So CL#44 is out.

With the seeming popularity of ACTASF and the general growth of the SFU into other game engines, maybe this product would have a much bigger market. It seems that Mongoose is doing so many 3D models of ships now that maybe a dea could be made to use them and have someone (XF) make them presentable for 2D.

I REALLY like the previous art style a lot but I'm guessing that didn't work out in the long run. (?)

I'm guessing the novel market is growing as well.

Xander, did you give it a shot?

[moving further comments from the "Suggestions for ADB Kickstarter projects" thread]

SVC: I sent the sample pages with the proposal email. You should already have them, unless something went wrong.

Rick: As Xander notes, most of those guys are top-of-the-field 3D artists. Even with Kickstarter money, I don't know if that would close a business-case.

Not to mention; artists at that level are going to want to do their own takes on things, which would make managing an *SFU* version of things a real swirlstorm to try and keep them reined-in.

Finding people who understand what the SFU is (and isn't), have the artist talent, and are willing to work for what the project can pay is a real challenge.

I can see Kickstarter funding color, glossy printing, etc., but I'd be pleasantly surprised if it could raise enough to pay a Hollywood-type 3D artist their going-wage for at least a couple of months, on top of printing-costs.

[Copied over from other thread: http://www.starfleetgames.com/discus/messages/12032/30368.html?1335390237, although using freelance artists has as much bearing in this topic as it does in the Kickstarter thread.]

Who says we need to use the "cream of the crop" to do these ship renders? I really doubt that Doug would have the time. He's a great guy and very friendly, but he has a lot of other things on his plate without a doubt. There are, however, those with adequate talent that have an interest in the SFU and ADB (and even those who don't, but would be willing to follow instruction set down by an art director, aka SVC) who would love to have the experience to do this and would put aside the time to create reasonably good art.

There are many 3D and 2D art forums that allow for "Call for Artist" postings. Some folks might respond. Some might not. Some might balk at payment being offered. Others may care more about the experience and being in print than copious amounts of cash.

Bottom line is this: ADB doesn't need "Hollywood-type 3D artists." They are too busy and most likely have bigger items to occupy them. ADB does need capable artists to work at a level of quality and polish that users of Kickstarter have come to expect. There are tons of near-pro level illustrators that aren't "pro" yet because of this or that, but have skills nearing "the pros". We all know that a quick Google search for "Star Trek Ship, Star Trek Model, Star Trek Ortho" will return copious amounts of hits. Put out feelers, send out invites. See who bites.

It's the job of the art director to give a detailed description of the subject(s) to be portrayed, relevant materials that can be used for reference, and the final yes or no. If proper steps are taken there shouldn't be much of a "real swirlstorm." And if there is, the artist gets his or her kill fee and a "thank you, but you're not the right fit."

Can some F&E data/info and counter graphics of the unit featured be considered part of this project?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - 11:34 pm: Edit

Yes, and it should.

By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - 11:45 pm: Edit

How about the Tac Intell stuff like in Module P6?

So the book would have the SFB and F&E abbreviations?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Thursday, April 26, 2012 - 01:02 am: Edit

sure

Just wondering out loud. The ship art for the Federation Master Starship Book is going to have top views of all the Federation Starships. Could those top views be the basis for this book? How hard would it be to make some side and bottom views? If you know how much time it took to create the art for FMSSB would you then know how much time you could guess to do the other views and art for this book? I mean if you reused the art for the FMSSB is this book 1/4 done?

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 - 01:21 am: Edit

Not workable.

People want more than my poor efforts. It would take me years to do the other 3/4 of the work.
