “low twenties/high teens” turnout. However, it is responsible to acknowledge that after a two-year COVID hiatus, and the possibility of new COVID case spikes, we face greater uncertainty in Council attendance, and specifically SFB tournament attendance.
Please keep reading to learn how you can RSVP for this year’s Council convention.
GOING OUT WITH A BANG IN 2023
The last big Star Fleet Battles tournament sponsored by the Schenectady Wargamers Association will happen sometime in 2023. And we want to go out with the biggest bang we can muster.
To make this happen, we are open to all sorts of options:
• Flexible on timing and date. We are not fixed on piggy-backing on Council, in late September or early October 2023. Is a summer date better?
• Flexible on location. We are not fixed on Upstate New York. What is the best venue to maximize attendance?
• While the focus of the event will be our Patrol-format tournament, with single-elimination finals tree, we would love to have other SFU events represented as well: Federation & Empire. Federation Commander. A Call to Arms: Star Fleet. Other games you think might appeal to this audience.
Since this is the last Big Bang Blowout, I bet we’ll easily get 32 players. Can we get 64? I think we can. Can we get 128? I bet that goal is a good stretch, but it could happen, especially if all of you reading this commit to attending, and you help recruit all your old SFB gaming buddies and get them to take one last ride with you.
Now, please don’t interpret this as a declaration that there will be no more face-to-face SFB tournaments at all. While there are far fewer these days than the heyday of the 1980s, we know there are other tournaments out there. Our good friends in Battlefleet Toronto (Ontario, Canada) have been putting on a good tournament for several years now, and they get Ace-card level attendance regularly. And that’s just one example.
THREE QUESTIONS
To get the ball rolling, if you’d like to participate in any way, please answer these three questions:
1. Do you want to attend this year’s tournament at Council, September 23-25, in Schenectady, NY? What is your level of commitment (Maybe, Probably, Committed)?
2. Do you want to attend our last Big Bang Blowout Final Event in 2023? Date and location still To Be Determined? What is your level of commitment (Maybe, Probably, Committed)?
3. Do you want to help decide the date and location of the Big Bang Blowout Final Event? This will involve committing some of your time, thought, and maybe some homework. We will do much of the work via private email discussion, and maybe a couple of phone or web conferences. Probably not more than five hours of your time over the next year or so. OR, would you rather let other folks decide the date and time, and you’ll let us know if you’re going to attend when we announce that info?
When answering 1 & 2 above, here is a guideline:
“Maybe” tells us you want to be there, and there is a reasonable chance it will happen.
“Probably” means you really want to be there and are willing to put effort into attending. You will save some of your vacation time accrual for this event, and you will budget for travel, lodging and convention fees.
“Committed” means you will make every effort to be there. You will schedule around this SFB tournament. You will make it a top priority, even if this means saying no to other events and obligations. It is written in ink on your calendar.
We expect many of you will be “Maybe” at this point. And, we know that at least a hundred of you SFB fans have attended the Council SFB tournament in the past, and some of you regularly attend. We expect those folks to be more likely to say “Probably” or “Committed” at this point.
I will take all the email responses and build a list. That will be our starting point.
Our goal is to announce the 2023 date and location by SEPTEMBER 1, 2022. That will give you all about a year to make arrangements to attend.
If you are receiving this message via email, because you are subscribed to the SWA-SFB announcement list, you can simply ‘reply’ to the email and I’ll get it.
If you are seeing this message via the ADB BBS, or one of the Facebook groups, please do not reply there. Instead, please reply via email to me at SFB@swa-gaming.org. This will allow me to keep track of all the replies in one folder in my email software.
I will post more info as things develop.
One last thing. The Council SFB tournament has developed a good reputation in the SFB community for years now. Many of you have at least heard about us. To all you guys who’ve said over the years “Yeah, I want to attend one of these days…” Well, this is it. Your last chance will be in 2023. This is the last Big Bang Blowout. We hope to see you there.
Thank you for reading to the end.

