FC: Proposals and new ideas

Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Federation Commander: FC: Proposals and new ideas
  Subtopic Posts   Updated

Somehow this got lost in one of the BBS crashes or trimmings years ago, but it was posted when FC began.

We want FC to be a single unified game system with few optional rules and no alternative or house rules. Therefore, new rules aren't needed or considered and cannot be posted.

As for ships, it's easier for us to convert an SFB ship in-house so we don't need submissions of such conversions (although you are welcome to suggest which SFB ships you want converted). Entirely new ships should go to Steve Petrick to consider for SFB. It is VERY rare for a new ship to first appear in other systems than SFB.

New scenarios we want. It is easier for us to convert SFB scenarios in house. (Feel free to request the one you want converted.)

Regarding the Reference Scenario Book that has been discussed, is the plan to include all FC scenarios from all the FC Attack products, Briefings, and Captain's Logs? Just curious if it will include more than just the Attack product scenarios (I'm hoping for at least all the scenarios from Briefing #1 as well). Looking forward to this product (especially if it is available via e23). Thanks,

Garrett

I don't know yet. So far, the book is about six pages long. When I get all of the attack products included, I'll see if I want to make the CapLog and Communique scenarios part of that book or another book.

Please don't forget about the FC scenarios in "For the Glory of the Empire."

I think those all came from somewhere else, and will get scooped up in their original locations.

Any chance of a style update for the FC scenarios? It's a pretty little thing, but I always liked the graphic block at the start of SFB scenarios...especially in something like a scenario book, it makes it easy when flipping through the pages to find a scenario you are interested in playing.

I mean, even aside from the obvious 'looking for a specific scenario' thing - it's much quicker to recognize a picture than read and parse the scenario title. The graphics also get you a quick overview of what the scenario is about. Someone looking for a simple Klingon vs Hydran, small-squadron scenario, can very rapidly flip through the scenarios in SFB to find a potentially interesting one by graphic, alone.

While it's obviously important for FedCom to have a style difference from SFB...some graphic block at the top of each scenario *would* be welcome. Suggestion: maybe just the empire symbols for the forces present, and a symbol for approximate scenario complexity? (IE., Federation symbol, Klingon symbol, 3 stars = a moderate squadron-scale action between Feds and Klinks. Lyran symbol, Kzinti symbol, 1 star = a small ship vs ship action between the two feline empires. Romulan symbol, Gorn symbol, 5 stars = epic fleet assault between our two favorite plasma races, potentially to include starbase and/or planetary assaults)

The goal being really just to have that ability to quickly glance at the graphic and get a vibe for the scenario, to help when deciding what to play (or, at least, read more of the text to determine if it's really that interesting.

I have no plans to add such pictures. They're a pain in the wazoo to create and use, nobody is going to convince me we're going to sell one single extra copy if I do all of that work, and if they're "required" for the project then the project is cancelled.

I think a "symbol for scenario complexity" is going to be too complex for FC players.

Now, Xander, if you want to do the graphic blocks for free, we can talk about it, later, maybe after Origins.

I suppose I was thinking something along the lines of what Avalon Hill used to put on their boxes. Heck, maybe even a 4-tier system. Just to indicate a scale from 'This scenario can be played over lunch' to 'ZOMG! CLEAR THE WEEKEND!'

So noted - I think it's enough worth doing to be willing to put the time in. And, hey, I should be cleared up with a few current projects by that time...

Does not matter. I made it clear a decade ago that FC was never going to have and was not soliciting or welcoming to alternative rules. Did it not seem strange that there has never been one?

Really, the only input ever requested or used for FC was scenarios. I insisted on doing all ship conversions. Mike West has worked his way up the chain for 15 years to get to the point where I considered a suggestion he made. (Emphasis on WORK in that he has checked every ship card and scenario and rule and run the forum.)

The point is to keep FC simple and pure. There will be one and only one way to do things (other than some "while you test drive it" rules in First Missions). I do not want to divide the player base into those who prefer one rule and those who prefer the other. (Long ago, SFB lost hundreds of players who just would not give up plotted movement.)

I tried to be gentle and show good humor because we're such good friends (I am not being sarcastic), but really, I didn't ask for alternative rules input, nor have I ever given any indication that such things were wanted or welcome.

I was just noticing that none of the seltorian ship cards are available in a pdf format, at least not that I could find. I know they might not be as popular as some other factions. You can get tholian ship card packs on their own without having to get "tholian's attack" so it might be nice to be able to get seltorians too.