Big Change for SFB at Council, September 23-25
Hello SFB Community,
The Schenectady Wargamers Association has regrettably just announced that the Council gaming convention is canceled for this year.
However, the SFB tournament is still happening. We are moving the action to my house.
For those of you who have not been here, you might think this is crazy. But I have a big game room that can accommodate 15-20. I have enough tables and chairs. If a whole lot of you show up, we can set up more tables in the living/dining room. So, this is not crazy.
Lodging
I have a guest suite that can sleep four or five. It has a full bathroom. And we can set up mattresses for a few more. For those of you who might prefer a bit more comfort and privacy, there are two hotels literally within walking distance, and several more within a ten minute drive.
Food
I have many good options within a 10-15 minute radius. Several are even within easy walking distance. For those of you who want to arrive on Thursday afternoon or evening, we will still have our traditional welcome banquet at a nice restaurant.
Headcount
As of last week, we had 10 committed and 6 maybes. And I have not yet heard from a lot of our regulars. I expect we will lose several, but we’ll probably gain some too. Big Bad Bill Schoeller is still flying in from Texas to attend. And he’s bringing Big Ed as well.
RSVPs
If you already RSVP’d to my June 28 message, please reply again to update or confirm your status. If you have not yet RSVP’d, and would like to attend, please do so by next Wednesday, August 31st. I would like to get a more specific headcount to be able to make plans.
BASICS
When: Friday, September 23 - Sunday, September 25
Where: Dave’s house in Albany, NY
• Three hours north of New York City
• Three hours west of Boston
• Five hours south of Montreal
• Four hours east of Buffalo.
Tournament Cost: None, except $5 for tournament re-entries
Hope to see many of you in about a month.
We can do this.

Finals bracket at Council SFB at Dave's House.
Dr David Zimdars (Kzinti) vs John Rigley (WYN Aux gHBd)
Bill Schoeller (Klingon) vs Dave Cheng (Lyran Democratic Republic)
In one of the signs of the Apocalypse, DC's LDR defeats Big Bad Bill's Klingon.
T1. LDR corner dodges to deny Klingon Overload shot. Klingon separates from his scatterpack drones to deny the LDR a range 15 sniping shot. LDR scrapes #6 for 4 points.
T2. LDR Gatling targeting system need maintenance. Six Gat pulses destroys only one of the SP drones. It takes three Ph1s and the other two pulses to clean them up. Klingon chases LDR into the corner, but discharges four more OLs. LDR scrapes #6 for 9 more points (FX disruptors are worth the BPV cost).
T3. LDR comes out of the corner at speed 15, both ESGs up at range 2. Klingon alpha strikes at range 4, One OL misses, LDR has 6 brick and takes 6 internals. _No_ weapons. LDR hits Klingon in the #4 as it turns to run from an ESG overrun. Scores a handful of internals (only had standards loaded). Klingon ends at range 4, with ESGs 2 hexes away, but they will go down after imp 3.
T4. Klingon staff officers fail a crew check as they see two ESGs bearing down on them at speed 31. They allocate power to a disruptor that was destroyed in T3, and they fail to protect the down #4. LDR gets above average Ph1s and one OL disruptor hit, 33 internals.
Klingon concedes soon after.
There are so many little things to remember in this game, even Fleet Admirals can lose track of one or two in a critical moment...
The WYN Pig / Kzinti fight is ongoing...

Council at Dave's House Finals Results
Dr Zimdars (Kzinti) defeats DC (LDR)
Turn 1
Kzinti launches SP shuttle early, SP blossoms with six fast drones. Kzin speeds up to 31 to stay right with them in same hex. LDR corner dodges to the right. End the turn at range 4. LDR shoots earlier at r13 to ding the #2 shield, wanting disruptors available early turn 2. Imp 32, Kzin fires 3 OL, 4 Ph1 to bring LDR #1 shield down to 2 boxes, and launches four more drones, 2 fast, 2 normal. I see all 8 of his Fast now. LDR announces ESGs and shoots 2 Ph1 at newly-launched drones. -4 to two drones shows they are both heavy.
Turn 2
LDR parks. Kzin approaches speed 9, then later 8. LDR uses gatling and both radius-1 ESGs to deal with 10 incoming drones. Kzin slowly passes by, takes two LDR sheilds down by half with split fire (thinking LDR fire would breach shield, but LDR holds fire). LDR eventually shoots OL x3 and 3 Ph1 to get 12 internals. LDR tractors Kzin at R2 and sends two fake SS to draw fire, then later another SS shuttle which the Kzin cripples.
Turn 3
We both park. LDR weasels 4 drones, kills 3 Kzin shuttles with Gats. We exchange fire. Kzin takes 8 internals. LDR takes a bunch. LDR almost concedes, but let's see what happens. LDR uses pre-allocated HET to bring its good #3 to bear.
Turn 4
Imp 1. LDR alpha does 21 thorough weak Kzin #1. Kzin does 22 throug good LDR #3. Kzin is taking damage better than the LDR, as expected.
LDR now concedes. 2 Disruptors, 1 Ph1 and 1 gatling will not be enough to overcome Kzin 3 disruptors, 4 Ph1 and 4 drone racks.
Many congratulations to Dr David Zimdars for winning the Council Cup 2022!

December 2022 Update on the SFB Big Bang Blowout
This message was sent out to 40 participants and 20 commenters on December 20, 2022.
You don't need to have participated in one of the Sapphire Star tournaments to RSVP here!
------------
Hello,
You are receiving this email via BCC because you have participated in at least one of the twelve Sapphire Star online tournaments, sponsored by ADB, since 2019. Or you posted comments in one or more of the ADB BBS discussion threads.
Back in June of 2022, I announced that I will be organizing a final "Big Bang Blowout SFB Tournament" some time in 2023. I posted it to the ADB BBS, various FaceBook groups, and to the 220-ish subscribers of the Schenectady Wargamers Association's SFB email list. That message is included below for your reference.
I asked for folks to contact me if they were interested in attending such an event. The response was... disappointing. Only 27 respondents.
I know that first message was too long, so I am going to keep this one much shorter.
There are not many active SFB tournament players left. The population of all Sapphire Star participants is 42 - I counted! If the Big Bang Blowout SFB Tournament has any hope of succeeding, it seems logical that a core of interest and support has to come from you folks.
Here is what we know already:
* We have no momentum for a 2023 date. 2023 is off the table.
* It will happen in 2024, probably Summer 2024, or it won't happen at all.
* The event will be several days, probably five. Maybe seven? This is our last Big Bang!
* Location is still "to be determined", but certainly somewhere in the USA. We will look at who has committed to attending and will pick a hotel location to maximize travel ease, cost, and facility quality.
* While the Patrol tournament will be the centerpiece, we want other Star Fleet Universe games: SFB scenarios, at least one big Federation & Empire game, ACTA:Star Fleet, Federation Commander, Star Fleet roleplaying...
PLEASE REPLY
Please reply to this email to let me know if you are interested in attending such an event. If you are not, that is helpful for us to know too.
I suggest one of three replies: Committed, Probable, Maybe.
I will, of course, keep you all posted as plans for the 2024 Big Bang SFB Blowout progress.
We hope to see all of you in 2024!
Thank you,
Dave Cheng

SFB warmup at Dave’s House - August 4-6
John Malis, long-time SFB player in the Northeast, is now an empty-nester, filled with enthusiasm to shake off some rust and get playing SFB again. John is helping us organize an SFB weekend as a warm-up to Council.
We will meet at my house in Albany NY (right next to Schenectady) for a weekend of SFB action. Arrive Friday, August 4th. Play some SFB August 5th and into the 6th. Maybe some other games too. It’ll be casual and fun.
I have several guest beds available, and for those wanting more comfort and privacy, there are several good hotels within a very reasonable distance.
Please send an email to SFB@swa-gaming.org if you would like to join us, and we will include you in the plans.
News on the 2024 SFB Big Bang Blowout is coming very soon. Watch this space for that within a few days.

Call for RSVPs - SFB at Dave’s house in Albany, August 5
Hello SFB Community!
We announced this back in May, but the date snuck up on me in the mean time. I’m overdue on some promotion.
We are TWO WEEKS away from SFB at Dave’s house in Albany, NY.
Saturday, August 5, 2023
Play SFB tournament battles all day.
Casual environment, plenty of table space, elbow room and comfort in my 600 sq ft game room.
Most of the action will be on Saturday.
We have beds for five guests if you need overnight accommodations.
If you want to arrive the afternoon or evening of Friday, Aug 4th, we can get a nice dinner and then hang out, maybe around the fire pit. Maybe a movie on the big screen. Maybe some light gaming. Whatever the group decides.
If you want to stay over and depart on Sunday, that’s cool too. I’ve got the whole weekend blocked off.
We have five or six players expected at this time. Room for plenty more. Please email me at SFB@swa-gaming.org if you want in!
Hope to see you in two weeks,

SFB at Council Gaming Con - Five Weeks and Counting
Hello SFB Community,
The world-renowned SFB Patrol tournament at the Council Gaming Convention starts exactly five weeks from today.
September 22-24, 2023
https://tabletop.events/conventions/council-2023/
Here are the current RSVP counts:
Committed: 10
Probable: 3
Maybe: 5
If you have not yet RSVPd, please either reply to this email or contact me directly at SFB@swa-gaming.org with your RSVP status.
If you are already on one of these lists, but your status is changing (like, say to bump yourself up to *Committed*), please let me know that too.
OTHER STAR FLEET UNIVERSE GAMES
Not only will we have the Patrol tournament, but Council is also offering some other SFU gaming action.
Mark Lurz, one of the main contributors to A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, will be running two ACTA:SF scenarios, with his beautifully-painted minis:
Friday afternoon Sept 22nd
https://tabletop.events/conventions/council-2023/schedule/11
Saturday morning Sept 23rd
https://tabletop.events/conventions/council-2023/schedule/12
Also, we are having a special, off-schedule Star Trek/Star Fleet game for those of you who don’t make it into the Patrol tournament finals, starting at 7pm on Saturday.
If you like SFU gaming, you’ll probably like Star Trek: Ascendancy, from Gale Force Nine Games. It’s my favorite 4X game, and I’ve played a lot of them. It has good mechanics and very good Star Trek feel, inspired mainly by the TNG and DS9 series.
And, we ~might~ have an extra-special treat. I am working on a SFU home-brew variant of ST:A for the SFU universe. Ferengi, Cardassians, Dominion, Breen - Out. Kzinti, Gorn, Lryans, Hydrans - In.
I am not sure if I will be able to have enough material ready by Council weekend. I’ve got a lot of ideas to work in. It might happen, it might not. And even if it happens, it will be an early playtest… It might be hot mess!
But, if you don’t make the Final Four, we will have seven seats available. Two are already claimed. Let me know if you’re interested, and I’ll put you on the list.
Please get back to me ASAP with your Committed/Probable/Maybe RSVP, and if you are interested in ST:A or SFU:A.

Hello Battlegroup Toronto,
I'm piggy-backing on Dave's message above but some Canadian players might not be aware of Battelgroup Toronto's trip to Schenectady.
As of this email, four Toronto players are going down to Schenectady to represent Battlegroup Toronto: Sam, Fred, Susan and Kosta.
If any Canadian players are interested in attending this event please let me know and we'll include you in our arrangements which include carpooling and room sharing.
All the best,
Sebastian
